1 А Йов відповів та й сказав:

Then Job answered and said,

2 С правді, то ж ви тільки люди, і мудрість із вами помре!...

No doubt but ye are the people, And wisdom shall die with you.

3 Т аж і я маю розум, як ви, я не нижчий від вас! І в кого немає такого, як це?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: Yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

4 П осміховищем став я для друга свого, я, що кликав до Бога, і Він мені відповідав, посміховищем став справедливий, невинний...

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

5 Н ещасливцю погорда, на думку спокійного, приготовлена для спотикання ноги!

In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

6 С покійні намети грабіжників, і безпечність у тих, хто Бога гнівить, у того, хто ніби то Бога провадить рукою своєю.

The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

7 А ле запитай хоч худобу і навчить тебе, і птаство небесне й тобі розповість.

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

8 А бо говори до землі й вона вивчить тебе, і розкажуть тобі риби морські.

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 Х то б із цього всього не пізнав, що Господня рука це вчинила?

Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

10 Щ о в Нього в руці душа всього живого й дух кожного людського тіла?

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?

11 Ч и ж не ухо слова розбирає, піднебіння ж смакує для себе поживу?

Doth not the ear try words, Even as the palate tasteth its food?

12 М удрість у старших, бо довгість днів розум.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.

13 М удрість та сила у Нього, Його рада та розум.

With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

14 О сь Він зруйнує й не буде воно відбудоване, замкне чоловіка й не буде він випущений.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

15 О сь Він стримає води і висохнуть, Він їх пустить то землю вони перевернуть.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 В Нього сила та задум, у Нього заблуджений і той, хто призводить до блуду.

With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 В ін уводить у помилку радників, і обезумлює суддів,

He leadeth counsellors away stripped, And judges maketh he fools.

18 В ін розв'язує пута царів і приперізує пояса на їхні стегна.

He looseth the bond of kings, And he bindeth their loins with a girdle.

19 В ін провадить священиків босо, і потужних повалює,

He leadeth priests away stripped, And overthroweth the mighty.

20 В ін надійним уста відіймає й забирає від старших розумність.

He removeth the speech of the trusty, And taketh away the understanding of the elders.

21 Н а достойників ллє Він погорду, а пояса можним ослаблює.

He poureth contempt upon princes, And looseth the belt of the strong.

22 В ідкриває Він речі глибокі із темряви, а темне провадить на світло.

He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, And bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

23 В ін робить народи потужними й знову їх нищить, Він народи поширює, й потім виводить в неволю.

He increaseth the nations, and he destroyeth them: He enlargeth the nations, and he leadeth them captive.

24 В ідіймає Він розум в народніх голів на землі та блукати їх змушує по бездорожній пустелі,

He taketh away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 в они ходять навпомацки в темряві темній, і Він упроваджує їх в блуканину, мов п'яного!

They grope in the dark without light; And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
