1 H earken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek Jehovah: look unto the rock whence ye were hewn, and to the hold of the pit whence ye were digged.

«Ascoltatemi, voi che perseguite la giustizia, che cercate il Signore! Considerate la roccia da cui foste tagliati, la buca della cava da cui foste cavati.

2 L ook unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him, and made him many.

Considerate Abraamo vostro padre e Sara che vi partorì; poiché io lo chiamai, quando egli era solo, lo benedissi e lo moltiplicai.

3 F or Jehovah hath comforted Zion; he hath comforted all her waste places, and hath made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Jehovah; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Così il Signore sta per consolare Sion, consolerà tutte le sue rovine; renderà il suo deserto pari a un Eden, la sua solitudine pari a un giardino del Signore. Gioia ed esultanza si troveranno in mezzo a lei, inni di lode e melodia di canti.

4 A ttend unto me, O my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall go forth from me, and I will establish my justice for a light of the peoples.

Prestami attenzione, popolo mio! Porgimi orecchio, mia nazione! Poiché la legge procederà da me e io porrò il mio diritto come luce dei popoli.

5 M y righteousness is near, my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the peoples; the isles shall wait for me, and on mine arm shall they trust.

La mia giustizia è vicina, la mia salvezza sta per apparire, le mie braccia giudicheranno i popoli; le isole spereranno in me, confideranno nel mio braccio.

6 L ift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment; and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

Alzate i vostri occhi al cielo e abbassateli sulla terra! I cieli infatti si dilegueranno come fumo, la terra invecchierà come un vestito; anche i suoi abitanti moriranno; ma la mia salvezza durerà in eterno, la mia giustizia non verrà mai meno.

7 H earken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye dismayed at their revilings.

Ascoltatemi, voi che conoscete la giustizia, popolo che hai nel cuore la mia legge! Non temete gli insulti degli uomini, né siate sgomenti per i loro oltraggi.

8 F or the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool; but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation unto all generations.

Infatti la tignola li divorerà come un vestito, la tarma li roderà come la lana; ma la mia giustizia rimarrà in eterno, la mia salvezza per ogni epoca».

9 A wake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Is it not thou that didst cut Rahab in pieces, that didst pierce the monster?

Risvègliati, risvègliati, rivèstiti di forza, braccio del Signore! Risvègliati come nei giorni di una volta, come nelle antiche età! Non sei tu che facesti a pezzi Raab, che trafiggesti il dragone?

10 I s it not thou that driedst up the sea, the waters of the great deep; that madest the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over?

Non sei tu che prosciugasti il mare, le acque del grande abisso, che facesti delle profondità del mare una via per il passaggio dei redenti?

11 A nd the ransomed of Jehovah shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

I riscattati del Signore torneranno, verranno con canti di gioia a Sion; letizia eterna coronerà il loro capo, otterranno felicità e gioia; il dolore e il gemito fuggiranno.

12 I , even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou art afraid of man that shall die, and of the son of man that shall be made as grass;

«Io, io sono colui che vi consola; chi sei tu che temi l’uomo che deve morire, il figlio dell’uomo che passerà come l’erba?

13 a nd hast forgotten Jehovah thy Maker, that stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and fearest continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, when he maketh ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

Hai dimenticato il Signore che ti ha fatto, che ha disteso i cieli e fondato la terra? Tu tremi continuamente, tutto il giorno, davanti al furore dell’oppressore, quando si prepara a distruggere. Ma dov’è il furore dell’oppressore?

14 T he captive exile shall speedily be loosed; and he shall not die and go down into the pit, neither shall his bread fail.

Colui che è curvo nei ceppi sarà presto liberato: non morirà nella fossa, non gli mancherà il pane.

15 F or I am Jehovah thy God, who stirreth up the sea, so that the waves thereof roar: Jehovah of hosts is his name.

Io infatti sono il Signore, il tuo Dio; io sollevo il mare e ne faccio muggire le onde. Il mio nome è il Signore degli eserciti.

16 A nd I have put my words in thy mouth, and have covered thee in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

Io ho messo le mie parole nella tua bocca e ti ho coperto con l’ombra della mia mano per spiegare nuovi cieli e fondare una nuova terra, per dire a Sion: “Tu sei il mio popolo”».

17 A wake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, that hast drunk at the hand of Jehovah the cup of his wrath; thou hast drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it.

Risvègliati, risvègliati, àlzati, Gerusalemme, che hai bevuto dalla mano del Signore il calice, la coppa di stordimento, e l’hai succhiata sino in fondo!

18 T here is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand among all the sons that she hath brought up.

Fra tutti i figli da lei partoriti non c’è nessuno che la guidi; fra tutti i figli da lei allevati non c’è nessuno che la prenda per mano.

19 T hese two things are befallen thee, who shall bemoan thee? desolation and destruction, and the famine and the sword; how shall I comfort thee?

Queste due cose ti sono avvenute; chi ti compiangerà? Desolazione e rovina, fame e spada; chi ti consolerà ?

20 T hy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as an antelope in a net; they are full of the wrath of Jehovah, the rebuke of thy God.

I tuoi figli venivano meno, gettati a ogni angolo di strada, come un’antilope nella rete, prostrati dal furore del Signore, dalle minacce del tuo Dio.

21 T herefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but now with wine:

Perciò ascolta ora questo, o infelice e ubriaca, ma non di vino!

22 T hus saith thy Lord Jehovah, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thy hand the cup of staggering, even the bowl of the cup of my wrath; thou shalt no more drink it again:

Così parla il tuo Signore, il Signore, il tuo Dio, che difende la causa del suo popolo: «Io ti tolgo di mano la coppa di stordimento, il calice, la coppa del mio furore; tu non la berrai più!

23 a nd I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee, that have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over; and thou hast laid thy back as the ground, and as the street, to them that go over.

Io la metterò in mano ai tuoi persecutori, che ti dicevano: “Chìnati, ché ti passiamo addosso!” Tu facevi del tuo dorso un suolo, una strada per i passanti!»
