1 ¶ Y cuando Saúl volvió de los filisteos, le dieron aviso diciendo: He aquí que David está en el desierto de En-gadi.

And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.

2 Y tomando Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, fue en busca de David y de los suyos, por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses.

Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

3 Y cuando llegó a una majada de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, entró Saúl en ella a hacer sus necesidades; y David y los suyos estaban sentados a los lados de la cueva.

And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave.

4 E ntonces los de David le dijeron: He aquí el día que te ha dicho el SEÑOR: He aquí que yo entrego tu enemigo en tus manos, y harás con él como te pareciere. Y se levantó David, y calladamente cortó la orilla de la ropa de Saúl.

And the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of which Jehovah said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

5 D espués de lo cual el corazón de David le hirió, porque había cortado la orilla de la ropa de Saúl.

And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

6 Y dijo a los suyos: El SEÑOR me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido del SEÑOR, que yo extienda mi mano contra él; porque es ungido del SEÑOR.

And he said unto his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing unto my lord, Jehovah's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is Jehovah's anointed.

7 A sí quebrantó David a los suyos con palabras, y no les permitió que se levantaran contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, se fue su camino.

So David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

8 T ambién David se levantó después, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces a las espaldas de Saúl, diciendo: ¡Mi señor el rey! Y cuando Saúl miró atrás, David inclinó su rostro a tierra, y adoró.

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.

9 ¶ Y dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué oyes las palabras de los que dicen: Mira que David procura tu mal?

And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

10 H e aquí han visto hoy tus ojos cómo el SEÑOR te ha puesto hoy en mis manos en esta cueva; y dijeron que te matara, mas te perdoné, porque dije: No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque ungido es del SEÑOR.

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee; but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Jehovah's anointed.

11 Y mira, padre mío, mira aún la orilla de tu ropa en mi mano; porque yo corté la orilla de tu manto, y no te maté. Conoce, pues, y ve que no hay mal ni traición en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti; con todo, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela.

Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee, though thou huntest after my life to take it.

12 J uzgue el SEÑOR entre mí y ti, y véngueme de ti el SEÑOR; pero mi mano no será contra ti.

Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

13 C omo dice el proverbio del antiguo: De los impíos saldrá la impiedad; así que mi mano no será contra ti.

As saith the proverb of the ancients, Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee.

14 ¿ Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga?

After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

15 E l SEÑOR, pues, será juez, y él juzgará entre mí y ti. El vea, y pleitee mi pleito, y me defienda de tu mano.

Jehovah therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.

16 ¶ Y aconteció que, cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, Saúl dijo: ¿No es esta la voz tuya, hijo mío David? Y alzando Saúl su voz lloró.

And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

17 Y dijo a David: Más justo eres tú que yo, que me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal.

And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil.

18 T ú has mostrado hoy que has hecho conmigo bien; pues no me has dado muerte, habiéndome el SEÑOR puesto en tus manos.

And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou killedst me not.

19 P orque ¿quién hallará a su enemigo, y lo dejará ir sano y salvo? El SEÑOR te pague con bien por lo que en este día has hecho conmigo.

For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day.

20 Y ahora, como yo entiendo que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel ha de ser en tu mano firme y estable,

And now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand.

21 j úrame, pues, ahora por el SEÑOR, que no talarás mi simiente después de mí, ni raerás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre.

Swear now therefore unto me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

22 E ntonces David juró a Saúl. Y se fue Saúl a su casa, y David y los suyos se subieron a su fuerte.

And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the stronghold.
