1 E xistía entonces Jefté, galaadita, hombre valiente, hijo de una ramera, a la cual Galaad había engendrado un hijo.

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

2 Y la mujer de Galaad también le había dado a luz hijos; los cuales cuando fueron grandes, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de una mujer extraña.

And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.

3 H uyendo, pues, Jefté a causa de sus hermanos, habitó en tierra de Tob; y se juntaron con él hombres vacíos, los cuales salían con él.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

4 ¶ Y aconteció que después de algunos días los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.

And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 Y como los hijos de Amón tenían guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron para traer a Jefté de tierra de Tob;

And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

6 y dijeron a Jefté: Ven, y serás nuestro capitán, para que peleemos con los hijos de Amón.

and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

7 Y Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me habéis vosotros aborrecido, y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en aflicción?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros, y pelees contra los hijos de Amón, y nos seas cabeza de todos los que moramos en Galaad.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 J efté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y el SEÑOR los entregare delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestra cabeza?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

10 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: que el SEÑOR oiga entre nosotros, si no hiciéremos como tú dices.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

11 E ntonces Jefté vino con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió por su cabeza y príncipe; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del SEÑOR en Mizpa.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

12 ¶ Y envió Jefté embajadores al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: ¿Qué tienes tú conmigo que has venido a mí para hacer guerra en mi tierra?

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

13 Y el rey de los amonitas respondió a los embajadores de Jefté: Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto, devuélvela ahora en paz.

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

14 Y Jefté volvió a enviar otros embajadores al rey de los amonitas,

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

15 d iciéndole: Jefté ha dicho así: Israel no tomó tierra de Moab, ni tierra de los hijos de Amón;

and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

16 m as subiendo Israel de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el mar Bermejo, y llegó a Cades.

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

17 E ntonces Israel envió embajadores al rey de Edom, diciendo: Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra. Mas el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también al rey de Moab; el cual tampoco quiso; se quedó por tanto Israel en Cades.

then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 D espués, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y viniendo por donde nace el sol a la tierra de Moab, asentó su campamento al otro lado de Arnón, y no entraron por el término de Moab; porque Arnón término es de Moab.

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 Y envió Israel embajadores a Sehón rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

20 M as Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su término; antes juntando Sehón todo su pueblo, puso campamento en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

21 P ero el SEÑOR Dios de Israel entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en mano de Israel, y los venció; y poseyó Israel toda la tierra del amorreo que habitaba en aquella tierra.

And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

22 P oseyeron también todo el término del amorreo desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

23 A sí que el SEÑOR el Dios de Israel echó a los amorreos delante de su pueblo Israel; ¿y lo has de poseer tú?

So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

24 S i Quemos tu dios te echara alguno, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así, poseeremos nosotros a todo aquel que echó el SEÑOR nuestro Dios de delante de nosotros.

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

25 ¿ Eres tú ahora en algo mejor que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Por ventura tuvo él contención contra Israel? ¿Por ventura hizo guerra contra ellos?

And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

26 A demás, Israel ha estado habitando por trescientos años en Hesbón y sus aldeas, en Aroer y sus aldeas, y todas las ciudades que están a los términos de Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recobrado en ese tiempo?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

27 A sí que, yo nada he pecado contra ti, mas tú haces mal conmigo haciéndome guerra; el SEÑOR, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.

I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

28 M as el rey de los hijos de Amón no oyó las razones de Jefté que le envió.

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 ¶ Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR fue sobre Jefté; y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y de allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

30 Y Jefté hizo voto al SEÑOR, diciendo: Si entregares a los amonitas en mis manos,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

31 c ualquiera que me saliere a recibir de las puertas de mi casa, cuando volviere de los amonitas en paz, será del SEÑOR, y le ofreceré en holocausto.

then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

32 P asó pues Jefté a los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y el SEÑOR los entregó en su mano.

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

33 Y los hirió de grandísimo estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades; y hasta la vega de las viñas. Así fueron dominados los amonitas delante de los hijos de Israel.

And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 Y volviendo Jefté a Mizpa a su casa, he aquí que su hija le salió a recibir con adufes y danzas, y era la sola, la única suya; no tenía fuera de ella otro hijo ni hija.

And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 Y cuando él la vio, rompió sus vestidos diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido mucho, y tú eres de los que me afligen; porque yo he abierto mi boca al SEÑOR, y no podré retractarme.

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

36 E lla entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si has abierto tu boca al SEÑOR, haz de mí como salió de tu boca, pues que el SEÑOR te ha hecho venganza de tus enemigos los hijos de Amón.

And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

37 Y volvió a decir a su padre: Concédeme esto: déjame por dos meses que vaya y descienda por los montes, y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

38 E l entonces dijo: Ve. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 P asados los dos meses volvió a su padre, e hizo de ella conforme al voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón.

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 D e aquí fue la costumbre en Israel que de año en año iban las doncellas de Israel a endechar a la hija de Jefté, galaadita, cuatro días en el año.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
