1 A fter these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was pacified, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

Dopo queste cose, quando l’ira del re fu calmata, egli si ricordò di Vasti, di ciò che lei aveva fatto e di quanto era stato deciso a suo riguardo.

2 T hen said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:

Quelli che stavano al servizio del re dissero: «Si cerchino per il re delle ragazze vergini e di bell’aspetto;

3 a nd let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them;

il re stabilisca in tutte le province del suo regno dei commissari; questi radunino tutte le ragazze vergini e belle alla residenza reale di Susa, negli appartamenti delle donne, sotto la sorveglianza di Egai, eunuco del re, guardiano delle donne, che darà loro i cosmetici di cui necessitano;

4 a nd let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

e la giovane che piacerà al re diventi regina al posto di Vasti». La cosa piacque al re, e così si fece.

5 T here was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,

6 w ho had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives that had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

che era stato condotto via da Gerusalemme tra gli schiavi deportati con Ieconia, re di Giuda, da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia.

7 A nd he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

Egli aveva allevato la figlia di suo zio, Adassa, cioè Ester, che non aveva né padre né madre. La ragazza era avvenente e bella; e alla morte del padre e della madre, Mardocheo l’aveva adottata come figlia.

8 S o it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

Quando l’ordine del re e il suo decreto furono divulgati, e un gran numero di ragazze furono accolte nella residenza reale di Susa sotto la sorveglianza di Egai, anche Ester fu condotta nella casa del re, sotto la sorveglianza di Egai, guardiano delle donne.

9 A nd the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with her portions, and the seven maidens who were meet to be given her out of the king's house: and he removed her and her maidens to the best place of the house of the women.

10 E sther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.

11 A nd Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what would become of her.

12 N ow when the turn of every maiden was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that it had been done to her according to the law for the women twelve months (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors and with the things for the purifying of the women),

13 t hen in this wise came the maiden unto the king: whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.

14 I n the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.

Ci andava la sera, e la mattina dopo passava nella seconda casa delle donne, sotto la sorveglianza di Saasgaz, eunuco del re, guardiano delle concubine. Lei non tornava più dal re, a meno che il re la desiderasse e la facesse chiamare personalmente.

15 N ow when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

Quando venne il turno di Ester – la figlia di Abiail, zio di Mardocheo che l’aveva adottata come figlia – di andare dal re, lei non domandò altro che quello che le fu indicato da Egai, eunuco del re, guardiano delle donne. Ester si guadagnava il favore di tutti quelli che la vedevano.

16 S o Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

Ester fu dunque condotta in presenza del re Assuero nella reggia il decimo mese, che è il mese di Tebet, il settimo anno del regno di lui.

17 A nd the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Il re amò Ester più di tutte le altre donne, e lei trovò grazia e favore agli occhi di lui più di tutte le altre vergini. Egli le pose in testa la corona reale e la fece regina al posto di Vasti.

18 T hen the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king.

Poi, per tutti i suoi prìncipi e i suoi servitori, il re fece un gran convito in onore di Ester; concesse uno sgravio alle province e fece doni con munificenza regale. Congiura contro il re sventata da Mardocheo

19 A nd when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate.

La seconda volta che si radunavano delle vergini, Mardocheo stava seduto alla porta del re.

20 E sther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.

Ester, secondo l’ordine che Mardocheo le aveva dato, non aveva detto nulla dei suoi parenti né del suo popolo; perché faceva quanto Mardocheo le diceva come quando era sotto la tutela di lui.

21 I n those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those that kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.

In quei giorni, mentre Mardocheo stava seduto alla porta del re, Bigtan e Teres, due eunuchi del re, di quelli che stavano di guardia all’ingresso, irritatisi contro il re Assuero, cercarono di attentare alla sua vita.

22 A nd the thing became known to Mordecai, who showed it unto Esther the queen; and Esther told the king thereof in Mordecai's name.

Mardocheo scoprì la cosa e ne informò la regina Ester, che a sua volta ne parlò al re in nome di Mardocheo.

23 A nd when inquisition was made of the matter, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

Dopo che furono svolte indagini e verificato il fatto, i due eunuchi furono impiccati a una forca; e il fatto fu registrato nel libro delle Cronache, in presenza del re.
