1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

«Io avevo stretto un patto con i miei occhi; io non avrei fissato lo sguardo sopra una vergine.

2 F or what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

Che parte mi avrebbe assegnato Dio dall’alto, quale eredità mi avrebbe data l’Onnipotente dai luoghi eccelsi?

3 I s it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

La sventura non è forse per il perverso, e le sciagure per quelli che fanno il male?

4 D oth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

Dio non vede forse le mie vie? Non conta tutti i miei passi?

5 I f I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Se ho camminato insieme alla menzogna, se il piede mio si è affrettato dietro alla frode

6 ( Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

(Dio mi pesi con bilancia giusta e riconoscerà la mia integrità),

7 I f my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

se i miei passi hanno deviato dalla retta via, se il mio cuore è andato dietro ai miei occhi, se qualche sozzura mi si è attaccata alle mani,

8 T hen let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

che io semini e un altro mangi, e quanto è cresciuto nei miei campi sia sradicato!

9 I f my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

Se il mio cuore si è lasciato sedurre da una donna, se ho spiato la porta del mio prossimo,

10 T hen let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

che mia moglie giri la macina a un altro e che altri abusino di lei!

11 F or that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

Poiché quella sarebbe una scelleratezza, un misfatto punito dai giudici,

12 F or it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

un fuoco che consuma fino a perdizione e che avrebbe distrutto fin dalle radici ogni mia fortuna.

13 I f I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

Se ho disconosciuto il diritto del mio servo e della mia serva, quando erano in lite con me,

14 W hat then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

che farei quando Dio si alzasse per giudicarmi, e che risponderei quando mi esaminasse?

15 D id not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

Chi fece me nel grembo di mia madre non fece anche lui? Non ci ha formati nel grembo materno uno stesso Dio?

16 I f I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

Se ho rifiutato ai poveri quanto desideravano, se ho fatto languire gli occhi della vedova,

17 O r have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

se ho mangiato da solo il mio pezzo di pane senza che l’orfano ne mangiasse la sua parte,

18 ( Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

io che fin da giovane l’ho allevato come un padre, io che fin dal grembo di mia madre sono stato guida alla vedova,

19 I f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

se ho visto uno soffrire per mancanza di vesti o il povero senza una coperta,

20 I f his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

se non mi hanno benedetto i suoi fianchi ed egli non si è riscaldato con la lana dei miei agnelli,

21 I f I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

se ho alzato la mano contro l’orfano perché mi sapevo sostenuto alla porta della città,

22 T hen let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

che la mia spalla si stacchi dalla sua giuntura, il mio braccio si spezzi e cada!

23 F or calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

In effetti mi spaventava il castigo di Dio, ero trattenuto dalla maestà di lui.

24 I f I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Se ho riposto la mia fiducia nell’oro, se all’oro fino ho detto: “Tu sei la mia speranza”,

25 I f I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

se mi sono rallegrato che le mie ricchezze fossero grandi e la mia mano avesse molto accumulato,

26 I f I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

se, contemplando il sole che risplendeva e la luna che procedeva lucente nella sua corsa,

27 A nd my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

il mio cuore, in segreto, si è lasciato sedurre e la mia bocca ha posato un bacio sulla mano

28 T his also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

(misfatto anche questo punito dai giudici, perché avrei difatti rinnegato il Dio che sta lassù),

29 I f I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

se mi sono rallegrato della sciagura del mio nemico e ho esultato quando gli è piombata la sventura

30 ( Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

(io che non ho permesso alle mie labbra di peccare chiedendo la sua morte con imprecazione),

31 I f the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

se la gente della mia tenda non ha detto: “Chi è che non si sia saziato della carne delle sue bestie?”

32 ( The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

(Lo straniero non passava la notte fuori; le mie porte erano aperte al viandante),

33 I f like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

se, come fanno gli uomini, ho coperto i miei errori celando nel petto la mia iniquità,

34 B ecause I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

perché avevo paura della folla e del disprezzo delle famiglie, al punto da starmene tranquillo e non uscire di casa…

35 O h that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

Oh, avessi pure chi m’ascoltasse! Ecco qua la mia firma! L’Onnipotente mi risponda! Scriva l’avversario mio la sua querela

36 S urely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

e io la porterò attaccata alla mia spalla, me la cingerò come un diadema.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

Gli renderò conto di tutti i miei passi, a lui mi avvicinerò come un principe!

38 I f my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

Se la mia terra mi grida contro, se tutti i suoi solchi piangono,

39 I f I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

se ne ho mangiato il frutto senza pagarla, se ho fatto sospirare chi la coltivava,

40 L et thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

che invece di grano mi nascano spine, invece d’orzo mi crescano zizzanie!» Qui finiscono i discorsi di Giobbe.
