1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; How then should I look upon a virgin?

Hice pacto con mis ojos, de no fijar mi vista en ninguna doncella.

2 F or what is the portion from God above, And the heritage from the Almighty on high?

Porque ¿qué galardón me daría desde arriba Dios, Y qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas?

3 I s it not calamity to the unrighteous, And disaster to the workers of iniquity?

¿No hay quebrantamiento para el impío, Y extrañamiento para los que hacen iniquidad?

4 D oth not he see my ways, And number all my steps?

¿No ve él mis caminos, Y cuenta todos mis pasos?

5 I f I have walked with falsehood, And my foot hath hasted to deceit;

Si anduve con mentira, Y si mi pie se apresuró al engaño,

6 ( Let me be weighed in an even balance, That God may know mine integrity);

Péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia, Y conocerá mi integridad.

7 I f my step hath turned out of the way, And my heart walked after mine eyes, And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

Si mis pasos se apartaron del camino, Si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, Y si algo manchado se pegó a mis manos,

8 T hen let me sow, and let another eat; Yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

Que otro coma lo que siembre yo, Y sea arrancada mi sementera.

9 I f my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, And I have laid wait at my neighbor's door;

Si fue mi corazón seducido acerca de mujer, Y si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

10 T hen let my wife grind unto another, And let others bow down upon her.

Muela para otro mi mujer, Y otros se acuesten con ella.

11 F or that were a heinous crime; Yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

Porque sería maldad e iniquidad Que han de castigar los jueces.

12 F or it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, And would root out all mine increase.

Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta la Perdición, Y consumiría toda mi hacienda.

13 I f I have despised the cause of my man-servant or of my maid-servant, When they contended with me;

Si hubiera tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva, Cuando ellos contendían conmigo,

14 W hat then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

¿Qué haría yo cuando Dios se levantase? Y cuando él preguntara, ¿qué le respondería yo?

15 D id not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?

El que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no los hizo a ellos también? ¿Y no nos dispuso uno mismo en la matriz?

16 I f I have withheld the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

Si me negué al deseo de los pobres, E hice desfallecer los ojos de la viuda;

17 O r have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

Si comí mi bocado yo solo, Y no comió de él el huérfano

18 ( Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And her have I guided from my mother's womb);

(Porque desde mi juventud cuidé de él como un padre, Y desde el vientre de mi madre fui su protector);

19 I f I have seen any perish for want of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering;

Si he visto a algún desgraciado sin vestido, Y al menesteroso sin abrigo;

20 I f his loins have not blessed me, And if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

Si no me bendijeron sus lomos, Y del vellón de mis ovejas se calentaron;

21 I f I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

Si alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, Aunque viese que me respaldaban en la puerta;

22 T hen let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, And mine arm be broken from the bone.

Mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro, Y mi brazo sea desgajado.

23 F or calamity from God is a terror to me, And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

Porque temí el castigo de Dios, Contra cuya majestad yo no tendría poder.

24 I f I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Si puse en el oro mi esperanza, Y dije al oro: Mi confianza eres tú;

25 I f I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

Si puse mi complacencia en que mis riquezas se multiplicasen, Y en que mi mano acaparase mucho;

26 I f I have beheld the sun when it shined, Or the moon walking in brightness,

Si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, O a la luna cuando iba hermosa,

27 A nd my heart hath been secretly enticed, And my mouth hath kissed my hand:

Y mi corazón se engañó en secreto, Y mi boca les envió un beso de adoración con mi mano;

28 T his also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; For I should have denied the God that is above.

Esto también sería maldad juzgada; Porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

29 I f I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him;

Si me alegré en el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía, Y me regocijé cuando le halló el mal

30 ( Yea, I have not suffered by mouth to sin By asking his life with a curse);

(Ni aun entregué al pecado mi lengua, Pidiendo maldición para su alma);

31 I f the men of my tent have not said, Who can find one that hath not been filled with his meat?

Cuando mis siervos decían: ¡Quién nos diera saciarnos de su carne!

32 ( The sojourner hath not lodged in the street; But I have opened my doors to the traveller);

(El forastero no pasaba fuera la noche; Mis puertas abría al caminante);

33 I f like Adam I have covered my transgressions, By hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

Si encubrí como hombre mis transgresiones, Escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad,

34 B ecause I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, So that I kept silence, and went not out of the door-

Por temor de la opinión pública, Y el menosprecio de las gentes me asustaba, Hasta quedarme callado, sin atreverme a salir de mi puerta;

35 O h that I had one to hear me! (Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me); And that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

¡Quién me diera que Dios me oyese! He aquí mi confianza es que el Omnipotente testificará por mí; Aunque mi adversario escriba un libelo contra mí.

36 S urely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown:

Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, Y me lo ceñiría como una corona.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; As a prince would I go near unto him.

Yo le daría cuenta de todos mis pasos, Y como un príncipe me presentaría ante él.

38 I f my land crieth out against me, And the furrows thereof weep together;

Si mi tierra clama contra mí, Y lloran todos sus surcos;

39 I f I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, Or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

Si comí su cosecha sin pagarla, O afligí el alma de sus dueños,

40 L et thistles grow instead of wheat, And cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

En lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, Y espinos en lugar de cebada. Aquí terminan las palabras de Job.
