1 O n that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.

In quello stesso giorno il re Assuero donò alla regina Ester la casa di Aman, il nemico dei Giudei. E Mardocheo si presentò al re, perché Ester aveva dichiarato la parentela che li univa.

2 A nd the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Il re sfilò l’anello che aveva fatto togliere ad Aman e lo diede a Mardocheo. Ed Ester diede a Mardocheo il governo della casa di Aman.

3 A nd Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews.

Poi Ester parlò di nuovo al re, si gettò ai suoi piedi e lo supplicò con le lacrime agli occhi d’impedire gli effetti della malvagità di Aman, l’Agaghita, e delle trame da lui ordite contro i Giudei.

4 T hen the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king.

Allora il re stese lo scettro d’oro verso Ester; ed Ester si alzò, rimase in piedi davanti al re

5 A nd she said, If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king's provinces:

e disse: «Se così piace al re, se io ho trovato grazia agli occhi suoi, se la cosa gli pare giusta e se io gli sono gradita, si scriva per revocare le lettere scritte da Aman, figlio di Ammedata, l’Agaghita, con il perfido proposito di far perire i Giudei che sono in tutte le province del re.

6 f or how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

Perché come potrei io reggere nel vedere la calamità che colpirebbe il mio popolo? Come potrei reggere nel vedere la distruzione della mia stirpe?»

7 T hen the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews.

Allora il re Assuero disse alla regina Ester e a Mardocheo, il Giudeo: «Ecco, io ho dato a Ester la casa di Aman, e questi è stato appeso alla forca, perché aveva voluto mettere la mano addosso ai Giudei.

8 W rite ye also to the Jews, as it pleaseth you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring; for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse.

Scrivete dunque, in favore dei Giudei, come vi parrà meglio, nel nome del re, e sigillate con l’anello reale; perché ciò che è scritto in nome del re e sigillato con l’anello reale è irrevocabile».

9 T hen were the king's scribes called at that time, in the third month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.

Senza perdere tempo, il giorno ventitré del terzo mese, cioè il mese di Sivan, furono chiamati i segretari del re, che scrissero, seguendo in tutto l’ordine di Mardocheo, ai Giudei, ai satrapi, ai governatori e ai capi delle centoventisette province, dall’India all’Etiopia, a ogni provincia nella sua scrittura, a ogni popolo nella sua lingua e ai Giudei nella loro scrittura e nella loro lingua.

10 A nd he wrote the name of king Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by post on horseback, riding on swift steeds that were used in the king's service, bred of the stud:

Si scrisse dunque in nome del re Assuero, si sigillarono le lettere con l’anello reale e si mandarono per mezzo di corrieri che cavalcavano cavalli veloci, usati per il servizio del re, nati da stalloni reali.

11 w herein the king granted the Jews that were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,

Con queste lettere il re autorizzava i Giudei, in qualunque città si trovassero, a radunarsi e a difendere la loro vita, a distruggere, uccidere, sterminare, senza escludere i bambini e le donne, tutta la gente armata, di qualunque popolo e di qualunque provincia fosse, che li assalisse, e a saccheggiare i suoi beni;

12 u pon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.

e ciò, in un medesimo giorno, in tutte le province del re Assuero: il tredici del dodicesimo mese, cioè il mese di Adar.

13 A copy of the writing, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published unto all the peoples, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

Queste lettere contenevano una copia del decreto che doveva essere bandito in ogni provincia e pubblicato fra tutti i popoli, perché i Giudei si tenessero pronti per quel giorno a vendicarsi dei loro nemici.

14 S o the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace.

Così i corrieri che cavalcavano cavalli veloci, usati per il servizio del re, partirono immediatamente, in tutta fretta, per ordine del re; e il decreto fu promulgato nella residenza reale di Susa.

15 A nd Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad.

Mardocheo uscì dalla presenza del re con una veste reale viola e bianca, con una grande corona d’oro e un mantello di bisso e di porpora; la città di Susa alzava grida di gioia ed era in festa.

16 T he Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honor.

I Giudei poi erano raggianti di gioia, di entusiasmo e di gloria.

17 A nd in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

In ogni provincia, in ogni città, dovunque giungevano l’ordine del re e il suo decreto, ci furono, tra i Giudei, gioia, entusiasmo, banchetti e feste. Molte persone appartenenti ai popoli del paese si fecero Giudei, perché il timore dei Giudei si era impadronito di loro.
