1 A nd it came to pass, when all the kings that were beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and on all the shore of the great sea in front of Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

Cuando se supo esto, todos los reyes hititas, amorreos, cananeos, ferezeos, jivitas y jebuseos, que habitaban en las montañas y llanos, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande frente al Líbano, de este lado del Jordán,

2 t hat they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

se pusieron de acuerdo para pelear contra Josué y el pueblo de Israel.

3 B ut when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

Pero cuando los habitantes de Gabaón supieron lo que Josué había hecho en Jericó y en Hai,

4 t hey also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,

astutamente planearon fingir que eran embajadores, así que echaron sobre sus asnos unos sacos viejos, y odres de vino viejos, rotos y remendados,

5 a nd old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.

y se pusieron además vestidos viejos y sandalias viejas y recosidas, y tomaron para el camino pan que estaba todo seco y mohoso.

6 A nd they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.

Entonces fueron al campamento de Josué, que estaba en Gilgal, y le dijeron a él y al pueblo: «Venimos de un país muy lejano. Queremos que ustedes hagan una alianza con nosotros.»

7 A nd the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?

Los israelitas les dijeron a los jivitas: «Tal vez ustedes viven en medio de nosotros. ¿Por qué habríamos de hacer una alianza con ustedes?»

8 A nd they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

Ellos respondieron: «Porque nosotros somos tus siervos.» Pero Josué les preguntó: «¿Quiénes son ustedes? ¿De dónde vienen?»

9 A nd they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

Ellos le dijeron: «Venimos de un país muy lejano, por causa del nombre del Señor tu Dios. Hemos oído hablar de su fama, y sabemos lo que hizo en Egipto,

10 a nd all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

así como lo que hizo con los dos reyes de los amorreos al otro lado del Jordán, es decir, con Sijón, el rey de Jesbón, y con Og, el rey de Basán, en Astarot.

11 A nd our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: and now make ye a covenant with us.

Fue esto lo que llevó a los ancianos y los habitantes de nuestra tierra a decirnos: “Tomen provisiones para el camino, y procuren encontrarse con ellos y decirles que somos sus siervos y queremos que hagan una alianza con nosotros.”

12 T his our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and is become mouldy:

Miren el pan que hemos traído para el camino: el día que partimos para venir a su encuentro, lo tomamos de nuestras casas y estaba caliente; pero mírenlo ahora; ¡está seco y mohoso!

13 a nd these wine-skins, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they are rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

Estos odres de vino también estaban nuevos cuando los llenamos, y ahora ya están rotos. Nuestros vestidos y sandalias ya se han gastado, porque el camino ha sido muy largo.»

14 A nd the men took of their provision, and asked not counsel at the mouth of Jehovah.

Los hombres de Israel tomaron parte de sus provisiones sin consultarlo con el Señor,

15 A nd Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

y Josué concertó con ellos la paz y celebró la alianza, con lo cual les concedió la vida. Y los jefes de la comunidad estuvieron de acuerdo con él.

16 A nd it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.

Tres días después de haber celebrado alianza se dieron cuenta de que en realidad eran sus vecinos, y que vivían en medio de ellos.

17 A nd the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.

Así que al tercer día los hijos de Israel salieron y llegaron a Gabaón, Cafira, Berot y Quiriat Yearín, que eran ciudades de los gabaonitas,

18 A nd the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

pero no los mataron porque, en el nombre del Señor, Dios de Israel, los jefes de la comunidad habían jurado perdonarles la vida. Por eso toda la comunidad murmuró contra los jefes,

19 B ut all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by Jehovah, the God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

pero ellos respondieron: «Nosotros hemos hecho un juramento en nombre del Señor, Dios de Israel; por lo tanto, no los podemos tocar.

20 T his we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

Los dejaremos vivir, para no provocar el enojo del Señor.»

21 A nd the princes said unto them, Let them live: so they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation, as the princes had spoken unto them.

Entonces los jefes dijeron: «Déjenlos vivir, y que sean leñadores y aguadores, para el servicio de toda la comunidad.» Y fue así como se les concedió la vida, tal y como lo habían prometido los jefes.

22 A nd Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Sin embargo, Josué los llamó y les preguntó: «¿Por qué nos engañaron y dijeron que venían de muy lejos, cuando en realidad son nuestros vecinos?

23 N ow therefore ye are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondmen, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Puesto que nos han engañado, ahora voy a ponerlos al servicio de la casa de Dios. No habrá uno solo de ustedes que no corte la leña y saque el agua para la casa de mi Dios.»

24 A nd they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that Jehovah thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

Ellos le respondieron: «Somos tus siervos. Según entendimos, el Señor tu Dios le prometió a su siervo Moisés que les daría a ustedes estas tierras, y que destruiría a todos sus habitantes. Lo que hicimos se debió a que, cuando los vimos cerca de nosotros, tuvimos miedo de perder la vida.

25 A nd now, behold, we are in thy hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

Pero aquí nos tienes. Haz con nosotros lo que te parezca mejor.»

26 A nd so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

Entonces Josué los libró de morir a manos de los hijos de Israel,

27 A nd Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

y desde ese día los destinó a ser los leñadores y aguadores de la comunidad y del altar del Señor, en el lugar que el Señor eligiera, y eso es lo que son hasta el día de hoy.
