1 I oas aveva sette anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò quarant’anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Sibia da Beer-Sceba.

Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Zibiah, of Beer-sheba.

2 I oas fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore per tutto il tempo che visse il sacerdote Ieoiada.

And Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

3 I eoiada prese per lui due mogli, dalle quali egli ebbe dei figli e delle figlie.

And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

4 D opo queste cose venne in cuore a Ioas di restaurare la casa del Signore.

And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to restore the house of Jehovah.

5 R adunò i sacerdoti e i Leviti e disse loro: «Andate per le città di Giuda e raccogliete, anno per anno, in tutto Israele del denaro per restaurare la casa del vostro Dio; e guardate di sollecitare la cosa». Ma i Leviti non si affrettarono.

And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year; and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

6 A llora il re chiamò Ieoiada, loro capo, e gli disse: «Perché non hai fatto in modo che i Leviti portassero da Giuda e da Gerusalemme la tassa che Mosè, servo del Signore, e l’assemblea d’Israele stabilirono per la tenda della testimonianza?»

And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tax of Moses the servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?

7 I nfatti l’empia Atalia e i suoi figli avevano saccheggiato la casa di Dio e avevano perfino adoperato per i Baal tutte le cose consacrate della casa del Signore.

For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of Jehovah did they bestow upon the Baalim.

8 I l re dunque comandò che si facesse una cassa e che la si mettesse fuori, alla porta della casa del Signore.

So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of Jehovah.

9 P oi fu ordinato in Giuda e in Gerusalemme che si portasse al Signore la tassa che Mosè, servo di Dio, aveva imposta a Israele nel deserto.

And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Jehovah the tax that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

10 T utti i capi e tutto il popolo se ne rallegrarono e portarono il denaro, e lo mettevano nella cassa finché tutti ebbero pagato.

And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

11 Q uand’era il momento che i Leviti dovevano portare la cassa agli ispettori reali, perché vedevano che c’era molto denaro, il segretario del re e il commissario del sommo sacerdote venivano a vuotare la cassa; la prendevano, poi la riportavano al suo posto; facevano così ogni giorno, e raccolsero denaro in abbondanza.

And it was so, that, at what time the chest was brought unto the king's officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king's scribe and the chief priest's officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

12 I l re e Ieoiada lo davano a quanti erano incaricati di eseguire i lavori della casa del Signore; e questi pagavano degli scalpellini e dei falegnami per restaurare la casa del Signore, e anche dei lavoratori del ferro e del bronzo per restaurare la casa del Signore.

And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Jehovah; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of Jehovah, and also such as wrought iron and brass to repair the house of Jehovah.

13 C osì gli incaricati dei lavori si misero all’opera, e per le loro mani furono compiute le riparazioni; essi rimisero la casa di Dio in buono stato e la consolidarono.

So the workmen wrought, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up the house of God in its state, and strengthened it.

14 Q uand’ebbero finito, portarono davanti al re e davanti a Ieoiada il rimanente del denaro, con il quale si fecero degli utensili per la casa del Signore: degli utensili per il servizio e per gli olocausti, delle coppe e altri utensili d’oro e d’argento. E durante tutta la vita di Ieoiada si offrirono continuamente olocausti nella casa del Signore.

And when they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of Jehovah, even vessels wherewith to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 M a Ieoiada, fattosi vecchio e sazio di giorni, morì; quando morì, aveva centotrent’anni;

But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days, and he died; a hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.

16 e fu sepolto nella città di Davide con i re, perché aveva fatto del bene in Israele, per il servizio di Dio e della sua casa. Idolatria e ingratitudine di Ioas; suo castigo e morte

And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

17 D opo la morte di Ieoiada, i capi di Giuda andarono dal re e si prostrarono davanti a lui; allora il re diede loro ascolto;

Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

18 e d essi abbandonarono la casa del Signore, Dio dei loro padri, e servirono gli idoli di Astarte e gli altri idoli; e questa loro colpa provocò l’ira del Signore contro Giuda e contro Gerusalemme.

And they forsook the house of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.

19 I l Signore mandò loro dei profeti per ricondurli a sé e questi protestarono contro la loro condotta, ma essi non vollero ascoltarli.

Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto Jehovah; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

20 A llora lo Spirito di Dio rivestì Zaccaria, figlio del sacerdote Ieoiada, il quale, stando in piedi in mezzo al popolo, disse: «Così dice Dio: “Perché trasgredite i comandamenti del Signore ? Voi non prospererete; poiché avete abbandonato il Signore, anch’egli vi abbandonerà”».

And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of Jehovah, so that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken Jehovah, he hath also forsaken you.

21 M a quelli fecero una congiura contro di lui e lo lapidarono per ordine del re nel cortile della casa del Signore.

And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah.

22 I l re Ioas non si ricordò della benevolenza usata verso di lui da Ieoiada, padre di Zaccaria, e gli uccise il figlio, il quale, morendo, disse: «Il Signore lo veda e ne chieda conto!»

Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah look upon it, and require it.

23 T rascorso quell’anno, l’esercito dei Siri salì contro Ioas e venne in Giuda e a Gerusalemme. Essi misero a morte fra il popolo tutti i capi e inviarono tutto il bottino al re di Damasco.

And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

24 B enché l’esercito dei Siri fosse venuto con un piccolo numero di uomini, tuttavia il Signore diede loro nelle mani un esercito grandissimo, perché quelli avevano abbandonato il Signore, Dio dei loro padri. Così i Siri fecero giustizia di Ioas.

For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Jehovah delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment upon Joash.

25 Q uando questi partirono da lui, lasciandolo in gravi sofferenze, i suoi servitori tramarono contro di lui una congiura, perché egli aveva versato il sangue dei figli del sacerdote Ieoiada, e lo uccisero nel suo letto. Così morì, e fu sepolto nella città di Davide, ma non nelle tombe dei re.

And when they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

26 Q uelli che congiurarono contro di lui furono Zabad, figlio di Simeat, un Ammonita, e Iozabad, figlio di Simrit, una Moabita.

And these are they that conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

27 P er quanto riguarda i suoi figli, il gran numero di tributi impostigli e il restauro della casa di Dio, tali cose si trovano scritte nelle memorie del libro dei re. E Amasia, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
