1 S urely there is a mine for silver, And a place for gold which they refine.

2 I ron is taken out of the earth, And copper is molten out of the stone.

El hierro se saca del polvo y de la piedra se funde el cobre.

3 M an setteth an end to darkness, And searcheth out, to the furthest bound, The stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.

Los hombres ponen término a las tinieblas, lo examinan todo perfectamente, hasta las piedras que hay en oscuridad y en sombra de muerte.

4 H e breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn; They are forgotten of the foot; They hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.

Abren minas lejos de lo habitado, en lugares olvidados donde nadie pone el pie. Allí están suspendidos, balanceándose lejos de los demás hombres.

5 A s for the earth, out of it cometh bread; And underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.

De la tierra proviene el pan, pero en su interior está como convertida en fuego,

6 T he stones thereof are the place of sapphires, And it hath dust of gold.

y en ella hay lugar donde las piedras son zafiro y el polvo es de oro.

7 T hat path no bird of prey knoweth, Neither hath the falcon's eye seen it:

Es una senda que nunca la conoció ave ni ojo de buitre la vio;

8 T he proud beasts have not trodden it, Nor hath the fierce lion passed thereby.

que nunca la pisaron animales fieros ni león pasó por ella.

9 H e putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock; He overturneth the mountains by the roots.

El hombre pone su mano en el pedernal y trastorna de raíz los montes.

10 H e cutteth out channels among the rocks; And his eye seeth every precious thing.

En los peñascos abre corrientes de aguas, y sus ojos ven todo lo preciado.

11 H e bindeth the streams that they trickle not; And the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light.

Detiene los ríos en su nacimiento y saca a la luz lo escondido.

12 B ut where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

»Mas, ¿dónde se halla la sabiduría? ¿Dónde se encuentra el lugar de la inteligencia?

13 M an knoweth not the price thereof; Neither is it found in the land of the living.

No conoce su valor el hombre, ni se halla en la tierra de los seres vivientes.

14 T he deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.

El abismo dice: “No está en mí”, y dice el mar: “Tampoco está conmigo.”

15 I t cannot be gotten for gold, Neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.

No se dará a cambio de oro ni su precio será a peso de plata.

16 I t cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

No puede ser pagada con oro de Ofir, con ónice precioso ni con zafiro.

17 G old and glass cannot equal it, Neither shall it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.

No se le pueden comparar el oro ni el diamante, ni se la cambiará por alhajas de oro fino.

18 N o mention shall be made of coral or of crystal: Yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies.

¿Y qué decir del coral o de las perlas? ¡La sabiduría vale más que las piedras preciosas!

19 T he topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, Neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

No se iguala con ella el topacio de Etiopía, ni puede pagarse con oro fino.

20 W hence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?

»¿De dónde, pues, procede la sabiduría y dónde se encuentra el lugar de la inteligencia?

21 S eeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the birds of the heavens.

¡Encubierta está a los ojos de todo viviente, y a toda ave del cielo le es oculta!

22 D estruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor thereof with our ears.

El Abadón y la muerte dicen: “Su fama ha llegado hasta nuestros oídos.”

23 G od understandeth the way thereof, And he knoweth the place thereof.

»Dios es quien conoce el camino de ella y sabe dónde está su lugar,

24 F or he looketh to the ends of the earth, And seeth under the whole heaven;

porque él observa hasta los confines de la tierra y ve cuanto hay bajo los cielos.

25 T o make a weight for the wind: Yea, he meteth out the waters by measure.

Al darle peso al viento y fijar la medida de las aguas;

26 W hen he made a decree for the rain, And a way for the lightning of the thunder;

al darle ley a la lluvia y camino al relámpago de los truenos,

27 T hen did he see it, and declare it; He established it, yea, and searched it out.

ya entonces la vio él y la puso de manifiesto, la preparó y también la escudriñó.

28 A nd unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.

Y dijo al hombre: “El temor del Señor es la sabiduría, y el apartarse del mal, la inteligencia.”»
