1 I sole, ascoltatemi, e prestate attenzione, o popoli lontani. L'Eterno mi ha chiamato fin dal grembo materno, ha menzionato il mio nome fin dalle viscere di mia madre.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye peoples, from far: Jehovah hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name:

2 H a reso la mia bocca come una spada tagliente, mi ha nascosto nell'ombra della sua mano, mi ha reso una freccia appuntita, mi ha riposto nella sua faretra.

and he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me: and he hath made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he kept me close:

3 M i ha detto: «Tu sei il mio servo, Israele, in cui sarò glorificato».

and he said unto me, Thou art my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

4 M a io dicevo: «Invano ho faticato, per nulla e inutilmente ho speso la mia forza; certamente però il mio diritto è presso l'Eterno e la mia ricompensa presso il mio DIO».

But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely the justice due to me is with Jehovah, and my recompense with my God.

5 E ora dice l'Eterno che mi ha formato fin dal grembo materno per essere suo servo, per ricondurre a lui Giacobbe e per radunare intorno a lui Israele (io sono onorato agli occhi dell'Eterno, e il mio DIO è la mia forza).

And now saith Jehovah that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered unto him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Jehovah, and my God is become my strength);

6 E gli dice: «E' troppo poco che tu sia mio servo per rialzare le tribú di Giacobbe e per ricondurre gli scampati d'Israele. Ti ho stabilito come la luce delle nazioni, perché tu sia la mia salvezza fino alle estremità della terra».

yea, he saith, It is too light a thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

7 C osí dice l'Eterno, il Redentore d'Israele, il suo Santo, a colui che è disprezzato dagli uomini, al detestato dalla nazione, al servo dei potenti: «I re vedranno e si leveranno, i principi si prostreranno, a causa dell'Eterno che è fedele, il Santo d'Israele, che ti ha scelto».

Thus saith Jehovah, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of Jehovah that is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee.

8 C osí dice l'Eterno: «Nel tempo della grazia io ti ho esaudito e nel giorno della salvezza ti ho aiutato, ti preserverò e ti farò l'alleanza del popolo, per far risorgere il paese, per rimetterli in possesso delle eredità devastate,

Thus saith Jehovah, In an acceptable time have I answered thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages:

9 p er dire ai prigionieri: "Uscite" e a quelli che sono nelle tenebre: "Mostratevi". Essi pascoleranno lungo le strade e su tutte le alture desolate avranno i loro pascoli.

saying to them that are bound, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and on all bare heights shall be their pasture.

10 N on avranno fame né sete, non li colpirà piú né caldo né sole, perché colui che ha pietà di loro li guiderà e li condurrà alle sorgenti d'acqua.

They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them will lead them, even by springs of water will he guide them.

11 T rasformerò tutti i miei monti in strade, e le mie strade maestre saranno elevate.

And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

12 E cco, questi vengono da lontano; ecco, quelli dal nord e dall'est, e quelli dal paese di Sinim».

Lo, these shall come from far; and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

13 G iubilate, o cieli, rallegrati, o terra, e prorompete in grida di gioia, o monti, perché l'Eterno consola il suo popolo e ha compassione dei suoi afflitti.

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for Jehovah hath comforted his people, and will have compassion upon his afflicted.

14 M a Sion ha detto: «L'Eterno mi ha abbandonato, il Signore mi ha dimenticato».

But Zion said, Jehovah hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me.

15 « Può una donna dimenticare il bambino lattante e non aver compassione del figlio delle sue viscere? Anche se esse dovessero dimenticare, io non ti dimenticherò.

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee.

16 E cco, io ti ho scolpita sulle palme delle mie mani, le tue mura mi stanno sempre davanti.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

17 I tuoi figli si affretteranno, i tuoi distruttori e i tuoi devastatori si allontaneranno da te.

Thy children make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth from thee.

18 A lza i tuoi occhi tutt'intorno e guarda. Tutti costoro si radunano e vengono a te, Com'è vero che io vivo, dice l'Eterno, ti rivestirai di tutti loro come di un ornamento e li legherai su di te come fa una sposa.

Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith Jehovah, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all as with an ornament, and gird thyself with them, like a bride.

19 P erciò i tuoi luoghi deserti e desolati e il tuo paese una volta colpito dalla distruzione saranno ora troppo angusti per gli abitanti, mentre quelli che ti divoravano saranno ben lontani.

For, as for thy waste and thy desolate places, and thy land that hath been destroyed, surely now shalt thou be too strait for the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

20 I figli che avrai dopo quelli che hai perso, ti diranno all'orecchio: "Questo posto è troppo angusto per me; fammi piú spazio, perché mi possa stabilire

The children of thy bereavement shall yet say in thine ears, The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.

21 A llora tu dirai in cuor tuo: "Chi ha generato costoro? Io ero infatti stata privata dei miei figli, ero sterile, esule e scacciata di qui e di là. Questi chi li ha allevati? Ecco, io ero rimasta sola, e questi dov'erano?"».

Then shalt thou say in thy heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have been bereaved of my children, and am solitary, an exile, and wandering to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where were they?

22 C osí dice il Signore, l'Eterno: «Ecco io leverò la mia mano verso le nazioni, alzerò la mia bandiera verso i popoli, allora riporteranno i tuoi figli in braccio, e le tue figlie saranno portate sulle spalle.

Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and set up my ensign to the peoples; and they shall bring thy sons in their bosom, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 I re saranno i tuoi padri adottivi e le loro regine saranno le tue nutrici, essi si prostreranno davanti a te con la faccia a terra e leccheranno la polvere dei tuoi piedi; cosí saprai che io sono l'Eterno e che coloro che sperano in me non saranno svergognati.

And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah; and they that wait for me shall not be put to shame.

24 S i potrà forse strappare la preda al potente o liberare il prigioniero giusto?».

Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives be delivered?

25 S í, cosí dice l'Eterno: «Anche il prigioniero sarà portato via e la preda del tiranno sarà ricuperata. Io stesso combatterò con chi combatte con te e salverò i tuoi figli.

But thus saith Jehovah, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 F arò mangiare ai tuoi oppressori la loro stessa carne, e si inebrieranno col loro stesso sangue come col mosto. Allora ogni carne riconoscerà che io, l'Eterno, sono il tuo Salvatore, il tuo Redentore, il Potente di Giacobbe».

And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I, Jehovah, am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
