1 Y respondió Job, y dijo:

Then Job answered and said,

2 C iertamente que vosotros sois el pueblo; y con vosotros morirá la sabiduría.

No doubt but ye are the people, And wisdom shall die with you.

3 T ambién tengo corazón como vosotros; no soy yo menos que vosotros; ¿y quién habrá que no pueda decir otro tanto?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: Yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

4 E l que invoca a Dios, y él le responde, es burlado de su amigo; y el justo y perfecto es escarnecido.

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

5 L a antorcha es tenida en poco en el pensamiento del próspero; la cual se aparejó contra las caídas de los pies.

In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

6 L as tiendas de los ladrones están en paz; y los que provocan a Dios, y los que traen dioses en sus manos viven seguros.

The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

7 Y en efecto, pregunta ahora a las bestias, que ellas te enseñarán; y a las aves de los cielos, que ellas te lo mostrarán;

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

8 o habla a la tierra, que ella te enseñará; los peces del mar te lo declararán también.

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 ¿ Qué cosa de todas éstas no entiende que la mano del SEÑOR la hizo?

Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

10 E n su mano está el alma de todo viviente, y el espíritu de toda carne humana.

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?

11 C iertamente el oído prueba las palabras, y el paladar gusta las viandas.

Doth not the ear try words, Even as the palate tasteth its food?

12 E n el antiguo está la sabiduría, y en la larga edad la inteligencia.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.

13 C on él está la sabiduría y la fortaleza; suyo es el consejo y la inteligencia.

With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

14 H e aquí, él derribará, y no será edificado; encerrará al hombre, y no habrá quien le abra.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

15 H e aquí, él detendrá las aguas, y se secarán; él las enviará, y destruirán la tierra.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 C on él está la fortaleza y la existencia; suyo es el que yerra, y el que hace errar.

With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 E l hace andar a los consejeros desnudos de consejo, y hace enloquecer a los jueces.

He leadeth counsellors away stripped, And judges maketh he fools.

18 E l suelta la atadura de los reyes, y les ata el cinto a sus lomos.

He looseth the bond of kings, And he bindeth their loins with a girdle.

19 E l lleva despojados a los sacerdotes, y trastorna a los valientes.

He leadeth priests away stripped, And overthroweth the mighty.

20 E l impide el labio a los que dicen verdad, y quita a los ancianos el consejo.

He removeth the speech of the trusty, And taketh away the understanding of the elders.

21 E l derrama menosprecio sobre los príncipes, y debilita la fuerza de los esforzados.

He poureth contempt upon princes, And looseth the belt of the strong.

22 E l descubre las profundidades de las tinieblas, y saca a luz la sombra de muerte.

He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, And bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

23 E l multiplica los gentiles, y él las destruye; esparce los gentiles, y las torna a recoger.

He increaseth the nations, and he destroyeth them: He enlargeth the nations, and he leadeth them captive.

24 E l quita el corazón de las cabezas del pueblo de la tierra, y les hace que se pierdan vagando sin camino;

He taketh away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 q ue palpen las tinieblas, y no la luz; y los hace errar como borrachos.

They grope in the dark without light; And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
