1 O n that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.

Ese mismo día, el rey Asuero entregó a la reina Ester la casa de Amán, el enemigo de los judíos; y Mardoqueo se presentó ante el rey, porque Ester le había hecho saber al rey el parentesco que había entre ellos.

2 A nd the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Entonces el rey se quitó el anillo que le había dado a Amán, y se lo dio a Mardoqueo. Ester, por su parte, puso a Mardoqueo sobre la casa de Amán.

3 A nd Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.

Luego Ester volvió a presentarse ante el rey. Se arrojó a sus pies, y con lágrimas le rogó anular el daño que Amán había pensado hacer contra los judíos.

4 T hen the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king.

El rey extendió hacia Ester su cetro de oro, y entonces Ester se levantó y se puso en pie delante del rey,

5 A nd she said, If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king's provinces:

y dijo: «Si a Su Majestad le parece bien, y yo soy digna de su bondad, emita Su Majestad una orden por escrito que revoque las cartas que autorizan la destrucción de los judíos, ordenada por Amán hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, y que circulan por todas las provincias del rey.

6 f or how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

¡Yo no podría ver el mal que le harán a mi pueblo! ¿Cómo podría yo soportar el ver la destrucción de mi nación?»

7 T hen the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.

El rey Asuero les respondió a la reina Ester y al judío Mardoqueo: «Ya le he otorgado a Ester la casa de Amán, y a él lo han colgado en la horca por haber atentado contra la vida de los judíos.

8 W rite ye also to the Jews, as it pleaseth you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring; for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.

Escriban a todos los judíos, a nombre mío, lo que a ustedes les parezca bien, y sellen ese escrito con mi anillo. Como saben, un edicto que se escribe a nombre del rey, y que se sella con su anillo, no puede ser revocado.»

9 T hen were the king's scribes called at that time, in the third month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.

Y así, el día veintitrés del mes tercero, que es Siván, fueron llamados los escribas del rey para que escribieran todo lo que Mardoqueo les iba a dictar. Ese edicto fue enviado a los judíos, y a los sátrapas, capitanes y príncipes de las provincias que había desde la India hasta Etiopía; eran ciento veintisiete provincias, y a cada una se le escribió en su propia lengua y con su propia escritura. También a los judíos se les escribió en su propia lengua y con su propia escritura.

10 A nd he wrote the name of king Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by post on horseback, riding on swift steeds that were used in the king's service, bred of the stud:

Mardoqueo escribió el edicto a nombre del rey Asuero, y lo selló con el anillo del rey, y lo envió por medio de correos montados en veloces caballos de las caballerizas reales.

11 w herein the king granted the Jews that were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,

Ese edicto facultaba a los judíos en todas las ciudades a reunirse y defenderse, y hasta destruir, matar y acabar con toda fuerza armada del pueblo o provincia que los atacara, incluyendo a sus niños y mujeres, y apoderarse de sus bienes.

12 u pon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

Esto debía hacerse en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, en el día trece del mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar.

13 A copy of the writing, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published unto all the peoples, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

La copia del edicto que se envió por decreto a cada provincia, para que se conociera en todos los pueblos, decía que los judíos debían estar preparados ese día para vengarse de sus enemigos.

14 S o the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace.

El edicto fue dado en Susa, capital del reino, y por orden del rey los correos partieron a toda prisa, montados en caballos veloces.

15 A nd Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad.

Cuando Mardoqueo salió de la presencia del rey, llevaba puesto un vestido real de azul y blanco, una gran corona de oro, y un manto de lino y púrpura. Al verlo, la ciudad de Susa se alegró y regocijó mucho,

16 T he Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honor.

y a los judíos se les iluminó el rostro de alegría, gozo y honra.

17 A nd in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

Y en todas las provincias y ciudades a las que llegó el decreto del rey, los judíos se veían alegres y gozosos, y fue un día de banquete y de placer. Y fue tal el temor que los judíos infundían, que mucha gente de los pueblos del país se hizo judía.
