1 A nd God spake all these words, saying,

Allora Dio pronunciò tutte queste parole:

2 I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

«Io sono il Signore, il tuo Dio, che ti ho fatto uscire dal paese d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù.

3 T hou shalt have no other gods before me.

Non avere altri dèi oltre a me.

4 T hou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Non farti scultura, né immagine alcuna delle cose che sono lassù nel cielo o quaggiù sulla terra o nelle acque sotto la terra.

5 T hou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,

Non ti prostrare davanti a loro e non li servire, perché io, il Signore, il tuo Dio, sono un Dio geloso; punisco l’iniquità dei padri sui figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione di quelli che mi odiano,

6 a nd showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

e uso bontà, fino alla millesima generazione, verso quelli che mi amano e osservano i miei comandamenti.

7 T hou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Non pronunciare il nome del Signore, Dio tuo, invano; perché il Signore non riterrà innocente chi pronuncia il suo nome invano.

8 R emember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Ricòrdati del giorno del riposo per santificarlo.

9 S ix days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

Lavora sei giorni e fa’ tutto il tuo lavoro,

10 b ut the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

ma il settimo è giorno di riposo, consacrato al Signore Dio tuo; non fare in esso nessun lavoro ordinario, né tu, né tuo figlio, né tua figlia, né il tuo servo, né la tua serva, né il tuo bestiame, né lo straniero che abita nella tua città;

11 f or in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

poiché in sei giorni il Signore fece i cieli, la terra, il mare e tutto ciò che è in essi, e si riposò il settimo giorno; perciò il Signore ha benedetto il giorno del riposo e lo ha santificato.

12 H onor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

Onora tuo padre e tua madre, affinché i tuoi giorni siano prolungati sulla terra che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà.

13 T hou shalt not kill.

Non uccidere.

14 T hou shalt not commit adultery.

Non commettere adulterio.

15 T hou shalt not steal.

Non rubare.

16 T hou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Non attestare il falso contro il tuo prossimo.

17 T hou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

Non concupire la casa del tuo prossimo; non concupire la moglie del tuo prossimo, né il suo servo, né la sua serva, né il suo bue, né il suo asino, né cosa alcuna del tuo prossimo».

18 A nd all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off.

Or tutto il popolo udiva i tuoni, il suono della tromba e vedeva i lampi e il monte fumante. A tal vista, tremava e stava lontano.

19 A nd they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

E disse a Mosè: «Parla tu con noi e noi ti ascolteremo; ma non ci parli Dio, altrimenti moriremo».

20 A nd Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not.

Mosè disse al popolo: «Non temete, Dio è venuto per mettervi alla prova, perché ci sia in voi timore di Dio, e così non pecchiate».

21 A nd the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

Il popolo dunque se ne stava lontano, ma Mosè si avvicinò alla nuvola dov’era Dio.

22 A nd Jehovah said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Parlerai così ai figli d’Israele: “Voi stessi avete visto che io vi ho parlato dai cieli.

23 Y e shall not make other gods with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you.

Non fatevi altri dèi accanto a me; non vi fate dèi d’argento, né dèi d’oro.

24 A n altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in every place where I record my name I will come unto thee and I will bless thee.

Fammi un altare di terra, e su questo offri i tuoi olocausti, i tuoi sacrifici di ringraziamento, le tue pecore e i tuoi buoi; in qualunque luogo nel quale farò ricordare il mio nome, io verrò da te e ti benedirò.

25 A nd if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

Se mi fai un altare di pietra, non costruirlo di pietre tagliate; perché alzando su di esse lo scalpello, tu le contamineresti.

26 N either shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered thereon.

E non salire al mio altare per dei gradini, affinché la tua nudità non si scopra su di esso”.
