1 N on grida forse la sapienza, e la prudenza non fa sentire la sua voce?

Doth not wisdom cry, And understanding put forth her voice?

2 E ssa sta in piedi in cima alle alture, lungo la strada, agli incroci delle vie;

On the top of high places by the way, Where the paths meet, she standeth;

3 g rida presso le porte, all'ingresso della città, sulla soglia delle porte:

Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, At the coming in at the doors, she crieth aloud:

4 « Mi rivolgo a voi, o uomini, e la mia voce è indirizzata ai figli dell'uomo.

Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of men.

5 I ntendete, o semplici, la prudenza e voi stolti, abbiate un cuore assennato.

O ye simple, understand prudence; And, ye fools, be of an understanding heart.

6 A scoltate, perché parlerò di cose importanti, e le mie labbra si apriranno per dire cose giuste.

Hear, for I will speak excellent things; And the opening of my lips shall be right things.

7 P oiche la mia bocca proclamerà la verità; l'empietà è un abominio alle mie labbra,

For my mouth shall utter truth; And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 T utte le parole della mia bocca sono giuste, in esse non c'è niente di tortuoso e perverso,

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

9 S ono tutte rette per chi ha intendimento e giuste per quelli che hanno trovato la conoscenza,

They are all plain to him that understandeth, And right to them that find knowledge.

10 R icevete il mio ammaestramento e non l'argento, la conoscenza invece dell'oro scelto,

Receive my instruction, and not silver; And knowledge rather than choice gold.

11 p erchè la sapienza vale piú delle perle, e tutte le cose che uno può desiderare non l'eguagliano.

For wisdom is better than rubies; And all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto it.

12 I o, la sapienza, sto con la prudenza e trovo la conoscenza della riflessione.

I wisdom have made prudence my dwelling, And find out knowledge and discretion.

13 I l timore dell'Eterno è odiare il male; io odio la superbia, l'arroganza, la via malvagia e la bocca perversa.

The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil: Pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, And the perverse mouth, do I hate.

14 A me appartiene il consiglio e la vera sapienza; io sono l'intelligenza, a me appartiene la forza.

Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might.

15 P er mio mezzo regnano i re e i principi deliberano la giustizia.

By me kings reign, And princes decree justice.

16 P er mio mezzo governano i capi, i nobili tutti i giudici della terra.

By me princes rule, And nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

17 I o amo quelli che mi amano, e quelli che mi cercano diligentemente mi trovano,

I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me.

18 C on me sono ricchezze e gloria, la ricchezza che dura e la giustizia.

Riches and honor are with me; Yea, durable wealth and righteousness.

19 I l mio frutto è migliore dell'oro, sí, dell'oro fino e il mio prodotto piú dell'argento scelto.

My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; And my revenue than choice silver.

20 I o cammino nella via della giustizia in mezzo ai sentieri dell'equità,

I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice;

21 p er far ereditare la vera ricchezza a quelli che mi amano e per riempire i loro tesori.

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance, And that I may fill their treasuries.

22 L 'Eterno mi possedette al principio della sua via, prima delle sue opere piú antiche.

Jehovah possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old.

23 F ui stabilita dall'eternità, dal principio, prima che la terra fosse.

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, Before the earth was.

24 F ui prodotta quando non c'erano ancora gli abissi, quando non c'erano sorgenti rigurgitanti d'acqua.

When there were no depths, I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.

25 F ui prodotta prima che le fondamenta dei monti fossero consolidate prima delle colline,

Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills was I brought forth;

26 q uando non aveva ancora fatto né la terra né i campi né le prime zolle della terra.

While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, Nor the beginning of the dust of the world.

27 Q uando egli fissava i cieli, io ero là; quando tracciava un cerchio sulla superficie dell'abisso,

When he established the heavens, I was there: When he set a circle upon the face of the deep,

28 q uando rendeva stabili i cieli di sopra, quando rafforzava le fonti dell'abisso,

When he made firm the skies above, When the fountains of the deep became strong,

29 q uando assegnava al mare il suo limite perché le acque non oltrepassassero il suo comando, quando stabiliva le fondamenta della terra,

When he gave to the sea its bound, That the waters should not transgress his commandment, When he marked out the foundations of the earth;

30 I o ero presso di lui come un architetto, ero ogni giorno la sua delizia, rallegrandomi ogni momento davanti a lui

Then I was by him, as a master workman; And I was daily his delight, Rejoicing always before him,

31 m i rallegravo nella parte abitabile del mondo e trovavo il mio diletto con i figli degli uomini.

Rejoicing in his habitable earth; And my delight was with the sons of men.

32 O ra dunque, figli, ascoltatemi; beati quelli che osservano le mie vie!

Now therefore, my sons, hearken unto me; For blessed are they that keep my ways.

33 A scoltate l'ammaestramento e siate saggi, e non respingetelo!

Hear instruction, and be wise, And refuse it not.

34 B eato l'uomo che mi ascolta, vegliando ogni giorno alle mie porte e custodendo gli stipiti delle mie porte.

Blessed is the man that heareth me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 P oiché chi mi trova, trova la vita, e ottiene favore dall'Eterno.

For whoso findeth me findeth life, And shall obtain favor of Jehovah.

36 M a chi pecca contro di me, fa male a se stesso; tutti quelli che mi odiano amano la morte».

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: All they that hate me love death.
