1 M y son, forget not my law; But let thy heart keep my commandments:

2 F or length of days, and years of life, And peace, will they add to thee.

perché ti procureranno lunghi giorni, anni di vita e di prosperità.

3 L et not kindness and truth forsake thee: Bind them about thy neck; Write them upon the tablet of thy heart:

Bontà e verità non ti abbandonino: legatele al collo, scrivile sulla tavola del tuo cuore;

4 S o shalt thou find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man.

troverai così grazia e buon senso agli occhi di Dio e degli uomini.

5 T rust in Jehovah with all thy heart, And lean not upon thine own understanding:

Confida nel Signore con tutto il cuore e non ti appoggiare sul tuo discernimento.

6 I n all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths.

Riconoscilo in tutte le tue vie ed egli appianerà i tuoi sentieri.

7 B e not wise in thine own eyes; Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:

Non ti stimare saggio da te stesso, temi il Signore e allontanati dal male;

8 I t will be health to thy navel, And marrow to thy bones.

questo sarà la salute del tuo corpo e un refrigerio alle tue ossa.

9 H onor Jehovah with thy substance, And with the first-fruits of all thine increase:

Onora il Signore con i tuoi beni e con le primizie di ogni tua rendita;

10 S o shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy vats shall overflow with new wine.

i tuoi granai saranno ricolmi d’abbondanza e i tuoi tini traboccheranno di mosto.

11 M y son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah; Neither be weary of his reproof:

Figlio mio, non disprezzare la correzione del Signore e non ti ripugni la sua riprensione,

12 F or whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth; Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

perché il Signore riprende colui che egli ama, come un padre il figlio che gradisce.

13 H appy is the man that findeth wisdom, And the man that getteth understanding.

Beato l’uomo che ha trovato la saggezza, l’uomo che ottiene l’intelligenza!

14 F or the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver, And the profit thereof than fine gold.

Poiché il guadagno che essa procura è migliore di quello dell’argento, il profitto che se ne trae vale più dell’oro fino.

15 S he is more precious than rubies: And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her.

Essa è più pregevole delle perle, quanto hai di più prezioso non la equivale.

16 L ength of days is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.

Lunghezza di vita è nella sua destra; ricchezza e gloria nella sua sinistra.

17 H er ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.

Le sue vie sono vie deliziose, e tutti i suoi sentieri sono pace.

18 S he is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: And happy is every one that retaineth her.

Essa è un albero di vita per quelli che l’afferrano, e chi la possiede è beato.

19 J ehovah by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding he established the heavens.

Con la saggezza il Signore fondò la terra, e con l’intelligenza rese stabili i cieli.

20 B y his knowledge the depths were broken up, And the skies drop down the dew.

Per la sua scienza gli abissi furono aperti, e le nuvole distillano la rugiada.

21 M y son, let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

Figlio mio, queste cose non si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi! Conserva la saggezza e la riflessione!

22 S o shall they be life unto thy soul, And grace to thy neck.

Esse saranno vita per l’anima tua e un ornamento al tuo collo.

23 T hen shalt thou walk in thy way securely, And thy foot shall not stumble.

Allora camminerai sicuro per la tua via e il tuo piede non inciamperà.

24 W hen thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Quando ti coricherai non avrai paura; starai a letto e il tuo sonno sarà dolce.

25 B e not afraid of sudden fear, Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh:

Non avrai da temere lo spavento improvviso, né la rovina degli empi, quando verrà,

26 F or Jehovah will be thy confidence, And will keep thy foot from being taken.

perché il Signore sarà la tua sicurezza e preserverà il tuo piede da ogni insidia.

27 W ithhold not good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the power of thy hand to do it.

Non rifiutare un beneficio a chi vi ha diritto, quando è in tuo potere di farlo.

28 S ay not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, And to-morrow I will give; When thou hast it by thee.

Non dire al tuo prossimo: «Va’ e torna, te lo darò domani», quando hai la cosa con te.

29 D evise not evil against thy neighbor, Seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

Non tramare il male contro il tuo prossimo, mentre egli abita fiducioso con te.

30 S trive not with a man without cause, If he have done thee no harm.

Non fare causa a nessuno senza motivo, se non ti è stato fatto alcun torto.

31 E nvy thou not the man of violence, And choose none of his ways.

Non portare invidia all’uomo violento e non scegliere nessuna delle sue vie,

32 F or the perverse is an abomination to Jehovah; But his friendship is with the upright.

poiché il Signore ha in abominio l’uomo perverso, ma la sua amicizia è per gli uomini retti.

33 T he curse of Jehovah is in the house of the wicked; But he blesseth the habitation of the righteous.

La maledizione del Signore è nella casa dell’empio, ma egli benedice l’abitazione dei giusti.

34 S urely he scoffeth at the scoffers; But he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Se schernisce gli schernitori, fa grazia agli umili.

35 T he wise shall inherit glory; But shame shall be the promotion of fools.

I saggi erediteranno la gloria, ma l’infamia è la parte che spetta agli stolti.
