1 D ijo Jehová a Samuel: ¿Hasta cuándo llorarás a Saúl, habiéndolo yo desechado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite, y ven, te enviaré a Isay de Belén, porque de entre sus hijos me he provisto de rey.

And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 Y dijo Samuel: ¿Cómo voy a ir? Si se entera Saúl, me matará. Jehová respondió: Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido.

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

3 Y llama a Isay al sacrificio, y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; y me ungirás al que yo te diga.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 H izo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová; y luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirle con miedo, y dijeron: ¿Es pacífica tu venida?

And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 É l respondió: Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos, y venid conmigo al sacrificio. Y santificando él a Isay y a sus hijos, los invitó al sacrificio.

And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 Y aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, él vio a Eliab, y dijo: De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido.

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

7 Y Jehová respondió a Samuel: No mires a su aspecto, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre; pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón.

But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

8 E ntonces llamó Isay a Abinadab, y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: Tampoco a éste ha escogido Jehová.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

9 H izo luego pasar Isay a Samá. Y él dijo: Tampoco a éste ha elegido Jehová.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

10 E hizo pasar Isay siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isay: Jehová no ha elegido a éstos.

And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these.

11 E ntonces dijo Samuel a Isay: ¿Son éstos todos tus hijos? Y él respondió: Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Isay: Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 E nvió, pues, por él, y le hizo entrar; y era rubio, hermoso de ojos, y de buena presencia. Entonces Jehová dijo: Levántate y úngelo, porque éste es.

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

13 Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre David. Se levantó luego Samuel, y se volvió a Ramá. David toca para Saúl

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 E l Espíritu de Jehová se había apartado de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová.

Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: He aquí ahora, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 D iga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él taña con su mano, y tengas alivio.

Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 Y Saúl respondió a sus criados: Buscadme, pues, ahora alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo.

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 E ntonces uno de los criados respondió diciendo: He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Isay de Belén, que sabe tocar, y es valiente y vigoroso y hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, y hermoso, y Jehová está con él.

Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him.

19 Y Saúl envió mensajeros a Isay, diciendo: Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.

Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 Y tomó Isay un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David su hijo.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 Y viniendo David a Saúl, se quedó a su servicio; Saúl le cobró mucho afecto, y le hizo paje de armas.

And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer.

22 Y Saúl envió a decir a Isay: Yo te ruego que esté David conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia en mis ojos.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.

23 Y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y tocaba con su mano; y Saúl tenía alivio y estaba mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
