1 N ow there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

Había en Cesarea un hombre llamado Cornelio, centurión de la compañía llamada «la Italiana»,

2 a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

piadoso y temeroso de Dios con toda su casa, y que hacía muchas limosnas al pueblo y oraba siempre a Dios.

3 H e saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius.

Éste vio claramente en una visión, como a la hora novena del día, que un ángel de Dios entraba donde él estaba y le decía: —¡Cornelio!

4 A nd he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God.

Él, mirándolo fijamente, y atemorizado, dijo: —¿Qué es, Señor? Le dijo: —Tus oraciones y tus limosnas han subido para memoria delante de Dios.

5 A nd now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter:

Envía, pues, ahora hombres a Jope y haz venir a Simón, el que tiene por sobrenombre Pedro.

6 h e lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side.

Éste se hospeda en casa de cierto Simón, un curtidor que tiene su casa junto al mar; él te dirá lo que es necesario que hagas.

7 A nd when the angel that spake unto him was departed, he called two of his household-servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

Cuando se marchó el ángel que hablaba con Cornelio, éste llamó a dos de sus criados y a un devoto soldado de los que lo asistían,

8 a nd having rehearsed all things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

a los cuales envió a Jope, después de habérselo contado todo.

9 N ow on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour:

Al día siguiente, mientras ellos iban por el camino y se acercaban a la ciudad, Pedro subió a la azotea para orar, cerca de la hora sexta.

10 a nd he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance;

Sintió mucha hambre y quiso comer; pero mientras le preparaban algo le sobrevino un éxtasis:

11 a nd he beholdeth the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth:

Vio el cielo abierto, y que descendía algo semejante a un gran lienzo, que atado de las cuatro puntas era bajado a la tierra,

12 w herein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven.

en el cual había de todos los cuadrúpedos terrestres, reptiles y aves del cielo.

13 A nd there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.

Y le vino una voz: —Levántate, Pedro, mata y come.

14 B ut Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean.

Entonces Pedro dijo: —Señor, no; porque ninguna cosa común o impura he comido jamás.

15 A nd a voice came unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.

Volvió la voz a él la segunda vez: —Lo que Dios limpió, no lo llames tú común.

16 A nd this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven.

Esto ocurrió tres veces; y aquel lienzo volvió a ser recogido en el cielo.

17 N ow while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate,

Mientras Pedro estaba perplejo dentro de sí sobre lo que significaría la visión que había visto, los hombres que habían sido enviados por Cornelio, habiendo preguntado por la casa de Simón, llegaron a la puerta.

18 a nd called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there.

Llamaron y preguntaron si allí se hospedaba un tal Simón que tenía por sobrenombre Pedro.

19 A nd while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

Y mientras Pedro pensaba en la visión, le dijo el Espíritu: «Tres hombres te buscan.

20 B ut arise, and get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them.

Levántate, pues, desciende y no dudes de ir con ellos, porque yo los he enviado».

21 A nd Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

Entonces Pedro, descendiendo a donde estaban los hombres que fueron enviados por Cornelio, les dijo: —Yo soy el que buscáis. ¿Cuál es la causa de vuestra venida?

22 A nd they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned of God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee.

Ellos dijeron: —Cornelio el centurión, varón justo y temeroso de Dios, y que tiene buen testimonio en toda la nación de los judíos, ha recibido instrucciones de un santo ángel, de hacerte venir a su casa para oír tus palabras.

23 S o he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

Entonces, haciéndolos entrar, los hospedó. Y al día siguiente, levantándose, se fue con ellos; y lo acompañaron algunos de los hermanos de Jope.

24 A nd on the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends.

Al otro día entraron en Cesarea. Cornelio los estaba esperando, habiendo convocado a sus parientes y amigos más íntimos.

25 A nd when it came to pass that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

Cuando Pedro entró, salió Cornelio a recibirlo y, postrándose a sus pies, lo adoró.

26 B ut Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Pero Pedro lo levantó, diciendo: —Levántate, pues yo mismo también soy un hombre.

27 A nd as he talked with him, he went in, and findeth many come together:

Hablando con él, entró y halló a muchos que se habían reunido.

28 a nd he said unto them, Ye yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come unto one of another nation; and yet unto me hath God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean:

Y les dijo: —Vosotros sabéis cuán abominable es para un judío juntarse o acercarse a un extranjero, pero a mí me ha mostrado Dios que a nadie llame común o impuro.

29 w herefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me.

Por eso, al ser llamado, vine sin replicar. Así que pregunto: ¿Por qué causa me habéis hecho venir?

30 A nd Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel,

Entonces Cornelio dijo: —Hace cuatro días que a esta hora yo estaba en ayunas; y a la hora novena, mientras oraba en mi casa, vi que se puso delante de mí un varón con vestido resplandeciente,

31 a nd saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

y me dijo: “Cornelio, tu oración ha sido oída, y tus limosnas han sido recordadas delante de Dios.

32 S end therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side.

Envía, pues, a Jope y haz venir a Simón, el que tiene por sobrenombre Pedro, el cual se hospeda en casa de Simón, un curtidor, junto al mar; cuando llegue, él te hablará.”

33 F orthwith therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee of the Lord.

Así que luego envié por ti, y tú has hecho bien en venir. Ahora, pues, todos nosotros estamos aquí en la presencia de Dios, para oír todo lo que Dios te ha mandado. Discurso de Pedro en casa de Cornelio

34 A nd Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Entonces Pedro, abriendo la boca, dijo: —En verdad comprendo que Dios no hace acepción de personas,

35 b ut in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him.

sino que en toda nación se agrada del que lo teme y hace justicia.

36 T he word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all.) --

Dios envió mensaje a los hijos de Israel, anunciando el evangelio de la paz por medio de Jesucristo; éste es Señor de todos.

37 t hat saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

Vosotros sabéis lo que se divulgó por toda Judea, comenzando desde Galilea, después del bautismo que predicó Juan:

38 e ven Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

cómo Dios ungió con el Espíritu Santo y con poder a Jesús de Nazaret, y cómo éste anduvo haciendo bienes y sanando a todos los oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él.

39 A nd we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree.

Nosotros somos testigos de todas las cosas que Jesús, a quien mataron colgándolo en un madero, hizo en la tierra de Judea y en Jerusalén.

40 H im God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest,

A éste levantó Dios al tercer día e hizo que apareciera,

41 n ot to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

no a todo el pueblo, sino a los testigos que Dios había ordenado de antemano, a nosotros que comimos y bebimos con él después que resucitó de los muertos.

42 A nd he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.

Y nos mandó que predicáramos al pueblo y testificáramos que él es el que Dios ha puesto por Juez de vivos y muertos.

43 T o him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins.

De éste dan testimonio todos los profetas, que todos los que en él crean recibirán perdón de pecados por su nombre. Los gentiles reciben el Espíritu Santo

44 W hile Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.

Mientras aún hablaba Pedro estas palabras, el Espíritu Santo cayó sobre todos los que oían el discurso.

45 A nd they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Y los fieles de la circuncisión que habían venido con Pedro se quedaron atónitos de que también sobre los gentiles se derramara el don del Espíritu Santo,

46 F or they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

porque los oían que hablaban en lenguas y que glorificaban a Dios.

47 C an any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?

Entonces respondió Pedro: —¿Puede acaso alguno impedir el agua, para que no sean bautizados estos que han recibido el Espíritu Santo lo mismo que nosotros?

48 A nd he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Y mandó bautizarlos en el nombre del Señor Jesús. Entonces le rogaron que se quedara por algunos días.
