1 A nd it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard thereof, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

Quando Iabin, re di Asor, ebbe udito queste cose, mandò dei messaggeri a Iobab re di Madon, al re di Simrom, al re di Acsaf,

2 a nd to the kings that were on the north, in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,

ai re che erano al nord nella regione montuosa, nella pianura al sud di Chinneret, nella regione bassa, e sulle alture di Dor a occidente,

3 t o the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill-country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

ai Cananei d’oriente e di occidente, agli Amorei, agli Ittiti, ai Ferezei, ai Gebusei nella regione montuosa, agli Ivvei ai piedi dell’Ermon nel paese di Mispa.

4 A nd they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

E quelli uscirono con tutti i loro eserciti, formando un popolo innumerevole come la sabbia che è sulla riva del mare, e con cavalli e carri in grandissima quantità.

5 A nd all these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.

Tutti questi re si riunirono e vennero ad accamparsi insieme presso le acque di Merom per combattere contro Israele.

6 A nd Jehovah said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hock their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

Il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Non li temere, perché domani a quest’ora io farò in modo che siano tutti uccisi davanti a Israele; tu taglierai i garretti ai loro cavalli e darai fuoco ai loro carri».

7 S o Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell upon them.

Giosuè dunque, con tutta la sua gente di guerra, marciò all’improvviso contro di essi alle acque di Merom e piombò loro addosso.

8 A nd Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them, and chased them unto great Sidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

Il Signore li diede nelle mani degl’Israeliti, i quali li batterono e li inseguirono fino a Sidone la Grande, fino a Misrefot-Maim e fino alla valle di Mispa, verso oriente; li batterono senza lasciarne scampare nessuno.

9 A nd Joshua did unto them as Jehovah bade him: he hocked their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

E Giosuè li trattò come gli aveva detto il Signore; tagliò i garretti ai loro cavalli e diede fuoco ai loro carri. Conquista nel nord

10 A nd Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

Al suo ritorno, e in quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè prese Asor e ne fece perire di spada il re; poiché Asor era stata nel passato la capitale di tutti quei regni.

11 A nd they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left that breathed: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

Mise anche a fil di spada tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, votandole allo sterminio; non vi restò anima viva, e diede Asor alle fiamme.

12 A nd all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and he smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded.

Giosuè prese pure tutte le città di quei re e tutti i loro re, li mise a fil di spada e li votò allo sterminio, come aveva ordinato Mosè, servo del Signore.

13 B ut as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

Ma Israele non incendiò nessuna delle città poste in collina, salvo Asor, la sola che Giosuè incendiò.

14 A nd all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any that breathed.

I figli d’Israele tennero per sé tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame, ma misero a fil di spada tutti gli uomini fino al loro totale sterminio, senza lasciare anima viva.

15 A s Jehovah commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua: and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that Jehovah commanded Moses.

Come il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè suo servo, così Mosè ordinò a Giosuè, e così fece Giosuè, il quale non trascurò nessuno degli ordini che il Signore aveva dati a Mosè.

16 S o Joshua took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the Arabah, and the hill-country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;

Giosuè prese dunque tutto quel paese, la regione montuosa, tutta la regione meridionale, tutta la terra di Goscen, la regione bassa, la pianura, la regione montuosa d’Israele e le sue regioni basse,

17 f rom mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.

dalla montagna brulla che si eleva verso Seir, fino a Baal-Gad nella valle del Libano ai piedi del monte Ermon; prese tutti i loro re, li colpì e li mise a morte.

18 J oshua made war a long time with all those kings.

Giosuè fece per lungo tempo guerra a tutti quei re.

19 T here was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: they took all in battle.

Non ci fu città che facesse pace con i figli d’Israele, eccetto gli Ivvei che abitavano a Gabaon; le presero tutte, combattendo;

20 F or it was of Jehovah to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

infatti il Signore faceva sì che il loro cuore si ostinasse a dar battaglia a Israele, perché Israele li votasse allo sterminio senza che ci fosse pietà per loro, e li distruggesse come il Signore aveva comandato a Mosè.

21 A nd Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

In quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè si mise in marcia e sterminò gli Anachiti della regione montuosa, di Ebron, di Debir, di Anab, di tutta la regione montuosa di Giuda e di tutta la regione montuosa d’Israele; Giosuè li votò allo sterminio con le loro città.

22 T here was none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.

Non rimasero più Anachiti nel paese dei figli d’Israele; non ne restarono che alcuni in Gaza, in Gat e in Asdod.

23 S o Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Jehovah spake unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war.

Giosuè dunque prese tutto il paese, esattamente come il Signore aveva detto a Mosè; e Giosuè lo diede in eredità a Israele, tribù per tribù, secondo la parte che toccava a ciascuna. E nel paese cessò la guerra.
