1 D omnul a zis lui Samuel:,, Cînd vei înceta să plîngi pe Saul, pentru că l-am lepădat, ca să nu mai domnească peste Israel? Umple-ţi... cornul cu untdelemn, şi du-te; te voi trimite la Isai, Betleemitul, căci pe unul din fiii lui Mi l-am ales...... ca împărat.``

And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 S amuel a zis:,, Cum să mă duc? Saul are să afle, şi mă va ucide.`` Şi Domnul a zis:,, Să iei cu tine un viţel, şi să zici:, Vin să aduc o jertfă Domnului.`

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.

3 S ă pofteşti pe Isai la jertfă; Eu îţi voi arăta ce trebuie să faci, şi Îmi vei unge pe acela pe care-ţi voi spune să -l ungi.``

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 S amuel a făcut ce zisese Domnul, şi s'a dus la Betleem. Bătrînii cetăţii au alergat înspăimîntaţi înaintea lui şi au zis:,, Ce vesteşte venirea ta: ceva bun?``

And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 E l a răspuns:,, Da; vin să aduc o jertfă Domnului. Sfinţiţi-vă, şi veniţi cu mine la jertfă.`` A sfinţit şi pe Isai cu fiii lui, şi i -a pofitit la jertfă.

And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 C înd au intrat ei, Samuel, văzînd pe Eliab, şi -a zis:,, Negreşit, unsul Domnului este aici înaintea Lui.``

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.

7 Ş i Domnul a zis lui Samuel:,, Nu te uita la înfăţişarea şi înălţimea staturii lui, căci l-am lepădat. Domnul nu se uită la ce se uită omul; omul se uită la ceea ce izbeşte ochii, dar Domnul se uită la inimă.``

But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

8 I sai a chemat pe Abinadab, şi l -a trecut pe dinaintea lui Samuel; şi Samuel a zis:,, Nici pe acesta nu l -a ales Domnul.``

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

9 I sai a trecut pe Şama; şi Samuel a zis:,, Nici pe acesta nu l -a ales Domnul.``

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this.

10 Ş i aşa a trecut Isai pe cei şapte fii ai lui pe dinaintea lui Samuel; şi Samuel a zis lui Isai:,, Domnul n'a ales pe niciunul din ei.``

And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these.

11 A poi Samuel a zis lui Isai:,, Aceştia sînt toţi fiii tăi?``. Şi el a răspuns:,, A mai rămas cel mai tînăr, dar paşte oile.`` Atunci Samuel a zis lui Isai:,, Trimite să -l aducă, fiindcă nu vom şedea la masă pînă nu va veni aici.``

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 I sai a trimes să -l aducă. Şi el era cu păr bălai, cu ochi frumoşi şi faţă frumoasă. Domnul a zis lui Samuel:,, Scoală-te, şi unge -l, căci el este!``

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.

13 S amuel a luat cornul cu untdelemn, şi l -a uns în mijlocul fraţilor lui. Duhul Domnului a venit peste David, începînd din ziua aceea şi în cele următoare. Samuel s'a sculat, şi s'a dus la Rama.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 D uhul Domnului S'a depărtat dela Saul; şi a fost muncit de un duh rău care venea dela Domnul.

Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.

15 S lujitorii lui Saul i-au zis:,, Iată că un duh rău dela Dumnezeu te munceşte.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 P oruncească numai domnul nostru! Robii tăi sînt înaintea ta. Ei vor căuta un om care să ştie să cînte cu arfa; şi, cînd duhul rău trimes de Dumnezeu, va fi peste tine, el va cînta cu mîna, şi vei fi uşurat.``

Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 S aul a răspuns slujitorilor săi:,, Găsiţi-mi dar un om care să cînte bine, şi aduceţi -l la mine.``

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 U nul din slujitori a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:,, Iată, am văzut pe un fiu al lui Isai, Betleemitul, care ştie să cînte; el este şi un om tare şi voinic, un războinic, vorbeşte bine, este frumos la chip, şi Domnul este cu el.``

Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him.

19 S aul a trimes nişte oameni la Isai, să -i spună:,, Trimete-mi pe fiul tău David, care este cu oile.``

Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.

20 I sai a luat un măgar, l -a încărcat cu pîne, cu un burduf cu vin şi cu un ied, şi a trimes lui Saul aceste lucruri, prin fiul său David.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 D avid a ajuns la Saul, şi s'a înfăţişat înaintea lui; i -a plăcut mult lui Saul, şi a fost pus să -i poarte armele.

And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer.

22 S aul a trimes vorbă lui Isai, zicînd:,, Te rog să laşi pe David în slujba mea, căci a căpătat trecere înaintea mea.``

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight.

23 Ş i cînd duhul trimes de Dumnezeu venea peste Saul, David lua arfa şi cînta cu mîna lui; Saul răsufla atunci mai uşor, se simţea uşurat, şi duhul cel rău pleca dela el.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
