1 C hi si separa dagli altri cerca la propria soddisfazione e si irrita contro tutto ciò che è giusto.

He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, And rageth against all sound wisdom.

2 L o stolto prende piacere non nell’intelligenza, ma soltanto nel manifestare ciò che ha nel cuore.

A fool hath no delight in understanding, But only that his heart may reveal itself.

3 Q uando viene l’empio, viene anche il disprezzo, e con la vergogna viene il disonore.

When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, And with ignominy cometh reproach.

4 L e parole della bocca di un uomo sono acque profonde; la fonte di saggezza è un ruscello che scorre perenne.

The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; The wellspring of wisdom is as a flowing brook.

5 N on è bene avere per l’empio dei riguardi personali, per fare torto al giusto nel giudizio.

To respect the person of the wicked is not good, Nor to turn aside the righteous in judgment.

6 L e labbra dello stolto causano liti, e la sua bocca attira percosse.

A fool's lips enter into contention, And his mouth calleth for stripes.

7 L a bocca dello stolto è la sua rovina, e le sue labbra sono un laccio per la sua anima.

A fool's mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.

8 L e parole del maldicente sono come ghiottonerie e penetrano fino all’intimo delle viscere.

The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts.

9 A nche colui che è sfaticato nel suo lavoro è fratello del dissipatore.

He also that is slack in his work Is brother to him that is a destroyer.

10 I l nome del Signore è una forte torre; il giusto vi corre e vi trova un alto rifugio.

The name of Jehovah is a strong tower; The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

11 I beni del ricco sono la sua roccaforte; sono come un’alta muraglia, nella sua immaginazione.

The rich man's wealth is his strong city, And as a high wall in his own imagination.

12 P rima della rovina il cuore dell’uomo s’innalza, ma l’umiltà precede la gloria.

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty; And before honor goeth humility.

13 C hi risponde prima di avere ascoltato mostra la sua follia e rimane confuso.

He that giveth answer before he heareth, It is folly and shame unto him.

14 L o spirito dell’uomo lo sostiene quand’egli è infermo, ma lo spirito abbattuto chi lo solleverà?

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; But a broken spirit who can bear?

15 I l cuore dell’uomo intelligente acquista la scienza, e l’orecchio dei saggi la cerca.

The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

16 I regali che uno fa gli aprono la strada e gli danno accesso tra i grandi.

A man's gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.

17 I l primo a perorare la propria causa pare che abbia ragione; ma viene l’altra parte e lo mette alla prova.

He that pleadeth his cause first seemeth just; But his neighbor cometh and searcheth him out.

18 L a sorte fa cessare le liti e decide fra i grandi.

The lot causeth contentions to cease, And parteth between the mighty.

19 U n fratello offeso è più inespugnabile di una fortezza, e le liti tra fratelli sono come le sbarre di un castello.

A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; And such contentions are like the bars of a castle.

20 C on il frutto della sua bocca l’uomo sazia il corpo; si sazia con il frutto delle sue labbra.

A man's belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; With the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.

21 M orte e vita sono in potere della lingua; chi l’ama ne mangerà i frutti.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue; And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

22 C hi ha trovato moglie ha trovato un bene e ha ottenuto un favore dal Signore.

Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, And obtaineth favor of Jehovah.

23 I l povero parla supplicando, e il ricco risponde con durezza.

The poor useth entreaties; But the rich answereth roughly.

24 C hi ha molti amici può esserne sopraffatto, ma c’è un amico che è più affezionato di un fratello.

He that maketh many friends doeth it to his own destruction; But there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
