1 O ra io dico che per tutto il tempo che l'erede è minorenne non è affatto differente dal servo, benché sia signore di tutto,

But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a bondservant though he is lord of all;

2 m a egli è sotto tutori e amministratori fino al tempo prestabilito dal padre.

but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed of the father.

3 C osí anche noi, mentre eravamo minorenni, eravamo tenuti in servitú sotto gli elementi del mondo,

So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the rudiments of the world:

4 m a, quando è venuto il compimento del tempo, Dio ha mandato suo Figlio, nato da donna, sottoposto alla legge,

but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

5 p erché riscattasse quelli che erano sotto la legge, affinché noi ricevessimo l'adozione.

that he might redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

6 O ra perché voi siete figli, Dio ha mandato lo Spirito del Figlio suo nei vostri cuori che grida: «Abba, Padre»,

And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 P erciò tu non sei piú servo, ma figlio; e se sei figlio, sei anche erede di Dio per mezzo di Cristo.

So that thou art no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

8 M a allora, non conoscendo Dio, servivate a coloro che per natura non sono dèi;

Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

9 o ra invece, avendo conosciuto Dio, anzi essendo piuttosto stati conosciuti da Dio, come mai vi rivolgete di nuovo ai deboli e poveri elementi, ai quali desiderate di essere di nuovo asserviti?

but now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereunto ye desire to be in bondage over again?

10 V oi osservate giorni, mesi, stagioni e anni.

Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years.

11 I o temo di essermi affaticato invano per voi.

I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain.

12 S iate come me, perché anch'io sono come voi; fratelli, ve ne prego, voi non mi avete fatto alcun torto.

I beseech you, brethren, become as I am, for I also am become as ye are. Ye did me no wrong:

13 O ra voi sapete come nel passato io vi evangelizzai a causa di una infermità della carne;

but ye know that because of an infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you the first time:

14 e voi non disprezzaste né aveste a schifo la prova che era nella mia carne ma mi accoglieste come un angelo di Dio, come Cristo Gesú stesso.

and that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

15 C os'è dunque avvenuto della vostra allegrezza? Poiché vi rendo testimonianza che, se fosse stato possibile, vi sareste cavati gli occhi e me li avreste dati.

Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

16 S ono dunque diventato vostro nemico, dicendovi la verità?

So then am I become your enemy, by telling you the truth?

17 Q uelli sono zelanti per voi, ma non per fini onesti; anzi essi vi vogliono separare affinché siate zelanti per loro.

They zealously seek you in no good way; nay, they desire to shut you out, that ye may seek them.

18 O r è buona cosa essere sempre zelanti nel bene, e non solo quando sono presente fra voi.

But it is good to be zealously sought in a good matter at all times, and not only when I am present with you.

19 F igli miei, che io partorisco di nuovo, finché Cristo sia formato in voi!

My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you--

20 D esidererei ora essere presente fra voi e cambiare il tono della mia voce perché sono perplesso di voi.

but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone; for I am perplexed about you.

21 D itemi, voi che volete essere sotto la legge, non date ascolto alla legge?

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

22 I nfatti sta scritto che Abrahamo ebbe due figli: uno dalla serva e uno dalla libera.

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the freewoman.

23 O r quello che nacque dalla serva fu generato secondo la carne, ma quello che nacque dalla libera fu generato in virtú della promessa.

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

24 T ali cose hanno un senso allegorico, perché queste due donne sono due patti: uno dal monte Sinai che genera a schiavitú, ed è Agar.

Which things contain an allegory: for these women are two covenants; one from mount Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, which is Hagar.

25 O r Agar è il monte Sinai in Arabia e corrisponde alla Gerusalemme del tempo presente; ed essa è schiava con i suoi figli.

Now this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia and answereth to the Jerusalem that now is: for she is in bondage with her children.

26 I nvece la Gerusalemme di sopra è libera ed è la madre di noi tutti.

But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is our mother.

27 I nfatti sta scritto: «Rallegrati, o sterile che non partorisci! Prorompi e grida, tu che non senti doglie di parto, perché i figli dell'abbandonata saranno piú numerosi di quelli di colei che aveva marito».

For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; Break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: For more are the children of the desolate than of her that hath the husband.

28 O ra noi, fratelli, alla maniera di Isacco, siamo figli della promessa.

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

29 M a, come allora colui che era generato secondo la carne perseguitava colui che era generato secondo lo Spirito, cosí avviene al presente.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so also it is now.

30 M a che dice la Scrittura? «Caccia via la schiava e suo figlio, perché il figlio della schiava non sarà erede col figlio della libera».

Howbeit what saith the scripture? Cast out the handmaid and her son: for the son of the handmaid shall not inherit with the son of the freewoman.

31 C osí dunque, fratelli, noi non siamo figli della schiava ma della libera.

Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.
