1 A nd Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.

Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni».

2 A nd Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

Balac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e Balac e Balaam offrirono un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

3 A nd Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go: peradventure Jehovah will come to meet me; and whatsoever he showeth me I will tell thee. And he went to a bare height.

E Balaam disse a Balac: «Sta’ vicino al tuo olocausto e io mi allontanerò; forse il Signore mi verrà incontro; e io riferirò quello che mi avrà fatto vedere»; e andò sopra una nuda altura.

4 A nd God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Dio venne incontro a Balaam, e Balaam gli disse: «Io ho preparato i sette altari e ho offerto un toro e un montone su ciascun altare».

5 A nd Jehovah put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.

Allora il Signore mise delle parole in bocca a Balaam e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».

6 A nd he returned unto him, and, lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab.

Balaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava vicino al suo olocausto con tutti i prìncipi di Moab.

7 A nd he took up his parable, and said, From Aram hath Balak brought me, The king of Moab from the mountains of the East: Come, curse me Jacob, And come, defy Israel.

Allora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo: «Balac mi ha fatto venire da Aram, il re di Moab mi ha chiamato dalle montagne d’Oriente. Vieni, disse, maledici Giacobbe per me! Vieni, impreca contro Israele!

8 H ow shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? And how shall I defy, whom Jehovah hath not defied?

Come farò a maledirlo se Dio non l’ha maledetto? Come farò a imprecare se il Signore non ha imprecato?

9 F or from the top of the rocks I see him, And from the hills I behold him: lo, it is a people that dwelleth alone, And shall not be reckoned among the nations.

Io lo guardo dalla sommità delle rupi e lo contemplo dall’alto dei colli; ecco, è un popolo che dimora solo e non è contato nel numero delle nazioni.

10 W ho can count the dust of Jacob, Or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, And let my last end be like his!

Chi può contare la polvere di Giacobbe o calcolare il quarto d’Israele? Possa io morire della morte dei giusti e possa la mia fine essere simile alla loro!»

11 A nd Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.

Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Che mi hai fatto? Ti ho preso per maledire i miei nemici ed ecco, non hai fatto che benedirli».

12 A nd he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which Jehovah putteth in my mouth?

L’altro gli rispose e disse: «Non devo forse stare attento a dire soltanto ciò che il Signore mi mette in bocca?»

13 A nd Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them; thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.

E Balac gli disse: «Ti prego, vieni con me in un altro luogo, da dove tu lo potrai vedere; tu di qui non ne puoi vedere che una parte; non lo puoi vedere tutto quanto; di là me lo maledirai».

14 A nd he took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.

E lo condusse al campo di Sofim, sulla cima del Pisga; costruì sette altari e offrì un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

15 A nd he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I meet Jehovah yonder.

E Balaam disse a Balac: «Stattene qui vicino al tuo olocausto, e io andrò a incontrare il Signore ».

16 A nd Jehovah met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus shalt thou speak.

E il Signore venne incontro a Balaam, gli mise delle parole in bocca e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».

17 A nd he came to him, and, lo, he was standing by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath Jehovah spoken?

Balaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava presso il suo olocausto, con i prìncipi di Moab. E Balac gli disse: «Che ha detto il Signore ?»

18 A nd he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; Hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:

Allora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Àlzati, Balac, e ascolta! Porgimi orecchio, figlio di Sippor!

19 G od is not a man, that he should lie, Neither the son of man, that he should repent: Hath he said, and will he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and will he not make it good?

Dio non è un uomo, da poter mentire, né un figlio d’uomo, da doversi pentire. Quando ha detto una cosa non la farà? O quando ha parlato non manterrà la parola?

20 B ehold, I have received commandment to bless: And he hath blessed, and I cannot reverse it.

Ecco, ho ricevuto l’ordine di benedire; egli ha benedetto; io non posso contraddire.

21 H e hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob; Neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: Jehovah his God is with him, And the shout of a king is among them.

Egli non scorge iniquità in Giacobbe, non vede perversità in Israele. Il Signore, il suo Dio, è con lui e Israele lo acclama come suo re.

22 G od bringeth them forth out of Egypt; He hath as it were the strength of the wild-ox.

Dio lo ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto e gli dà il vigore del bufalo.

23 S urely there is no enchantment with Jacob; Neither is there any divination with Israel: Now shalt it be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

In Giacobbe non c’è magia, in Israele non c’è divinazione; a suo tempo viene detto a Giacobbe e a Israele qual è l’opera che Dio compie.

24 B ehold, the people riseth up as a lioness, And as a lion doth he lift himself up: He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, And drink the blood of the slain.

Ecco un popolo che si leva come una leonessa e si alza come un leone; egli non si sdraia prima di aver divorato la preda e bevuto il sangue delle sue vittime».

25 A nd Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.

Allora Balac disse a Balaam: «Non lo maledire, ma almeno non benedire».

26 B ut Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that Jehovah speaketh, that I must do?

Ma Balaam rispose e disse a Balac: «Non ti ho forse detto: “Io farò tutto quello che il Signore dirà”?»

27 A nd Balak said unto Balaam, Come now, I will take thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.

Balac disse a Balaam: «Ti prego, vieni, io ti condurrò in un altro luogo; forse piacerà a Dio che tu me lo maledica di là».

28 A nd Balak took Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh down upon the desert.

Balac dunque condusse Balaam in cima al Peor, che domina il deserto.

29 A nd Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.

E Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni».

30 A nd Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.
