Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2 d urante el sumo sacerdocio de Anás y de Caifás, vino palabra de Dios sobre Juan el hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.

in the highpriesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3 Y recorrió toda la comarca del Jordán, proclamando un bautismo de arrepentimiento para perdón de pecados;

And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins;

4 c omo está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías: Voz de uno que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor; Haced derechas sus sendas;

as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

5 T odo valle será rellenado, Y todo monte y collado será rebajado; Lo tortuoso se hará recto, Y lo áspero se convertirá en caminos suaves;

Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth;

6 Y verá toda carne la salvación de Dios.

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 D ecía, pues, a las multitudes que salían para ser bautizadas por él: Engendros de víboras, ¿quién os advirtió que huyeseis de la ira inminente?

He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 P roducid, pues, frutos que correspondan a un sincero arrepentimiento; y no comencéis a decir entre vosotros mismos: Tenemos por padre a Abraham; porque os digo que de estas piedras puede Dios suscitar hijos a Abraham.

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 Y ya también el hacha está puesta junto a la raíz de los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no produce buen fruto se corta y se echa al fuego.

And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 Y las multitudes le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Qué, pues, haremos?

And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do?

11 Y respondiendo, les decía: El que tenga dos túnicas, que las reparta con el que no tiene; y el que tenga qué comer, que haga lo mismo.

And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise.

12 V inieron también cobradores de impuestos a ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos?

And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do?

13 É l les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que se os ha ordenado.

And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you.

14 T ambién unos soldados le preguntaban, diciendo: Y nosotros ¿qué haremos? Y les dijo: No intimidéis a nadie, ni denunciéis en falso para sacar dinero, y contentaos con vuestra paga.

And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse any one wrongfully; and be content with your wages.

15 Y como el pueblo estaba a la espera, y todos andaban pensando en su corazón acerca de Juan, si quizás él sería el Cristo,

And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ;

16 J uan respondió y les dijo a todos: Yo os bautizo con agua; pero está viniendo el que es más fuerte que yo, al que yo no soy apto para desatarle la correa de sus sandalias; él os bautizará con Espíritu Santo y fuego.

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:

17 Y a tiene en la mano el aventador, y limpiará con esmero su era, y recogerá el trigo en su granero; pero la paja la quemará con fuego inextinguible.

whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

18 Y así, con muchas y variadas exhortaciones, anunciaba al pueblo la Buena Nueva.

With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people;

19 P ero cuando censuró repetidamente a Herodes el tetrarca respecto de Herodías, la mujer de su hermano, y en relación con todas las maldades que Herodes había hecho,

but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

20 a todas ellas añadió Herodes también esto: que encerró a Juan en la cárcel. El bautismo de Jesucristo

added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 A conteció que, cuando todo el pueblo era bautizado, también Jesús fue bautizado; y mientras oraba, se abrió el cielo,

Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 y descendió sobre él el Espíritu Santo en forma corporal, como una paloma; y salió del cielo una voz que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti he puesto mi complacencia. Genealogía de Jesucristo

and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

23 Y Jesús mismo, al comenzar, tenía unos treinta años, siendo hijo, según se suponía, de José, el hijo de Elí,

And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
