1 F iglio mio, non dimenticare il mio insegnamento e il tuo cuore custodisca i miei comandamenti,

My son, forget not my law; But let thy heart keep my commandments:

2 p erché ti procureranno lunghi giorni, anni di vita e di prosperità.

For length of days, and years of life, And peace, will they add to thee.

3 B ontà e verità non ti abbandonino: legatele al collo, scrivile sulla tavola del tuo cuore;

Let not kindness and truth forsake thee: Bind them about thy neck; Write them upon the tablet of thy heart:

4 t roverai così grazia e buon senso agli occhi di Dio e degli uomini.

So shalt thou find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man.

5 C onfida nel Signore con tutto il cuore e non ti appoggiare sul tuo discernimento.

Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart, And lean not upon thine own understanding:

6 R iconoscilo in tutte le tue vie ed egli appianerà i tuoi sentieri.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths.

7 N on ti stimare saggio da te stesso, temi il Signore e allontanati dal male;

Be not wise in thine own eyes; Fear Jehovah, and depart from evil:

8 q uesto sarà la salute del tuo corpo e un refrigerio alle tue ossa.

It will be health to thy navel, And marrow to thy bones.

9 O nora il Signore con i tuoi beni e con le primizie di ogni tua rendita;

Honor Jehovah with thy substance, And with the first-fruits of all thine increase:

10 i tuoi granai saranno ricolmi d’abbondanza e i tuoi tini traboccheranno di mosto.

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy vats shall overflow with new wine.

11 F iglio mio, non disprezzare la correzione del Signore e non ti ripugni la sua riprensione,

My son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah; Neither be weary of his reproof:

12 p erché il Signore riprende colui che egli ama, come un padre il figlio che gradisce.

For whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth; Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

13 B eato l’uomo che ha trovato la saggezza, l’uomo che ottiene l’intelligenza!

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, And the man that getteth understanding.

14 P oiché il guadagno che essa procura è migliore di quello dell’argento, il profitto che se ne trae vale più dell’oro fino.

For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver, And the profit thereof than fine gold.

15 E ssa è più pregevole delle perle, quanto hai di più prezioso non la equivale.

She is more precious than rubies: And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her.

16 L unghezza di vita è nella sua destra; ricchezza e gloria nella sua sinistra.

Length of days is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.

17 L e sue vie sono vie deliziose, e tutti i suoi sentieri sono pace.

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.

18 E ssa è un albero di vita per quelli che l’afferrano, e chi la possiede è beato.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: And happy is every one that retaineth her.

19 C on la saggezza il Signore fondò la terra, e con l’intelligenza rese stabili i cieli.

Jehovah by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding he established the heavens.

20 P er la sua scienza gli abissi furono aperti, e le nuvole distillano la rugiada.

By his knowledge the depths were broken up, And the skies drop down the dew.

21 F iglio mio, queste cose non si allontanino mai dai tuoi occhi! Conserva la saggezza e la riflessione!

My son, let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

22 E sse saranno vita per l’anima tua e un ornamento al tuo collo.

So shall they be life unto thy soul, And grace to thy neck.

23 A llora camminerai sicuro per la tua via e il tuo piede non inciamperà.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way securely, And thy foot shall not stumble.

24 Q uando ti coricherai non avrai paura; starai a letto e il tuo sonno sarà dolce.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

25 N on avrai da temere lo spavento improvviso, né la rovina degli empi, quando verrà,

Be not afraid of sudden fear, Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh:

26 p erché il Signore sarà la tua sicurezza e preserverà il tuo piede da ogni insidia.

For Jehovah will be thy confidence, And will keep thy foot from being taken.

27 N on rifiutare un beneficio a chi vi ha diritto, quando è in tuo potere di farlo.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the power of thy hand to do it.

28 N on dire al tuo prossimo: «Va’ e torna, te lo darò domani», quando hai la cosa con te.

Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, And to-morrow I will give; When thou hast it by thee.

29 N on tramare il male contro il tuo prossimo, mentre egli abita fiducioso con te.

Devise not evil against thy neighbor, Seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

30 N on fare causa a nessuno senza motivo, se non ti è stato fatto alcun torto.

Strive not with a man without cause, If he have done thee no harm.

31 N on portare invidia all’uomo violento e non scegliere nessuna delle sue vie,

Envy thou not the man of violence, And choose none of his ways.

32 p oiché il Signore ha in abominio l’uomo perverso, ma la sua amicizia è per gli uomini retti.

For the perverse is an abomination to Jehovah; But his friendship is with the upright.

33 L a maledizione del Signore è nella casa dell’empio, ma egli benedice l’abitazione dei giusti.

The curse of Jehovah is in the house of the wicked; But he blesseth the habitation of the righteous.

34 S e schernisce gli schernitori, fa grazia agli umili.

Surely he scoffeth at the scoffers; But he giveth grace unto the lowly.

35 I saggi erediteranno la gloria, ma l’infamia è la parte che spetta agli stolti.

The wise shall inherit glory; But shame shall be the promotion of fools.
