1 I n quel tempo non c’era re in Israele. Un Levita, il quale abitava nella parte più lontana della regione montuosa di Efraim, si prese per concubina una donna di Betlemme di Giuda.

And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.

2 Q uesta sua concubina gli fu infedele e lo lasciò per andarsene a casa di suo padre a Betlemme di Giuda, dove stette per un periodo di quattro mesi.

And his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there the space of four months.

3 S uo marito si mosse e andò da lei per parlare al suo cuore e ricondurla con sé. Egli aveva preso con sé il suo servo e due asini. Lei lo condusse in casa di suo padre; e come il padre della giovane lo vide, gli si fece incontro festosamente.

And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly unto her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

4 S uo suocero, il padre della giovane, lo trattenne ed egli rimase con lui tre giorni; mangiarono, bevvero e pernottarono là.

And his father-in-law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.

5 I l quarto giorno si alzarono di buon’ora e il Levita si disponeva a partire; il padre della giovane disse a suo genero: «Prendi un boccone di pane per fortificarti il cuore; poi ve ne andrete».

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye shall go your way.

6 S i sedettero ambedue, mangiarono e bevvero insieme. Poi il padre della giovane disse al marito: «Ti prego, acconsenti a passare qui la notte e il tuo cuore si rallegri».

So they sat down, and did eat and drink, both of them together: and the damsel's father said unto the man, Be pleased, I pray thee, to tarry all night, and let thy heart be merry.

7 M a quell’uomo si alzò per andarsene; nondimeno, per l’insistenza del suocero, pernottò di nuovo là.

And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.

8 I l quinto giorno egli si alzò di buon’ora per andarsene; e il padre della giovane gli disse: «Ti prego, fortificati il cuore e aspettate finché declini il giorno». Si misero a mangiare insieme.

And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Strengthen thy heart, I pray thee, and tarry ye until the day declineth; and they did eat, both of them.

9 Q uando quell’uomo si alzò per andarsene con la sua concubina e con il suo servo, il suocero, il padre della giovane, gli disse: «Ecco, il giorno volge ora a sera. Ti prego, trattieniti qui questa notte; vedi, il giorno sta per finire; pernotta qui e il tuo cuore si rallegri. Domani vi metterete di buon’ora in cammino e te ne andrai a casa».

And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thy heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.

10 M a il marito non volle passarvi la notte; si alzò, partì, e giunse di fronte a Gebus, che è Gerusalemme, con i suoi due asini sellati e con la sua concubina.

But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of asses saddled; his concubine also was with him.

11 Q uando furono vicini a Gebus, era quasi notte; il servo disse al suo padrone: «Vieni, ti prego, dirigiamo il cammino verso questa città dei Gebusei e passiamoci la notte».

When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.

12 I l padrone gli rispose: «No, non dirigeremo il cammino verso una città di stranieri i cui abitanti non sono figli d’Israele, ma andremo fino a Ghibea».

And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.

13 D isse ancora al suo servo: «Andiamo, cerchiamo d’arrivare a uno di quei luoghi e pernotteremo a Ghibea o a Rama».

And he said unto his servant, Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.

14 C osì passarono oltre e continuarono il viaggio; e il sole tramontò quando erano presso Ghibea, che appartiene a Beniamino.

So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them near to Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.

15 V olsero il cammino in quella direzione, per andare a pernottare a Ghibea. Il Levita andò e si fermò sulla piazza della città; ma nessuno li accolse in casa per la notte.

And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

16 Q uando ecco un vecchio, che tornava la sera dai campi, dal suo lavoro; era un uomo della regione montuosa di Efraim, che abitava come forestiero a Ghibea, in mezzo ai Beniaminiti.

And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

17 I l vecchio alzò gli occhi, vide quel viandante sulla piazza della città e gli disse: «Dove vai, e da dove vieni?»

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?

18 Q uello gli rispose: «Siamo partiti da Betlemme di Giuda e andiamo nella parte più remota della zona montuosa di Efraim. Io sono di là ed ero andato a Betlemme di Giuda; ora sto andando alla casa del Signore, ma nessuno mi accoglie in casa sua.

And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am now going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house.

19 E ppure abbiamo paglia e foraggio per i nostri asini e anche pane e vino per me, per la tua serva e per il giovane che è con i tuoi servi; a noi non manca nulla».

Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything.

20 I l vecchio gli disse: «La pace sia con te! Mi incarico io di ogni tuo bisogno; ma non devi passare la notte sulla piazza».

And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.

21 C osì lo condusse in casa sua e diede del foraggio agli asini; i viandanti si lavarono i piedi, mangiarono e bevvero.

So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

22 M entre stavano rallegrandosi, ecco gli uomini della città, gente perversa, circondarono la casa, picchiarono alla porta e dissero al vecchio, al padrone di casa: «Fa’ uscire quell’uomo che è entrato in casa tua, perché vogliamo abusare di lui!»

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, beset the house round about, beating at the door; and they spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thy house, that we may know him.

23 M a il padrone di casa, uscito fuori, disse loro: «No, fratelli miei, vi prego, non fate una cattiva azione; dal momento che quest’uomo è venuto in casa mia, non commettete quest’infamia!

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, do not this folly.

24 E cco qua mia figlia che è vergine, e la concubina di quell’uomo; io ve le condurrò fuori e voi abusatene e fatene quel che vi piacerà; ma non commettete contro quell’uomo una simile infamia!»

Behold, here is my daughter a virgin, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not any such folly.

25 M a quegli uomini non vollero dargli ascolto. Allora l’uomo prese la sua concubina e la condusse fuori da loro; ed essi la presero, abusarono di lei tutta la notte fino al mattino; poi, allo spuntar dell’alba, la lasciarono andare.

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man laid hold on his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

26 Q uella donna, sul far del giorno, venne a cadere alla porta di casa dell’uomo presso il quale stava suo marito e rimase lì finché fu giorno chiaro.

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.

27 S uo marito, la mattina, si alzò, aprì la porta di casa e uscì per continuare il suo viaggio, quand’ecco la donna, la sua concubina, giaceva distesa alla porta di casa, con le mani sulla soglia.

And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands upon the threshold.

28 E gli le disse: «Àlzati, andiamocene!» Ma non ebbe risposta. Allora il marito la caricò sull’asino e partì per tornare a casa sua.

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going; but none answered: then he took her up upon the ass; and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

29 Q uando giunse a casa, si munì di un coltello, prese la sua concubina e la divise, membro per membro, in dodici pezzi, che mandò per tutto il territorio d’Israele.

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.

30 T utti quelli che videro ciò dissero: «Una cosa simile non è mai accaduta né si è mai vista, da quando i figli d’Israele salirono dal paese d’Egitto fino al giorno d’oggi! Prendete a cuore questo fatto, consultatevi e parlate».

And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak.
