1 L a saggezza non chiama forse? L’intelligenza non fa udire la sua voce?

Doth not wisdom cry, And understanding put forth her voice?

2 E ssa sta in piedi in cima ai luoghi più elevati, sulla strada, agli incroci;

On the top of high places by the way, Where the paths meet, she standeth;

3 g rida presso le porte della città, all’ingresso, negli androni:

Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, At the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud:

4 « Chiamo voi, o uomini nobili, la mia voce si rivolge ai figli del popolo.

Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of men.

5 I mparate, o semplici, l’accorgimento, e voi, stolti, diventate intelligenti!

O ye simple, understand prudence; And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.

6 A scoltate, perché dirò cose eccellenti, le mie labbra si apriranno per insegnare cose rette.

Hear, for I will speak excellent things; And the opening of my lips shall be right things.

7 I nfatti la mia bocca esprime la verità, le mie labbra detestano l’empietà.

For my mouth shall utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 T utte le parole della mia bocca sono conformi a giustizia, non c’è nulla di ambiguo o di perverso in esse.

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

9 S ono tutte rette per l’uomo intelligente, giuste per quelli che hanno trovato la scienza.

They are all plain to him that understandeth, And right to them that find knowledge.

10 R icevete la mia istruzione anziché l’argento, e la scienza anziché l’oro scelto;

Receive my instruction, and not silver; And knowledge rather than choice gold.

11 p oiché la saggezza vale più delle perle, tutti gli oggetti preziosi non la equivalgono.

For wisdom is better than rubies; And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it.

12 I o, la saggezza, sto con l’accorgimento e ho trovato la scienza della riflessione.

I wisdom have made prudence my dwelling, And find out knowledge and discretion.

13 I l timore del Signore è odiare il male; io odio la superbia, l’arroganza, la via del male e la bocca perversa.

The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the perverse mouth, do I hate.

14 A me appartiene il consiglio e il successo; io sono l’intelligenza, a me appartiene la forza.

Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might.

15 P er mio mezzo regnano i re, e i prìncipi decretano ciò che è giusto.

By me kings reign, And princes decree justice.

16 P er mio mezzo governano i capi, i nobili, tutti i giudici della terra.

By me princes rule, And nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

17 I o amo quelli che mi amano, e quelli che mi cercano mi trovano.

I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me.

18 C on me sono ricchezze e gloria, i beni duraturi e la giustizia.

Riches and honor are with me; Yea, durable wealth and righteousness.

19 I l mio frutto è migliore dell’oro fino, il mio prodotto vale più dell’argento selezionato.

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; And my revenue than choice silver.

20 I o cammino per la via della giustizia, per i sentieri dell’equità,

I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice;

21 p er far ereditare ricchezze a quelli che mi amano e per riempire i loro tesori.

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, And that I may fill their treasuries.

22 « Il Signore mi ebbe con sé al principio dei suoi atti, prima di fare alcuna delle sue opere più antiche.

Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old.

23 F ui stabilita fin dall’eternità, dal principio, prima che la terra fosse.

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, Before the earth was.

24 F ui generata quando non c’erano ancora abissi, quando ancora non c’erano sorgenti rigurgitanti d’acqua.

When there were no depths, I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.

25 F ui generata prima che i monti fossero fondati, prima che esistessero le colline,

Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills was I brought forth;

26 q uand’egli ancora non aveva fatto né la terra né i campi né le prime zolle della terra coltivabile.

While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, Nor the beginning of the dust of the world.

27 Q uand’egli disponeva i cieli io ero là; quando tracciava un circolo sulla superficie dell’abisso,

When he established the heavens, I was there: When he set a circle upon the face of the deep,

28 q uando condensava le nuvole in alto, quando rafforzava le fonti dell’abisso,

When he made firm the skies above, When the fountains of the deep became strong,

29 q uando assegnava al mare il suo limite perché le acque non oltrepassassero il loro confine, quando poneva le fondamenta della terra,

When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth;

30 i o ero presso di lui come un artefice. Ero sempre esuberante di gioia giorno dopo giorno, mi rallegravo in ogni tempo in sua presenza;

Then I was by him, as a master workman; And I was daily his delight, Rejoicing always before him,

31 m i rallegravo nella parte abitabile della sua terra, trovavo la mia gioia tra i figli degli uomini.

Rejoicing in his habitable earth; And my delight was with the sons of men.

32 O ra, figlioli, ascoltatemi; beati quelli che osservano le mie vie!

Now therefore, my sons, hearken unto me; For blessed are they that keep my ways.

33 A scoltate l’istruzione, siate saggi, e non la rifiutate!

Hear instruction, and be wise, And refuse it not.

34 B eato l’uomo che mi ascolta, che veglia ogni giorno alle mie porte, che vigila alla soglia della mia casa!

Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 C hi mi trova infatti trova la vita e ottiene il favore del Signore.

For whoso findeth me findeth life, And shall obtain favor of Jehovah.

36 M a chi pecca contro di me fa torto a se stesso; tutti quelli che mi odiano amano la morte».

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: All they that hate me love death.
