1 N ow Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Jefté galaadita era esforzado y valeroso; era hijo de una mujer ramera, y el padre de Jefté era Galaad.

2 A nd Gilead's wife bare him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.

Pero la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos, los cuales, cuando crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.

3 T hen Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Huyó, pues, Jefté de sus hermanos, y habitó en tierra de Tob; y se juntaron con él hombres ociosos, los cuales salían con él.

4 A nd it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Aconteció andando el tiempo, que los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.

5 A nd it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

Y cuando los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob;

6 a nd they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

y dijeron a Jefté: Ven, y serás nuestro jefe, en la guerra contra los hijos de Amón.

7 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me aborrecisteis vosotros, y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en aprieto?

8 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros y pelees contra los hijos de Amón, y seas caudillo de todos los que moramos en Galaad.

9 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Jefté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entrega delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestro caudillo?

10 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Jehová sea testigo entre nosotros, si no hacemos como tú dices.

11 T hen Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

Entonces Jefté vino con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió por su caudillo y jefe; y Jefté repitió todas sus condiciones delante de Jehová en Mizpá. Conversaciones de Jefté con los amonitas

12 A nd Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: ¿Qué tienes tú conmigo, que has venido a mí para hacer guerra contra mi tierra?

13 A nd the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

El rey de los amonitas respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté: Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán, ahora, pues, devuélvela en paz.

14 A nd Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

Y Jefté volvió a enviar otros mensajeros al rey de los amonitas,

15 a nd he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

para decirle: Jefté ha dicho así: Israel no tomó tierra de Moab, ni tierra de los hijos de Amón.

16 b ut when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

Porque cuando Israel subió de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, y llegó a Cadés.

17 t hen Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra; pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también al rey de Moab, el cual tampoco quiso; se quedó, por tanto, Israel en Cadés.

18 T hen they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y viniendo por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, acampó al otro lado de Arnón, y no entró en territorio de Moab; porque Arnón es territorio de Moab.

19 A nd Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

Y envió Israel mensajeros a Sehón rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.

20 B ut Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Mas Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su territorio, sino que reuniendo Sehón toda su gente, acampó en Jahaz, y peleó contra Israel.

21 A nd Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

Pero Jehová Dios de Israel entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en mano de Israel, y los derrotó; y se apoderó Israel de toda la tierra de los amorreos que habitaban en aquel país.

22 A nd they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

Se apoderaron también de todo el territorio del amorreo desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 S o now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

Así que, lo que Jehová Dios de Israel desposeyó al amorreo en favor de su pueblo Israel, ¿pretendes tú quitárselo a él?

24 W ilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

Lo que te hiciere poseer Quemós tu dios, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así, todo lo que desposeyó Jehová nuestro Dios delante de nosotros, nosotros lo poseeremos.

25 A nd now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

¿Eres tú ahora mejor en algo que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Tuvo él pleito con Israel, o hizo guerra contra ellos?

26 W hile Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Cuando Israel ha estado habitando por trescientos años a Hesbón y sus aldeas, a Aroer y sus aldeas, y todas las ciudades que están en el territorio de Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recobrado en ese tiempo?

27 I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

Así que, yo nada he pecado contra ti, mas tú haces mal conmigo peleando contra mí. Jehová, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.

28 H owbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Mas el rey de los hijos de Amón no atendió a las razones que Jefté le envió. El voto de Jefté y su victoria

29 T hen the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Y el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Jefté; y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y de allí pasó a Mizpá de Galaad, y de Mizpá de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

30 A nd Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

Y Jefté hizo voto a Jehová, diciendo: Si entregas a los amonitas en mis manos,

31 t hen it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme, cuando regrese victorioso de los amonitas, será de Jehová, y lo ofreceré en holocausto.

32 S o Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

Y fue Jefté hacia los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y Jehová los entregó en su mano.

33 A nd he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Y desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades, y hasta la vega de las viñas, los derrotó con muy gran estrago. Así fueron sometidos los amonitas por los hijos de Israel.

34 A nd Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

Entonces volvió Jefté a Mizpá, a su casa; y he aquí su hija que salía a recibirle con panderos y danzas, y ella era sola, su hija única; no tenía fuera de ella hijo ni hija.

35 A nd it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

Y cuando él la vio, rompió sus vestidos, diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía!, en verdad me has abatido, y tú misma has venido a ser causa de mi dolor; porque le he dado palabra a Jehová, y no podré retractarme.

36 A nd she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si le has dado palabra a Jehová, haz de mí conforme a lo que prometiste, ya que Jehová ha hecho venganza en tus enemigos los hijos de Amón.

37 A nd she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

Y volvió a decir a su padre: Concédeme esto: déjame que por dos meses me vaya a vagar por los montes, y llore mi virginidad con mis compañeras.

38 A nd he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Él, entonces, dijo: Ve. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

39 A nd it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

Pasados los dos meses volvió a su padre, quien hizo de ella conforme al voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón.

40 t hat the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

Y se hizo costumbre en Israel, que de año en año fueran las doncellas de Israel a endechar a la hija de Jefté galaadita, cuatro días al año.
