1 U n fiu înţelept ascultă învăţătura tatălui său, dar batjocoritorul n'ascultă mustrarea. -

A wise son heareth his father's instruction; But a scoffer heareth not rebuke.

2 P rin rodul gurii ai parte de bine, dar cei stricaţi au parte de sîlnicie. -

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth; But the soul of the treacherous shall eat violence.

3 C ine-şi păzeşte gura, îşi păzeşte sufletul; cine-şi deschide buzele mari aleargă spre pieirea lui. -

He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; But he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

4 L eneşul doreşte mult, şi totuş, n'are nimic, dar cei harnici se satură. -

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

5 C el neprihănit urăşte cuvintele mincinoase, dar cel rău se face urît şi se acoperă de ruşine. -

A righteous man hateth lying; But a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

6 N eprihănirea păzeşte pe cel nevinovat, dar răutatea aduce pierzarea păcătosului. -

Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way; But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

7 U nul face pe bogatul, şi n'are nimic, altul face pe săracul, şi are totuş mari avuţii, -

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: There is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great wealth.

8 O mul cu bogăţia lui îşi răscumpără viaţa, dar săracul n'ascultă mustrarea. -

The ransom of a man's life is his riches; But the poor heareth no threatening.

9 L umina celor neprihăniţi arde voioasă, dar candela celor răi se stinge. -

The light of the righteous rejoiceth; But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10 P rin mîndrie se aţîţă numai certuri, dar înţelepciunea este cu cel ce ascultă sfaturile. -

By pride cometh only contention; But with the well-advised is wisdom.

11 B ogăţia cîştigată fără trudă scade, dar ce se strînge încetul cu încetul, creşte. -

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished; But he that gathereth by labor shall have increase.

12 O nădejde amînată îmbolnăveşte inima, dar o dorinţă împlinită este un pom de viaţă. -

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; But when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

13 C ine nesocoteşte Cuvîntul Domnului se pierde, dar cine se teme de poruncă este răsplătit. -

Whoso despiseth the word bringeth destruction on himself; But he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

14 Î nvăţătura înţeleptului este un izvor de viaţă, ca să abată pe om din cursele morţii. -

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, That one may depart from the snares of death.

15 O minte sănătoasă cîştigă bunăvoinţă, dar calea celor stricaţi este pietroasă. -

Good understanding giveth favor; But the way of the transgressor is hard.

16 O rice om chibzuit lucrează cu cunoştinţă, dar nebunul îşi dă la iveală nebunia. -

Every prudent man worketh with knowledge; But a fool flaunteth his folly.

17 U n sol rău cade în nenorocire, dar un sol credincios aduce tămăduire. -

A wicked messenger falleth into evil; But a faithful ambassador is health.

18 S ărăcia şi ruşinea sînt partea celui ce leapădă certarea, dar cel ce ia seama la mustrare este pus în cinste. -

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth correction; But he that regardeth reproof shall be honored.

19 Î mplinirea unei dorinţe este dulce sufletului, dar celor nebuni le este urît să se lase de rău. -

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.

20 C ine umblă cu înţelepţii se face înţelept, dar cui îi place să se însoţească cu nebunii o duce rău. -

Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise; But the companion of fools shall smart for it.

21 N enorocirea urmăreşte pe cei ce păcătuiesc, dar cei neprihăniţi vor fi răsplătiţi cu fericire.

Evil pursueth sinners; But the righteous shall be recompensed with good.

22 O mul de bine lasă moştenitori pe copiii copiilor săi, dar bogăţiile păcătosului sînt păstrate pentru cel neprihănit. -

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children; And the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.

23 O gorul pe care -l desţelineşte săracul dă o hrană îmbelşugată, dar mulţi pier din pricina nedreptăţii lor. -

Much food is in the tillage of the poor; But there is that is destroyed by reason of injustice.

24 C ine cruţă nuiaua, urăşte pe fiul său, dar cine -l iubeşte, îl pedepseşte îndată. -

He that spareth his rod hateth his son; But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

25 C el neprihănit mănîncă pînă se satură, dar pîntecele celor răi duce lipsă. -

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul; But the belly of the wicked shall want.
