1 A nd it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chislev.

Il quarto anno del re Dario la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Zaccaria, il quarto giorno del nono mese, cioè di Chisleu.

2 N ow they of Beth-el had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to entreat the favor of Jehovah,

Quelli di Betel avevano mandato Sareser e Reghem-Melec con la loro gente per implorare il favore del Signore,

3 a nd to speak unto the priests of the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

e per parlare ai sacerdoti della casa del Signore degli eserciti e ai profeti in questo modo: «Dobbiamo continuare a piangere il quinto mese e a digiunare come abbiamo fatto per tanti anni?»

4 T hen came the word of Jehovah of hosts unto me, saying,

La parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

5 S peak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh month, even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

«Parla a tutto il popolo del paese e ai sacerdoti, e di’: “Quando avete digiunato e fatto cordoglio il quinto e il settimo mese durante questi settant’anni, avete forse digiunato per me, proprio per me?

6 A nd when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

Quando mangiate e quando bevete, non siete voi che mangiate e voi che bevete?

7 S hould ye not hear the words which Jehovah cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?

Non dovreste forse dare ascolto alle parole che il Signore degli eserciti ha proclamate, mediante i profeti del passato, quando Gerusalemme era abitata e tranquilla, con le sue città circostanti, ed erano pure abitate la regione meridionale e la pianura?”».

8 A nd the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah, saying,

La parola del Signore fu rivolta a Zaccaria in questi termini:

9 T hus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;

«Così parlava il Signore degli eserciti: “Fate giustizia fedelmente, mostrate l’uno per l’altro bontà e compassione.

10 a nd oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.

Non opprimete la vedova né l’orfano, lo straniero né il povero; nessuno di voi, nel suo cuore, trami il male contro il fratello”.

11 B ut they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

Ma essi rifiutarono di fare attenzione, opposero una spalla ribelle e si tapparono gli orecchi per non udire.

12 Y ea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which Jehovah of hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets: therefore there came great wrath from Jehovah of hosts.

Resero il loro cuore duro come il diamante, per non ascoltare la legge e le parole che il Signore degli eserciti rivolgeva loro per mezzo del suo Spirito, per mezzo dei profeti del passato; perciò ci fu grande indignazione da parte del Signore degli eserciti.

13 A nd it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts;

“Così come egli chiamava, e quelli non davano ascolto, così quelli chiameranno, e io non darò ascolto”, dice il Signore degli eserciti.

14 b ut I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

“Li disperderò fra tutte le nazioni che essi non hanno mai conosciute, e il paese rimarrà desolato dietro a loro, senza più nessuno che vi passi o vi ritorni. Essi hanno ridotto il paese di delizie in desolazione”».
