1 ¶ Y dijo el SEÑOR a Samuel: ¿Hasta cuándo has tú de llorar a Saúl, habiéndolo yo desechado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite, y ven, te enviaré a Jessé de Belén; porque de sus hijos me he provisto de rey.

And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 Y dijo Samuel: ¿Cómo iré? Si Saúl lo entendiere, me matará. El SEÑOR respondió: Toma contigo una becerra, y di: A sacrificar al SEÑOR he venido.

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

3 Y llama a Jessé al sacrificio, y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; y me ungirás al que yo te dijere.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 Y Samuel hizo como le dijo el SEÑOR; y cuando él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad le salieron a recibir con miedo, y dijeron: ¿Es pacífica tu venida?

And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 Y él respondió: Sí, vengo a sacrificar al SEÑOR; santificaos, y venid conmigo al sacrificio. Y santificando él a Jessé y a sus hijos, los llamó al sacrificio.

And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 ¶ Y aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, él vio a Eliab, y se dijo: ¿Por ventura está delante del SEÑOR su ungido?

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

7 Y el SEÑOR respondió a Samuel: No mires a su parecer, ni a la altura de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque no es lo que el hombre ve. Porque el hombre ve lo que está delante de sus ojos, mas el SEÑOR ve el corazón.

But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

8 E ntonces llamó Jessé a Abinadab, y le hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: Ni a éste ha elegido el SEÑOR.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

9 H izo luego pasar Jessé a Sama. Y él dijo: Tampoco a éste ha elegido el SEÑOR.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

10 E hizo pasar Jessé a sus siete hijos delante de Samuel; mas Samuel dijo a Jessé: el SEÑOR no ha elegido a éstos.

And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these.

11 E ntonces dijo Samuel a Jessé: ¿Se han acabado los jóvenes? Y él respondió: Aún queda el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Jessé: Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 E nvió, pues, por él, y lo hizo entrar; el cual era rojo, (de buen color), de hermoso parecer y de bello aspecto. Entonces el SEÑOR dijo: Levántate y úngelo, que éste es.

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

13 Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y lo ungió de entre sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu del SEÑOR prosperó a David. Y levantándose Samuel, se volvió a Ramá.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 ¶ Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR se apartó de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte del SEÑOR.

Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: He aquí ahora, que un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 D iga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen alguno que sepa tocar el arpa; para que cuando fuere sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él taña con su mano, y tengas alivio.

Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 Y Saúl respondió a sus criados: Buscadme, pues, ahora alguno que taña bien, y traédmelo.

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 E ntonces uno de los criados respondió, diciendo: He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Jessé de Belén, que sabe tocar, y es valiente y vigoroso, y hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, y hermoso, y el SEÑOR está con él.

Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him.

19 Y Saúl envió mensajeros a Jessé, diciendo: Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.

Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 Y tomó Jessé un asno cargado de pan, y un cántaro de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por mano de David su hijo.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 Y viniendo David a Saúl, estuvo delante de él; y él lo amó mucho, y fue hecho su paje de armas.

And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer.

22 Y Saúl envió a decir a Jessé: Yo te ruego que esté David conmigo; porque ha hallado gracia en mis ojos.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.

23 Y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios era sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa, y tañía con su mano; y Saúl tenía refrigerio, y estaba mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
