1 A nd Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Naomi, sua suocera, le disse: «Figlia mia, io devo assicurarti una sistemazione perché tu sia felice.

2 A nd now is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.

Boaz, con le cui serve sei stata, non è forse nostro parente? Ecco, stasera deve ventilare l’orzo nell’aia.

3 W ash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor, but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

Làvati dunque, profumati, indossa il tuo mantello e scendi all’aia; ma non farti riconoscere da lui prima che egli abbia finito di mangiare e di bere.

4 A nd it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

E quando se ne andrà a dormire, osserva il luogo dov’egli dorme; poi va’, alzagli la coperta dalla parte dei piedi, e còricati lì; e lui ti dirà quello che tu debba fare».

5 A nd she said unto her, All that thou sayest I will do.

Rut le rispose: «Farò tutto quello che dici».

6 A nd she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.

Scese all’aia, e fece tutto quello che la suocera le aveva ordinato.

7 A nd when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

Boaz mangiò e bevve e, con il cuore allegro, se ne andò a dormire all’estremità del mucchio di covoni. Allora lei venne pian piano, gli alzò la coperta dalla parte dei piedi e si coricò.

8 A nd it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

Verso mezzanotte, quell’uomo si svegliò di soprassalto, si voltò, ed ecco una donna era coricata ai suoi piedi.

9 A nd he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

«Chi sei?» le chiese. E lei rispose: «Sono Rut, tua serva; stendi il lembo del tuo mantello sulla tua serva, perché tu hai il diritto di riscatto».

10 A nd he said, Blessed be thou of Jehovah, my daughter: thou hast showed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

Ed egli a lei: «Sii benedetta dal Signore, figlia mia! La tua bontà d’adesso supera quella di prima, poiché non sei andata dietro a dei giovani, poveri o ricchi.

11 A nd now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a worthy woman.

Non temere, dunque, figlia mia; io farò per te tutto quello che dici, perché tutti qui sanno che sei una donna virtuosa.

12 A nd now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

È vero che io ho il diritto di riscatto, ma ce n’è un altro che ti è parente più prossimo di me.

13 T arry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as Jehovah liveth: lie down until the morning.

Passa qui la notte; e domattina, se quello vorrà far valere il suo diritto su di te, va bene, lo faccia pure; ma se non gli piacerà di far valere il suo diritto, io farò valere il mio, com’è vero che il Signore vive! Sta coricata fino al mattino».

14 A nd she lay at his feet until the morning. And she rose up before one could discern another. For he said, Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.

Lei rimase coricata ai suoi piedi fino alla mattina; poi si alzò, prima che un uomo potesse riconoscere il suo vicino; poiché Boaz diceva: «Nessuno sappia che questa donna è venuta nell’aia!»

15 A nd he said, Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it; and she held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and he went into the city.

Poi aggiunse: «Porta qua il mantello che hai addosso e reggilo». Lei lo resse ed egli vi misurò dentro sei misure d’orzo, e glielo mise sulle spalle. Poi se ne andò in città.

16 A nd when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

Rut tornò da sua suocera, che le disse: «Sei tu, figlia mia?» E lei le raccontò tutto ciò che quell’uomo aveva fatto per lei

17 A nd she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law.

e aggiunse: «Mi ha dato anche queste sei misure d’orzo; perché mi ha detto: “Non devi tornare da tua suocera a mani vuote”».

18 T hen said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall; for the man will not rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

E Naomi disse: «Rimani qui, figlia mia, finché tu veda come l’affare finirà; poiché quest’uomo non si darà posa, finché non abbia oggi stesso terminato quest’affare».
