1 R espondió entonces Job, diciendo:

Then Job answered and said,

2 C iertamente vosotros sois la gente importante, Y con vosotros morirá la sabiduría.

No doubt but ye are the people, And wisdom shall die with you.

3 P ero también yo tengo entendimiento como vosotros; No soy yo menos que vosotros; ¿Y a quién se le ocultan estas cosas?

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: Yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

4 Y o soy uno de quien su amigo se mofa, Que invoca a Dios, y él le responde; Con todo, el justo y perfecto es escarnecido.

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

5 A quel cuyos pies van a resbalar Es como una lámpara despreciada por aquel que está a sus anchas.

In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; It is ready for them whose foot slippeth.

6 P rosperan las tiendas de los ladrones, Y los que provocan a Dios viven seguros, Pensando que lo tienen en su puño.

The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.

7 P ero pregunta ahora a las bestias, y ellas te enseñarán; A las aves de los cielos, y ellas te informarán.

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee:

8 O habla a la tierra, y ella te enseñará; Los peces del mar te lo declararán también.

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

9 ¿ Qué cosa de todas éstas no entiende Que la mano de Jehová la hizo?

Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

10 E n su mano está el alma de todo viviente, Y el hálito de todo el género humano.

In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?

11 C iertamente el oído distingue las palabras, Y el paladar gusta las viandas.

Doth not the ear try words, Even as the palate tasteth its food?

12 E n los ancianos está la sabiduría, Y en la larga edad la inteligencia.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.

13 C on Dios está la sabiduría y el poder; Suyo es el consejo y la inteligencia.

With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

14 S i él derriba, no hay quien edifique; Encerrará al hombre, y no habrá quien le abra.

Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

15 S i él detiene las aguas, todo se seca; Si las suelta, destruyen la tierra.

Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.

16 C on él está la fuerza y la pericia; Suyo es el que yerra, y el que hace errar.

With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.

17 É l hace andar despojados de consejo a los consejeros, Y entontece a los jueces.

He leadeth counsellors away stripped, And judges maketh he fools.

18 É l rompe las cadenas de los tiranos, Y les ata una soga a sus lomos.

He looseth the bond of kings, And he bindeth their loins with a girdle.

19 É l lleva despojados a los príncipes, Y abate a los poderosos.

He leadeth priests away stripped, And overthroweth the mighty.

20 P riva del habla a los consejeros. Y quita a los ancianos la discreción.

He removeth the speech of the trusty, And taketh away the understanding of the elders.

21 É l derrama menosprecio sobre los príncipes, Y desata el cinto de los fuertes.

He poureth contempt upon princes, And looseth the belt of the strong.

22 É l descubre las profundidades de las tinieblas. Y saca a luz la más densa oscuridad.

He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, And bringeth out to light the shadow of death.

23 É l engrandece a las naciones, y él las destruye; Desparrama a las naciones, y las vuelve a recoger.

He increaseth the nations, and he destroyeth them: He enlargeth the nations, and he leadeth them captive.

24 É l quita el entendimiento a los jefes del pueblo de la tierra, Y los hace vagar como por un yermo sin camino.

He taketh away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

25 V an a tientas, como en tinieblas y sin luz, Y los hace tambalearse como borrachos.

They grope in the dark without light; And he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.
