1 E lifaz din Teman a luat cuvîntul şi a zis:

Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 P oate un om să aducă vreun folos lui Dumnezeu? Nu; ci înţeleptul nu-şi foloseşte de cît lui.

Can a man be profitable unto God? Surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

3 D acă eşti fără prihană, are Cel Atotputernic vre un folos? Şi dacă trăieşti fără vină, ce va cîştiga El?

Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 P entru evlavia ta te pedepseşte El oare, şi intră la judecată cu tine?

Is it for thy fear of him that he reproveth thee, That he entereth with thee into judgment?

5 N u -i mare răutatea ta? Şi fărădelegile tale fără număr?

Is not thy wickedness great? Neither is there any end to thine iniquities.

6 L uai fără pricină zăloage dela fraţii tăi, lăsai fără haine pe cei goi.

For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, And stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 N u dădeai apă omului însetat, nu voiai să dai pîne omului flămînd.

Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 Ţ ara era a ta, fiindcă erai mai tare, te aşezai în ea, fiindcă erai cu vază.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; And the honorable man, he dwelt in it.

9 D ădeai afară pe văduve cu mînile goale, şi braţele orfanilor le frîngeai.

Thou hast sent widows away empty, And the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 P entru aceea eşti înconjurat de curse, şi te -a apucat groaza dintr'o dată.

Therefore snares are round about thee, And sudden fear troubleth thee,

11 N u vezi dar acest întunerec, aceste ape multe cari te năpădesc?

Or darkness, so that thou canst not see, And abundance of waters cover thee.

12 N u este Dumnezeu sus în ceruri? Priveşte vîrful stelelor, ce înalt este!

Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 Ş i tu zici:, Ce ştie Dumnezeu? Poate să judece El prin întunerecul de nori?

And thou sayest, What doth God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?

14 Î l înfăşoară norii, nu vede nimic, bolta cerească abea dacă o străbate!`

Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not; And he walketh on the vault of heaven.

15 C e! vrei s'apuci pe calea străveche, pe care au urmat -o cei nelegiuiţi,

Wilt thou keep the old way Which wicked men have trodden?

16 c ari au fost luaţi înainte de vreme, şi au ţinut cît ţine un pîrîu care se scurge?

Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

17 E i ziceau lui Dumnezeu:, Pleacă dela noi! Ce ne poate face Cel Atot puternic?`

Who said unto God, Depart from us; And, What can the Almighty do for us?

18 Ş i totuş Dumnezeu le umpluse casele de bunătăţi. -Departe de mine sfatul celor răi! -

Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 C ei fără prihană vor fi martori ai căderii lor şi se vor bucura, cel nevinovat va rîde de ei

The righteous see it, and are glad; And the innocent laugh them to scorn,

20 ş i va zice:, Iată pe protivnicii noştri nimiciţi! Iată-le bogăţiile arse de foc!`

Saying, Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off, And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed.

21 Î mprieteneşte-te dar cu Dumnezeu, şi vei avea pace; te vei bucura astfel iarăş de fericire.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: Thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 P rimeşte învăţătură din gura Lui, şi pune-ţi la inimă cuvintele Lui.

Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, And lay up his words in thy heart.

23 V ei fi aşezat iarăş la locul tău, dacă te vei întoarce la Cel Atot puternic, dacă depărtezi fărădelegea din cortul tău.

If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents.

24 A runcă dar aurul în ţărînă, aruncă aurul din Ofir în prundul pîraielor!

And lay thou thy treasure in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks;

25 Ş i atunci Cel Atot puternic va fi aurul tău, argintul tău, bogăţia ta.

And the Almighty will be thy treasure, And precious silver unto thee.

26 A tunci Cel Atot puternic va fi desfătarea ta, şi îţi vei ridica faţa spre Dumnezeu.

For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, And shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 Î l vei ruga, şi te va asculta, şi îţi vei putea împlini juruinţele.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee; And thou shalt pay thy vows.

28 P e ce vei pune mîna îţi va izbuti, pe cărările tale va străluci lumina.

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; And light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 V ină smerirea, tu te vei ruga pentru ridicarea ta: Dumnezeu ajută pe cel cu ochii plecaţi.

When they cast thee down, thou shalt say, There is lifting up; And the humble person he will save.

30 E l va izbăvi chiar şi pe cel vinovat, care îşi va datora scăparea curăţiei mînilor tale.``

He will deliver even him that is not innocent: Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.
