1 P roverbi di Salomone, figlio di Davide, re d’Israele,

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

2 p erché l’uomo conosca la saggezza, l’istruzione e comprenda i detti sensati;

To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;

3 p erché riceva istruzione sul buon senso, la giustizia, l’equità e la rettitudine;

To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;

4 p er dare accorgimento ai semplici e conoscenza e riflessione al giovane.

To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:

5 I l saggio ascolterà e accrescerà il suo sapere; l’uomo intelligente ne otterrà buone direttive

That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

6 p er capire i proverbi e le allegorie, le parole dei saggi e i loro enigmi.

To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

7 I l timore del Signore è il principio della scienza; gli stolti disprezzano la saggezza e l’istruzione.

The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

8 A scolta, figlio mio, l’istruzione di tuo padre e non rifiutare l’insegnamento di tua madre,

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother:

9 p oiché saranno un fregio di grazia sul tuo capo e monili al tuo collo. Avvertimento contro le cattive compagnie

For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck.

10 F iglio mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sviare, non dar loro retta.

My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not.

11 P otranno dirti: «Vieni con noi! Mettiamoci in agguato per uccidere; tendiamo insidie senza motivo all’innocente.

If they say, Come with us, Let us lay wait for blood; Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

12 I nghiottiamoli vivi, come il soggiorno dei morti, e tutti interi, come quelli che scendono nella tomba;

Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those that go down into the pit;

13 n oi troveremo ogni sorta di beni preziosi, riempiremo le nostre case di bottino.

We shall find all precious substance; We shall fill our houses with spoil;

14 T u estrarrai a sorte la tua parte con noi, non ci sarà tra noi tutti che una borsa sola».

Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse:

15 T u però, figlio mio, non t’incamminare con loro; trattieni il tuo piede lontano dal loro sentiero,

My son, walk not thou in the way with them; Refrain thy foot from their path:

16 p oiché i loro piedi corrono al male, essi si affrettano a spargere il sangue.

For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

17 S i tende invano la rete davanti a ogni sorta di uccelli,

For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird:

18 m a costoro pongono agguati al loro proprio sangue e tendono insidie alla loro vita stessa.

And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk privily for their own lives.

19 T ali sono le vie di chiunque si dà alla rapina; essa toglie la vita a chi la commette. La saggezza esorta

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

20 L a saggezza grida per le vie, fa udire la sua voce per le piazze;

Wisdom crieth aloud in the street; She uttereth her voice in the broad places;

21 n egli incroci affollati essa chiama, all’ingresso delle porte, in città, pronuncia i suoi discorsi:

She crieth in the chief place of concourse; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she uttereth her words:

22 « Fino a quando, ingenui, amerete l’ingenuità? Fino a quando gli schernitori prenderanno gusto a schernire e gli stolti avranno in odio la scienza?

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And scoffers delight them in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?

23 V olgetevi ad ascoltare la mia correzione; ecco, io farò sgorgare su di voi il mio Spirito, vi farò conoscere le mie parole.

Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit upon you; I will make known my words unto you.

24 P oiché quand’ho chiamato avete rifiutato di ascoltare, quand’ho steso la mano nessuno vi ha badato,

Because I have called, and ye have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man hath regarded;

25 a nzi, avete respinto ogni mio consiglio e della mia correzione non ne avete voluto sapere,

But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof:

26 a nch’io riderò delle vostre sventure, mi farò beffe quando lo spavento vi piomberà addosso;

I also will laugh in the day of your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

27 q uando lo spavento vi piomberà addosso come una tempesta, quando la sventura v’investirà come un uragano e vi cadranno addosso l’afflizione e l’angoscia.

When your fear cometh as a storm, And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 A llora mi chiameranno, ma io non risponderò; mi cercheranno con premura ma non mi troveranno.

Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

29 P oiché hanno odiato la scienza, non hanno scelto il timore del Signore,

For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Jehovah:

30 n on hanno voluto saperne dei miei consigli e hanno disprezzato ogni mia correzione,

They would none of my counsel; They despised all my reproof.

31 s i pasceranno del frutto della loro condotta e saranno saziati dei loro propri consigli.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.

32 I nfatti il pervertimento degli insensati li uccide e la prosperità degli stolti li fa perire,

For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, And the careless ease of fools shall destroy them.

33 m a chi mi ascolta starà al sicuro, vivrà tranquillo, senza paura di nessun male».

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.
