1 Y ea, at this my heart trembleth, And is moved out of its place.

«A tale spettacolo il mio cuore trema e balza fuori dal suo posto.

2 H ear, oh, hear the noise of his voice, And the sound that goeth out of his mouth.

Udite, udite il fragore della sua voce, il rombo che esce dalla sua bocca!

3 H e sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, And his lightening unto the ends of the earth.

Egli lo lancia sotto tutti i cieli e il suo lampo guizza fino alle estremità della terra.

4 A fter it a voice roareth; He thundereth with the voice of his majesty; And he restraineth not the lightnings when his voice is heard.

Dopo il lampo, una voce rugge; egli tuona con la sua voce maestosa; quando si ode la voce, il fulmine non è già più nella sua mano.

5 G od thundereth marvellously with his voice; Great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

Dio tuona con la sua voce in modo prodigioso; grandi cose egli fa che noi non comprendiamo.

6 F or he saith to the snow, Fall thou on the earth; Likewise to the shower of rain, And to the showers of his mighty rain.

Dice alla neve: “Cadi sulla terra!” Lo dice alla pioggia, alla pioggia torrenziale.

7 H e sealeth up the hand of every man, That all men whom he hath made may know it.

Rende inerte ogni mano d’uomo, perché tutti i mortali, che sono opera sua, imparino a conoscerlo.

8 T hen the beasts go into coverts, And remain in their dens.

Le bestie selvagge vanno nel covo e stanno accovacciate entro le tane.

9 O ut of the chamber of the south cometh the storm, And cold out of the north.

Dal sud viene l’uragano, il freddo viene dal nord.

10 B y the breath of God ice is given; And the breadth of the waters is straitened.

Al soffio di Dio si forma il ghiaccio e si contrae la distesa delle acque.

11 Y ea, he ladeth the thick cloud with moisture; He spreadeth abroad the cloud of his lightning:

Egli carica pure le nubi di umidità, disperde lontano le nuvole che portano i suoi lampi

12 A nd it is turned round about by his guidance, That they may do whatsoever he commandeth them Upon the face of the habitable world,

ed esse, da lui guidate, vagano nei loro giri per eseguire i suoi comandi sopra la faccia di tutta la terra;

13 W hether it be for correction, or for his land, Or for lovingkindness, that he cause it to come.

e le manda come flagello, oppure come beneficio alla sua terra, o come prova della sua bontà.

14 H earken unto this, O Job: Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

«Porgi l’orecchio a questo, Giobbe; fèrmati e considera le meraviglie di Dio!

15 D ost thou know how God layeth his charge upon them, And causeth the lightning of his cloud to shine?

Sai tu come Dio le diriga e faccia guizzare il lampo dalle sue nubi?

16 D ost thou know the balancings of the clouds, The wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?

Conosci tu l’equilibrio delle nuvole, le meraviglie di colui la cui scienza è perfetta?

17 H ow thy garments are warm, When the earth is still by reason of the south wind?

Sai come mai i tuoi abiti sono caldi quando la terra si assopisce sotto il soffio dello scirocco?

18 C anst thou with him spread out the sky, Which is strong as a molten mirror?

Puoi tu, come lui, distendere i cieli e farli solidi come uno specchio di metallo?

19 T each us what we shall say unto him; For we cannot set our speech in order by reason of darkness.

Insegnaci tu che cosa dirgli! Nelle nostre tenebre, noi siamo senza parole.

20 S hall it be told him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?

Gli si annuncerà forse che io voglio parlare? Ma chi mai può desiderare di essere inghiottito?

21 A nd now men see not the light which is bright in the skies; But the wind passeth, and cleareth them.

Nessuno può fissare il sole che sfolgora nel cielo, quando c’è passato il vento a renderlo limpido.

22 O ut of the north cometh golden splendor: God hath upon him terrible majesty.

Dal settentrione viene l’oro; Dio è circondato da una maestà terribile;

23 T ouching the Almighty, we cannot find him out He is excellent in power; And in justice and plenteous righteousness he will not afflict.

l’Onnipotente noi non lo possiamo scoprire. Egli è grande in forza, in equità, in perfetta giustizia; egli non opprime nessuno.

24 M en do therefore fear him: He regardeth not any that are wise of heart.

Perciò gli uomini lo temono; egli non degna d’uno sguardo chi si crede saggio».
