1 I f one be found slain in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath smitten him;

«Quando nella terra di cui il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà il possesso, si troverà un uomo ucciso, disteso in un campo, senza che si sappia chi lo ha ucciso,

2 t hen thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain:

i tuoi anziani e i tuoi giudici usciranno e misureranno la distanza fra l’ucciso e le città dei dintorni.

3 a nd it shall be, that the city which is nearest unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke;

Poi gli anziani della città più vicina all’ucciso prenderanno una giovenca, che non abbia ancora lavorato né portato il giogo;

4 a nd the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley.

e gli anziani di quella città faranno scendere la giovenca presso un corso d’acqua perenne, in un luogo dove non si lavora, non si semina, e là, nel corso d’acqua, troncheranno il collo alla giovenca.

5 A nd the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them Jehovah thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of Jehovah; and according to their word shall every controversy and every stroke be.

I sacerdoti, figli di Levi, si avvicineranno poiché il Signore, il tuo Dio, li ha scelti per servirlo, per dare la benedizione nel nome del Signore, e la loro parola deve decidere ogni controversia e ogni caso di lesione.

6 A nd all the elders of that city, who are nearest unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley;

Allora tutti gli anziani di quella città che sono i più vicini all’ucciso si laveranno le mani sulla giovenca a cui sarà stato troncato il collo nel corso d’acqua;

7 a nd they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.

e, prendendo la parola, diranno: “Le nostre mani non hanno sparso questo sangue e i nostri occhi non lo hanno visto spargere.

8 F orgive, O Jehovah, thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and suffer not innocent blood to remain in the midst of thy people Israel. And the blood shall be forgiven them.

Signore, perdona il tuo popolo, Israele, che tu hai riscattato, e non rendere responsabile il tuo popolo, Israele, dello spargimento del sangue innocente”. Così quel sangue sparso sarà loro perdonato.

9 S o shalt thou put away the innocent blood from the midst of thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah.

In questo modo toglierai via di mezzo a te la colpa del sangue innocente, perché avrai fatto ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore. Le donne prigioniere di guerra

10 W hen thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and Jehovah thy God delivereth them into thy hands, and thou carriest them away captive,

«Quando andrai alla guerra contro i tuoi nemici e il Signore, il tuo Dio, li avrà messi nelle tue mani e tu avrai fatto dei prigionieri,

11 a nd seest among the captives a beautiful woman, and thou hast a desire unto her, and wouldest take her to thee to wife;

se vedrai tra i prigionieri una donna bella d’aspetto, se ne sarai attratto e vorrai prendertela per moglie, la condurrai in casa tua;

12 t hen thou shalt bring her home to thy house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;

lei si raderà il capo, si taglierà le unghie,

13 a nd she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thy house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.

si toglierà il vestito che portava quando fu presa, dimorerà in casa tua e piangerà suo padre e sua madre per un mese intero; poi entrerai da lei e tu sarai suo marito e lei tua moglie.

14 A nd it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not deal with her as a slave, because thou hast humbled her.

Se poi non ti piace più, la lascerai andare dove vorrà, ma non la potrai in alcun modo vendere per denaro né trattare da schiava, perché l’hai umiliata.

15 I f a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the first-born son be hers that was hated;

Se un uomo ha due mogli, l’una amata e l’altra odiata, e tanto l’amata quanto l’odiata gli danno dei figli, se il primogenito è figlio dell’odiata,

16 t hen it shall be, in the day that he causeth his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved the first-born before the son of the hated, who is the first-born:

quando egli dividerà tra i suoi figli i beni che possiede, non potrà fare primogenito il figlio dell’amata, preferendolo al figlio dell’odiata, che è il primogenito;

17 b ut he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the first-born is his.

ma riconoscerà come primogenito il figlio dell’odiata, dandogli una parte doppia di tutto quello che possiede; poiché egli è la primizia del suo vigore e a lui appartiene il diritto di primogenitura. I figli ribelli

18 I f a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and, though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them;

«Se un uomo ha un figlio caparbio e ribelle, che non ubbidisce alla voce di suo padre né di sua madre e che non dà loro retta neppure dopo che l’hanno castigato,

19 t hen shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

suo padre e sua madre lo prenderanno e lo condurranno dagli anziani della sua città, alla porta della località dove abita,

20 a nd they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

e diranno agli anziani della sua città: “Questo nostro figlio è caparbio e ribelle; non vuole ubbidire alla nostra voce, è senza freno e ubriacone”;

21 A nd all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

allora tutti gli uomini della sua città lo lapideranno a morte. Così toglierai via di mezzo a te il male, e tutto Israele lo saprà e temerà. I cadaveri degli impiccati

22 A nd if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree;

«Quando uno avrà commesso un delitto passibile di morte, e viene messo a morte, lo appenderai a un albero.

23 h is body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt surely bury him the same day; for he that is hanged is accursed of God; that thou defile not thy land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Il suo cadavere non rimarrà tutta la notte sull’albero, ma lo seppellirai senza indugio lo stesso giorno, perché il cadavere appeso è maledetto da Dio, e tu non contaminerai la terra che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà come eredità.
