1 C uvintele împăratului Lemuel. Învăţătura pe care i -o dădea mamă-sa.

The words of king Lemuel; the oracle which his mother taught him.

2 C e să-ţi spun, fiule? Ce să-ţi spun fiul trupului meu? Ce să-ţi spun, fiule, rodul juruinţelor mele?

What, my son? and what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows?

3 N u-ţi da femeilor vlaga, şi desmierdările tale celor ce pierd pe împăraţi.

Give not thy strength unto women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

4 N u se cade împăraţilor, Lemuele, nu se cade împăraţilor să bea vin, nici voivozilor să umble după băuturi tari;

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Nor for princes to say, Where is strong drink?

5 c a nu cumva, bînd, să uite legea, şi să calce drepturile tuturor celor nenorociţi.

Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the justice due to any that is afflicted.

6 D aţi băuturi tari celui ce piere, şi vin, celui cu sufletul amărît;

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, And wine unto the bitter in soul:

7 c a să bea să-şi uite sărăcia, şi să nu-şi mai aducă aminte de necazurile lui. -

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more.

8 D eschide-ţi gura pentru cel mut, pentru pricina tuturor celor părăsiţi!

Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of all such as are left desolate.

9 D eschide-ţi gura, judecă cu dreptate, şi apără pe cel nenorocit şi pe cel lipsit.

Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And minister justice to the poor and needy.

10 C ine poate găsi o femeie cinstită? Ea este mai de preţ decît mărgăritarele.

A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.

11 I nima bărbatului se încrede în ea, şi nu duce lipsă de venituri.

The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he shall have no lack of gain.

12 E a îi face bine, şi nu rău, în toate zilele vieţii sale.

She doeth him good and not evil All the days of her life.

13 E a face rost de lînă şi de in, şi lucrează cu mîni harnice.

She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.

14 E a este ca o corabie de negoţ; de departe îşi aduce pînea.

She is like the merchant-ships; She bringeth her bread from afar.

15 E a se scoală cînd este încă noapte, şi dă hrană casei sale, şi împarte lucrul de peste zi slujnicelor sale.

She riseth also while it is yet night, And giveth food to her household, And their task to her maidens.

16 S e gîndeşte la un ogor, şi -l cumpără; din rodul muncii ei sădeşte o vie. -

She considereth a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 E a îşi încinge mijlocul cu putere, şi îşi oţeleşte braţele.

She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.

18 V ede că munca îi merge bine, lumina ei nu se stinge noaptea.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is profitable: Her lamp goeth not out by night.

19 E a pune mîna pe furcă, şi degetele ei ţin fusul.

She layeth her hands to the distaff, And her hands hold the spindle.

20 E a îşi întinde mîna către cel nenorocit, îşi întinde braţul către cel lipsit.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 N u se teme de zăpadă pentru casa ei, căci toată casa ei este îmbrăcată cu cărmiziu.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household; For all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 E a îşi face învelitori, are haine de in supţire şi purpură.

She maketh for herself carpets of tapestry; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

23 B ărbatul ei este bine văzut la porţi, cînd şade cu bătrînii ţării.

Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 E a face cămăşi, şi le vinde, şi dă cingători negustorului.

She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 E a este îmbrăcată cu tărie şi slavă, şi rîde de ziua de mîne.

Strength and dignity are her clothing; And she laugheth at the time to come.

26 E a deschide gura cu înţelepciune, şi învăţături plăcute îi sînt pe limbă.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; And the law of kindness is on her tongue.

27 E a veghează asupra celor ce se petrec în casa ei, şi nu mănîncă pînea lenevirii.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 F iii ei se scoală, şi o numesc fericită; bărbatul ei se scoală, şi -i aduce laude zicînd:

Her children rise up, and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying:

29 M ulte fete au o purtare cinstită, dar tu le întreci pe toate.``

Many daughters have done worthily, But thou excellest them all.

30 D esmerdările sînt înşelătoare, şi frumuseţa este deşartă, dar femeia care se teme de Domnul va fi lăudată.

Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; But a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised.

31 R ăsplătiţi -o cu rodul muncii ei, şi faptele ei s'o laude la porţile cetăţii

Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates.
