1 P oi uscí di là e venne nella sua patria, e i suoi discepoli lo seguirono.

And he went out from thence; and he cometh into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

2 E , venuto il sabato, si mise ad insegnare nella sinagoga. E molti, udendolo, stupivano e dicevano: «Da dove vengono a costui queste cose? Che sapienza è mai questa che gli è data? E come mai si compiono tali potenti opere per mano sua?

And when the sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, Whence hath this man these things? and, What is the wisdom that is given unto this man, and what mean such mighty works wrought by his hands?

3 N on è costui il falegname, il figlio di Maria, il fratello di Giacomo, di Iose, di Giuda e di Simone? E le sue sorelle non sono qui fra noi?». Ed erano scandalizzati a causa di lui.

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended in him.

4 M a Gesú disse loro: «Nessun profeta è disonorato, se non nella sua patria, fra i suoi parenti e in casa sua».

And Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

5 E non potè fare lí alcuna opera potente, salvo che guarire pochi infermi, imponendo loro le mani.

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

6 E si meravigliava della loro incredulità; e andava in giro per i villaggi, insegnando.

And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages teaching.

7 P oi egli chiamò a sé i dodici e cominciò a mandarli a due a due; e diede loro potere sugli spiriti immondi.

And he calleth unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

8 E ordinò loro che non prendessero nulla per il viaggio, eccetto un bastone soltanto: né sacca né pane né denaro nella cintura;

and he charged them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no bread, no wallet, now money in their purse;

9 e che fossero calzati di sandali e non indossassero due tuniche.

but to go shod with sandals: and, said he, put not on two coats.

10 D isse loro ancora: «Dovunque entrate in una casa, fermatevi lí, finché non partiate da quel luogo.

And he said unto them, Wheresoever ye enter into a house, there abide till ye depart thence.

11 S e poi alcuni non vi ricevono e non vi ascoltano, andando via di là, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi in testimonianza contro di loro. In verità vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio Sodoma e Gomorra saranno trattate con piú tolleranza che quella città».

And whatsoever place shall not receive you, and they hear you not, as ye go forth thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony unto them.

12 C osí partiti, predicavano che la gente si doveva ravvedere;

And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

13 e scacciavano molti demoni e ungevano con olio molti infermi, e li guarivano.

And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

14 O ra il re Erode sentí parlare di Gesú, perché il suo nome era diventato celebre, e diceva: «Quel Giovanni che battezzava è risuscitato dai morti; e perciò le potenze miracolose operano in lui».

And king Herod heard thereof; for his name had become known: and he said, John the Baptizer is risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him.

15 A ltri dicevano: «E' Elia»; ed altri: «E' un profeta, o come uno dei profeti».

But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even as one of the prophets.

16 M a Erode, udito questo, diceva: «Quel Giovanni, che io ho fatto decapitare, è risorto dai morti!».

But Herod, when he heard thereof, said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

17 E rode stesso infatti aveva fatto arrestare Giovanni e l'aveva tenuto legato in carcere a causa di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello, perché egli l'aveva presa per moglie.

For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.

18 G iovanni infatti diceva ad Erode: «Non ti è lecito di avere la moglie di tuo fratello».

For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

19 E d Erodiade gli portava rancore e volentieri l'avrebbe fatto uccidere, ma non poteva.

And Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him; and she could not;

20 E rode infatti temeva Giovanni, sapendolo uomo giusto e santo, e lo proteggeva; e, dopo averlo udito, faceva molte cose e lo ascoltava volentieri.

for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

21 O ra, venuto un giorno propizio, Erode per il suo compleanno offrí un banchetto ai suoi grandi, ai comandanti e ai notabili della Galilea.

And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

22 L a figlia di Erodiade stessa entrò e danzò, e piacque ad Erode e a coloro che erano a tavola con lui; allora il re disse alla fanciulla: «Domandami tutto ciò che vuoi e io te lo darò».

and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23 E le giurò: «Qualsiasi cosa mi chiederai, te la darò, fino alla metà del mio regno!».

And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24 E lla uscí, e disse a sua madre: «Che cosa devo chiedere?». Quella rispose: «La testa di Giovanni Battista».

And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

25 E d ella, ritornata subito dal re, gli fece in fretta la richiesta, dicendo: «Io desidero che tu mi dia immediatamente, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni Battista».

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

26 E il re, sebbene ne fosse molto rattristato, a motivo del giuramento e per rispetto dei convitati, non volle opporle un rifiuto.

And the king was exceeding sorry; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat, he would not reject her.

27 C osí il re mandò subito una guardia, con l'ordine di portargli la testa di Giovanni.

And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 E quegli andò, lo decapitò in prigione e portò la sua testa su un piatto e la diede alla fanciulla, e la fanciulla la diede a sua madre.

and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.

29 E quando i suoi discepoli udirono ciò, vennero, presero il suo corpo e lo posero in un sepolcro.

And when his disciples heard thereof, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

30 O ra gli apostoli si radunarono intorno a Gesú, e gli riferirono tutto quello che avevano fatto ed insegnato.

And the apostles gather themselves together unto Jesus; and they told him all things, whatsoever they had done, and whatsoever they had taught.

31 E d egli disse loro: «Venite in disparte in un luogo solitario e riposatevi un po'». Poichè era tanta la gente che andava e veniva, che essi non avevano neppure il tempo di mangiare.

And he saith unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

32 P artirono quindi in barca verso un luogo solitario e appartato.

And they went away in the boat to a desert place apart.

33 L a folla però li vide partire, e molti lo riconobbero, e da tutte le città accorsero là a piedi ed arrivarono prima di loro, e si strinsero intorno a lui.

And the people saw them going, and many knew them, and they ran together there on foot from all the cities, and outwent them.

34 E Gesú, sbarcato, vide una grande folla e ne ebbe compassione, perché erano come pecore senza pastore, e prese a insegnare loro molte cose.

And he came forth and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

35 E d essendo già tardi, i suoi discepoli gli si avvicinarono e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto, ed è già tardi.

And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, The place is desert, and the day is now far spent;

36 L icenzia questa gente perché se ne vada nelle campagne e nei villaggi all'intorno a comprarsi del pane, perché non ha nulla da mangiare».

send them away, that they may go into the country and villages round about, and buy themselves somewhat to eat.

37 M a egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Date voi a loro da mangiare». Ed essi gli dissero: «Dobbiamo andare noi a comperare del pane per duecento denari e dare loro da mangiare?».

But he answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred shillings' worth of bread, and give them to eat?

38 E d egli disse loro: «Quanti pani avete? Andate a vedere». Ed essi, accertatisi, dissero: «Cinque pani e due pesci».

And he saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

39 A llora egli ordinò loro di farli accomodare tutti, per gruppi, sull'erba verde.

And he commanded them that all should sit down by companies upon the green grass.

40 C osí essi si sedettero in gruppi di cento e di cinquanta.

And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 P oi egli prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse, quindi spezzò i pani e li diede ai suoi discepoli, perché li distribuissero loro; e divise pure i due pesci fra tutti.

And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

42 M angiarono tutti a sazietà.

And they all ate, and were filled.

43 E raccolsero dodici ceste piene di pezzi di pane e di resti dei pesci.

And they took up broken pieces, twelve basketfuls, and also of the fishes.

44 O r coloro che avevano mangiato di quei pani erano cinquemila uomini.

And they that ate the loaves were five thousand men.

45 S ubito dopo Gesú costrinse i suoi discepoli a salire nella barca e precederlo all'altra riva verso Betsaida, mentre egli licenziava la folla.

And straightway he constrained his disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side to Bethsaida, while he himself sendeth the multitude away.

46 A ppena l'ebbe congedata, salí sul monte a pregare.

And after he had taken leave of them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

47 F attosi sera, la barca era in mezzo al mare ed egli era a terra tutto solo.

And when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 E , vedendo i discepoli affaticarsi a remare, perché avevano il vento contrario, verso la quarta vigilia della notte, egli andò verso loro camminando sul mare, e voleva oltrepassarli.

And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them:

49 M a essi, vedendolo camminare sul mare, pensavano che fosse un fantasma e si misero a gridare

but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;

50 p erché lo avevano visto tutti e si erano spaventati, ma egli subito parlò loro e disse: «Fatevi animo, sono io, non temete!».

for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

51 P oi salí con loro sulla barca e il vento si calmò, ed essi erano enormemente stupiti in se stessi e si meravigliarono,

And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves;

52 p erché non avevano capito il fatto dei pani, essendo il loro cuore indurito.

for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

53 C ompiuta la traversata, giunsero nella contrada di Gennesaret e vi approdarono.

And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

54 E , scesi dalla barca, subito la gente lo riconobbe;

And when they were come out of the boat, straightway the people knew him,

55 e , percorrendo per tutta quella regione all'intorno, incominciò a portare i malati sui lettucci, ovunque sentiva che si trovasse

and ran round about that whole region, and began to carry about on their beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

56 e dovunque egli giungeva, in villaggi, città o borgate, la gente metteva gli infermi sulle piazze e lo pregava di poter toccare almeno il lembo del suo vestito, e tutti quelli che lo toccavano erano guariti.

And wheresoever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
