1 I f there arise in the midst of thee a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give thee a sign or a wonder,

«Quando sorgerà in mezzo a te un profeta o un sognatore che ti annuncia un segno o un prodigio,

2 a nd the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;

e il segno o il prodigio di cui ti avrà parlato si compie, ed egli ti dice: “Andiamo dietro a dèi stranieri, che tu non hai mai conosciuto, e serviamoli”,

3 t hou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams: for Jehovah your God proveth you, to know whether ye love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

tu non darai retta alle parole di quel profeta o di quel sognatore, perché il Signore, il vostro Dio, vi mette alla prova per sapere se amate il Signore, il vostro Dio, con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta l’anima vostra.

4 Y e shall walk after Jehovah your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Seguirete il Signore, il vostro Dio, lo temerete, osserverete i suoi comandamenti, ubbidirete alla sua voce, lo servirete e vi terrete stretti a lui.

5 A nd that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage, to draw thee aside out of the way which Jehovah thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

Quel profeta o quel sognatore sarà messo a morte, perché avrà predicato l’apostasia dal Signore Dio vostro che vi ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto e vi ha liberati dalla casa di schiavitù, per spingerti fuori dalla via per la quale il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti ha ordinato di camminare. Così toglierai il male di mezzo a te.

6 I f thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, that is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

«Se tuo fratello, figlio di tua madre, o tuo figlio o tua figlia o tua moglie, che riposa sul tuo seno, o l’amico, che è come un altro te stesso, vorranno ingannarti in segreto, dicendo: “Andiamo, serviamo altri dèi”, quelli che né tu né i tuoi padri avete mai conosciuto,

7 o f the gods of the peoples that are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;

dèi adorati dai popoli che vi circondano, vicini a te o da te lontani, da un’estremità all’altra della terra,

8 t hou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him:

tu non acconsentirai, non gli darai retta; l’occhio tuo non abbia pietà per lui; non risparmiarlo, non giustificarlo;

9 b ut thou shalt surely kill him; thy hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

anzi, uccidilo senz’altro; la tua mano sia la prima a levarsi su di lui, per metterlo a morte; poi venga la mano di tutto il popolo;

10 A nd thou shalt stone him to death with stones, because he hath sought to draw thee away from Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

lapidalo e muoia, perché ha cercato di spingerti lontano dal Signore tuo Dio, che vi ha fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù.

11 A nd all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do not more any such wickedness as this is in the midst of thee.

E tutto Israele lo udrà e temerà, e non commetterà più una simile azione malvagia in mezzo a te.

12 I f thou shalt hear tell concerning one of thy cities, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to dwell there, saying,

«Se a proposito di una delle città che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà per abitarle, sentirai dire:

13 C ertain base fellows are gone out from the midst of thee, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;

“Uomini perversi sono sorti in mezzo a te e hanno sedotto gli abitanti della loro città dicendo: ‘Andiamo, serviamo altri dèi, che voi non avete mai conosciuti’”,

14 t hen shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in the midst of thee,

tu farai delle ricerche, investigherai, interrogherai con cura. Se troverai che è vero, che il fatto sussiste e che una tale abominazione è stata realmente commessa in mezzo a te,

15 t hou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.

allora metterai senz’altro a fil di spada gli abitanti di quella città, la voterai allo sterminio con tutto quello che contiene, e passerai a fil di spada anche il suo bestiame.

16 A nd thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, unto Jehovah thy God: and it shall be a heap for ever; it shall not be built again.

Radunerai tutto il bottino in mezzo alla piazza e darai interamente alle fiamme la città con tutto il suo bottino, come sacrificio arso interamente per il Signore vostro Dio; essa sarà per sempre un mucchio di rovine e non sarà più ricostruita.

17 A nd there shall cleave nought of the devoted thing to thy hand; that Jehovah may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers;

Nulla di ciò che sarà così votato allo sterminio si attaccherà alle tue mani, affinché il Signore rinunci alla sua ira ardente, ti faccia misericordia, abbia pietà di te e ti moltiplichi, come giurò ai tuoi padri di fare,

18 w hen thou shalt hearken to the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah thy God.

se tu ubbidirai alla voce del Signore tuo Dio, osservando tutti i suoi comandamenti che oggi ti do, e facendo ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore tuo Dio.
