An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

5 Х то сміється з убогого, той ображає свого Творця, хто радіє з нещастя, не буде такий без вини.

Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; And he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

6 К орона для старших онуки, а пишнота дітей їхні батьки.

Children's children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.

7 Н е пристойна безумному мова поважна, а тим більше шляхетному мова брехлива.

Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.

8 Х абар в очах його власника самоцвіт: до всього, до чого повернеться, буде щастити йому.

A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

9 Х то шукає любови провину ховає, хто ж про неї повторює, розгонює друзів.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.

10 Н а розумного більше впливає одне остереження, як на глупака сто ударів.

A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.

11 З лий шукає лише неслухняности, та вісник жорстокий на нього пошлеться.

An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

12 Л іпше спіткати обездітнену ведмедицю, що кидається на людину, аніж нерозумного в глупоті його.

Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.

13 Х то відплачує злом за добро, не відступить лихе з його дому.

Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.

14 П очин сварки то прорив води, тому перед вибухом сварки покинь ти її!

The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

15 Х то оправдує несправедливого, і хто засуджує праведного, обидва вони Господеві огидні.

He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

16 Н ащо ті гроші в руці нерозумного, щоб мудрість купити, як мозку нема?

Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?

17 П равдивий друг любить за всякого часу, в недолі ж він робиться братом.

A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.

18 Л юдина, позбавлена розуму, ручиться, поруку дає за друга свого.

A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.

19 Х то сварку кохає, той любить гріх; хто ж підвищує уста свої, той шукає нещастя.

He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.

20 Л юдина лукавого серця не знайде добра, хто ж лукавить своїм язиком, упаде в зло.

He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

21 Х то родить безумного, родить на смуток собі, і не потішиться батько безглуздого.

He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.

22 С ерце радісне добре лікує, а пригноблений дух сушить кості.

A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.

23 Б езбожний таємно бере хабара, щоб зігнути путі правосуддя.

A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.

24 З обличчям розумного мудрість, а очі глупця аж на кінці землі.

Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

25 Н ерозумний син смуток для батька, для своєї ж родительки гіркість.

A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.

26 Н е добре карати справедливого, бити шляхетних за щирість!

Also to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness.

27 Х то слова свої стримує, той знає пізнання, і холоднокровний розумна людина.

He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

28 І глупак, як мовчить, уважається мудрим, а як уста свої закриває розумним.

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is esteemed as prudent.
