1 ¶ Y reposó Israel en Sitim, y el pueblo empezó a fornicar con las hijas de Moab,

And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab:

2 l as cuales llamaron al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; y el pueblo comió, y se inclinó a sus dioses.

for they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

3 Y al acercarse Israel a Baal-peor; el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel.

And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.

4 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés: Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo, y descoyúntelos ante el SEÑOR colgándoles de un madero delante del sol; y la ira del furor del SEÑOR se apartará de Israel.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.

5 E ntonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: Matad cada uno a sus varones que se han juntado con Baal-peor.

And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that have joined themselves unto Baal-peor.

6 ¶ Entonces he aquí un varón de los hijos de Israel vino y trajo una madianita a sus hermanos, a ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, llorando ellos a la puerta del tabernáculo del testimonio.

And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.

7 Y lo vio Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón sacerdote, y se levantó de en medio de la congregación, y tomó una lanza en su mano;

And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;

8 y fue tras el varón de Israel a la tienda, y los alanceó a ambos, al varón de Israel, y a la mujer por su vientre. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

9 Y murieron de aquella mortandad veinticuatro mil.

And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

10 E ntonces el SEÑOR habló a Moisés, diciendo:

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

11 F inees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón sacerdote, ha hecho apartar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, llevado de celo entre ellos; por lo cual yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel.

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

12 P or tanto diles: He aquí yo establezco mi pacto de paz con él;

Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

13 y tendrá él, y su simiente después de él, el pacto del sacerdocio perpetuo; por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios, y reconcilió los hijos de Israel.

and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

14 Y el nombre del varón muerto, que fue muerto con la madianita, era Zimri hijo de Salu, príncipe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.

Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites.

15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta, era Cozbi, hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, de la casa del padre en Madián.

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian.

16 ¶ Y el SEÑOR habló a Moisés, diciendo:

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

17 A fligiréis a los madianitas, y los heriréis;

Vex the Midianites, and smite them;

18 p or cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros con sus engaños, con que os han engañado en el negocio de Peor, y en el negocio de Cozbi, hija del príncipe de Madián, su hermana, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad por causa de Peor.

for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.
