1 G ive ear, ye heavens, and I will speak; And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.

«Porgete orecchio, o cieli, e io parlerò; e ascolti la terra le parole della mia bocca.

2 M y doctrine shall drop as the rain; My speech shall distil as the dew, As the small rain upon the tender grass, And as the showers upon the herb.

Si spanda il mio insegnamento come la pioggia, stilli la mia parola come la rugiada, come la pioggerella sopra la verdura e come un acquazzone sopra l’erba,

3 F or I will proclaim the name of Jehovah: Ascribe ye greatness unto our God.

poiché io proclamerò il nome del Signore. Magnificate il nostro Dio!

4 T he Rock, his work is perfect; For all his ways are justice: A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, Just and right is he.

Egli è la rocca, l’opera sua è perfetta, poiché tutte le sue vie sono giustizia. È un Dio fedele e senza iniquità. Egli è giusto e retto.

5 T hey have dealt corruptly with him, they are not his children, it is their blemish; They are a perverse and crooked generation.

Hanno agito perversamente contro di lui; non sono suoi figli, questi corrotti, razza storta e perversa.

6 D o ye thus requite Jehovah, O foolish people and unwise? Is not he thy father that hath bought thee? He hath made thee, and established thee.

È questa la ricompensa che date al Signore, o popolo insensato e privo di saggezza? Non è lui il padre che ti ha acquistato? Non è lui che ti ha fatto e stabilito?

7 R emember the days of old, Consider the years of many generations: Ask thy father, and he will show thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee.

«Ricòrdati dei giorni antichi, considera gli anni delle età passate, interroga tuo padre ed egli te lo farà conoscere, i tuoi vecchi ed essi te lo diranno.

8 W hen the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, When he separated the children of men, He set the bounds of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel.

Quando l’Altissimo diede alle nazioni la loro eredità, quando separò i figli degli uomini, egli fissò i confini dei popoli, tenendo conto del numero dei figli d’Israele.

9 F or Jehovah's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

Poiché la parte del Signore è il suo popolo, Giacobbe è la porzione della sua eredità.

10 H e found him in a desert land, And in the waste howling wilderness; He compassed him about, he cared for him, He kept him as the apple of his eye.

Egli lo trovò in una terra deserta, in una solitudine piena di urli e di desolazione. Egli lo circondò, se ne prese cura, lo custodì come la pupilla dei suoi occhi.

11 A s an eagle that stirreth up her nest, That fluttereth over her young, He spread abroad his wings, he took them, He bare them on his pinions.

Come un’aquila che desta la sua nidiata, volteggia sopra i suoi piccini, spiega le sue ali, li prende e li porta sulle penne.

12 J ehovah alone did lead him, And there was no foreign god with him.

Il Signore solo lo ha condotto e nessun dio straniero era con lui.

13 H e made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he did eat the increase of the field; And he made him to suck honey out of the rock, And oil out of the flinty rock;

Egli lo ha fatto passare a cavallo sulle alture della terra e Israele ha mangiato il prodotto dei campi; gli ha fatto succhiare il miele che esce dalla rupe, l’olio che esce dalle rocce più dure,

14 B utter of the herd, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs, And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, With the finest of the wheat; And of the blood of the grape thou drankest wine.

la crema delle vacche e il latte delle pecore. Lo ha nutrito con il grasso degli agnelli, dei montoni di Basan e dei capri, con la farina del fior fiore del grano. Tu hai bevuto il vino generoso, il sangue dell’uva.

15 B ut Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: Thou art waxed fat, thou art grown thick, thou art become sleek; Then he forsook God who made him, And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

Iesurun si è fatto grasso e ha recalcitrato, si è fatto grasso, grosso e pingue, ha abbandonato il Dio che lo ha fatto e ha disprezzato la Rocca della sua salvezza.

16 T hey moved him to jealousy with strange gods; With abominations provoked they him to anger.

Essi lo hanno fatto ingelosire con divinità straniere, lo hanno irritato con pratiche abominevoli.

17 T hey sacrificed unto demons, which were no God, To gods that they knew not, To new gods that came up of late, Which your fathers dreaded not.

Hanno sacrificato a dèmoni che non sono Dio, a dèi che non avevano conosciuto, dèi nuovi, apparsi di recente, che i vostri padri non avevano temuto.

18 O f the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, And hast forgotten God that gave thee birth.

Hai abbandonato la Rocca che ti diede la vita, e hai dimenticato il Dio che ti mise al mondo.

19 A nd Jehovah saw it, and abhorred them, Because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters.

Il Signore lo ha visto, e ha rinnegato i suoi figli e le sue figlie che l’avevano irritato;

20 A nd he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: For they are a very perverse generation, Children in whom is no faithfulness.

e ha detto: “Io nasconderò loro il mio volto e starò a vedere quale sarà la loro fine; poiché sono una razza perversa, sono figli infedeli.

21 T hey have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; They have provoked me to anger with their vanities: And I will move them to jealousy with those that are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

Essi mi hanno fatto ingelosire con ciò che non è Dio, mi hanno irritato con i loro idoli vani; e io li renderò gelosi con gente che non è un popolo, li irriterò con una nazione stolta.

22 F or a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest Sheol, And devoureth the earth with its increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains.

Infatti il fuoco della mia ira si è acceso e divamperà fino in fondo al soggiorno dei morti; divorerà la terra e i suoi prodotti e infiammerà le fondamenta delle montagne.

23 I will heap evils upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them:

Io accumulerò disgrazie su di loro, esaurirò contro di loro tutte le mie frecce.

24 T hey shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat And bitter destruction; And the teeth of beasts will I send upon them, With the poison of crawling things of the dust.

Essi saranno consumati dalla fame, divorati dalla febbre e da malattie mortali; manderò contro di loro le zanne delle belve e il veleno dei serpenti che strisciano nella polvere.

25 W ithout shall the sword bereave, And in the chambers terror; It shall destroy both young man and virgin, The suckling with the man of gray hairs.

Di fuori la spada e di dentro il terrore spargeranno il lutto, mietendo giovani e fanciulle, lattanti e uomini canuti.

26 I said, I would scatter them afar, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men;

Io direi: ‘Li spazzerò via d’un soffio, farò sparire la loro memoria dal genere umano’,

27 W ere it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, Lest their adversaries should judge amiss, Lest they should say, Our hand is exalted, And Jehovah hath not done all this.

se non temessi gli insulti del nemico e che i loro avversari, illudendosi, fossero indotti a dire: ‘È stata la nostra potente mano che ha fatto tutto questo, e non il Signore ’”.

28 F or they are a nation void of counsel, And there is no understanding in them.

Poiché è una nazione che ha perduto il senno e non c’è intelligenza in loro.

29 O h that they were wise, that they understood this, That they would consider their latter end!

Se fossero savi, lo capirebbero e considererebbero la fine che li aspetta.

30 H ow should one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Except their Rock had sold them, And Jehovah had delivered them up?

Come potrebbe uno solo inseguirne mille, e due metterne in fuga diecimila, se la loro Rocca non li avesse venduti, se il Signore non li avesse dati in mano al nemico?

31 F or their rock is not as our Rock, Even our enemies themselves being judges.

Poiché la loro rocca non è come la nostra Rocca; i nostri stessi nemici ne sono giudici;

32 F or their vine is of the vine of Sodom, And of the fields of Gomorrah: Their grapes are grapes of gall, Their clusters are bitter:

ma la loro vigna viene dalla vigna di Sodoma e dalle campagne di Gomorra; le loro uve sono uve avvelenate, i loro grappoli, amari;

33 T heir wine is the poison of serpents, And the cruel venom of asps.

il loro vino è tossico di serpenti, un crudele veleno di vipere.

34 I s not this laid up in store with me, Sealed up among my treasures?

«“Tutto questo non è forse riposto presso di me, sigillato nei miei tesori?

35 V engeance is mine, and recompense, At the time when their foot shall slide: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that are to come upon them shall make haste.

A me la vendetta e la retribuzione, quando il loro piede vacillerà! Poiché il giorno della sventura è vicino e ciò che li aspetta non tarderà”.

36 F or Jehovah will judge his people, And repent himself for his servants; When he seeth that their power is gone, And there is none remaining, shut up or left at large.

Sì, il Signore giudicherà il suo popolo, ma avrà pietà dei suoi servi quando vedrà che la forza è sparita e che non rimane più tra di loro né schiavo né libero.

37 A nd he will say, Where are their gods, The rock in which they took refuge;

Allora egli dirà: “Dove sono i loro dèi, la rocca nella quale confidavano,

38 W hich did eat the fat of their sacrifices, And drank the wine of their drink-offering? Let them rise up and help you, Let them be your protection.

gli dèi che mangiavano il grasso dei loro sacrifici e bevevano il vino delle loro libazioni? Si alzino loro a soccorrervi, a coprirvi con la loro protezione!

39 S ee now that I, even I, am he, And there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; And there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

Ora vedete che io solo sono Dio e che non vi è altro dio accanto a me. Io faccio morire e faccio vivere, ferisco e risano, e nessuno può liberare dalla mia mano.

40 F or I lift up my hand to heaven, And say, As I live for ever,

Sì, io alzo la mia mano al cielo e dico: ‘Com’è vero che io vivo in eterno,

41 I f I whet my glittering sword, And my hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine adversaries, And will recompense them that hate me.

quando affilerò la mia spada folgorante e la mia mano si leverà a giudicare, farò vendetta dei miei nemici e darò ciò che si meritano a quelli che mi odiano.

42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, And my sword shall devour flesh; With the blood of the slain and the captives, From the head of the leaders of the enemy.

Inebrierò di sangue le mie frecce, del sangue degli uccisi e dei prigionieri; la mia spada divorerà la carne, le teste dei condottieri nemici’”.

43 R ejoice, O ye nations, with his people: For he will avenge the blood of his servants, And will render vengeance to his adversaries, And will make expiation for his land, for his people.

Nazioni, cantate le lodi del suo popolo! Poiché il Signore vendica il sangue dei suoi servi, fa ricadere la sua vendetta sopra i suoi avversari, ma si mostra propizio alla sua terra, al suo popolo».

44 A nd Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.

E Mosè venne con Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e pronunciò in presenza del popolo tutte le parole di questo cantico.

45 A nd Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel;

E quando Mosè ebbe finito di pronunciare tutte queste parole davanti a tutto Israele, disse loro:

46 A nd he said unto them, Set your heart unto all the words which I testify unto you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, even all the words of this law.

«Prendete a cuore tutte le parole che oggi pronuncio solennemente davanti a voi. Le prescriverete ai vostri figli, affinché abbiano cura di mettere in pratica tutte le parole di questa legge.

47 F or it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over the Jordan to possess it.

Poiché questa non è una parola senza valore per voi: anzi, è la vostra vita; per questa parola prolungherete i vostri giorni nel paese del quale andate a prendere possesso, passando il Giordano». Mosè riceve l’ordine di salire sul monte Nebo

48 A nd Jehovah spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying,

In quello stesso giorno il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse:

49 G et thee up into this mountain of Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession;

«Sali su questo monte di Abarim, sul monte Nebo, che è nel paese di Moab, di fronte a Gerico, e guarda il paese di Canaan, che io do in possesso ai figli d’Israele.

50 a nd die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

Tu morirai sul monte sul quale stai per salire e sarai riunito al tuo popolo, come tuo fratello Aaronne è morto sul monte Or ed è stato riunito al suo popolo,

51 b ecause ye trespassed against me in the midst of the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah of Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

perché mi siete stati infedeli in mezzo ai figli d’Israele, presso le acque di Meriba, a Cades, nel deserto di Sin, in quanto non mi avete santificato in mezzo ai figli d’Israele.

52 F or thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither into the land which I give the children of Israel.

Tu vedrai il paese davanti a te, ma là, nel paese che io do ai figli d’Israele, non entrerai».
