1 Q uando il re cananeo di Arad, che abitava nel Neghev, udì che Israele veniva per la via di Atharim, combattè contro Israele e fece alcuni prigionieri.

And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

2 A llora Israele fece un voto all'Eterno e disse: «Se tu mi darai nelle mani questo popolo, distruggerò completamente le loro città».

And Israel vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 L 'Eterno diede ascolto alla voce d'Israele e gli diede nelle mani i Cananei; ed essi li distrussero completamente con le loro città, e quel luogo fu chiamato Hormah.

And Jehovah hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

4 P oi i figli d'Israele partirono dal monte Hor, dirigendosi verso il Mar Rosso, per fare il giro del paese di Edom; e il popolo si scoraggiò a motivo del viaggio.

And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 I l popolo quindi parlò contro Dio e contro Mosè, dicendo: «Perché ci avete fatti uscire dall'Egitto per farci morire in questo deserto? Poiché qui non c'è né pane né acqua e siamo nauseati di questo miserabile cibo».

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 A llora l'Eterno mandò fra il popolo dei serpenti ardenti i quali mordevano la gente, e molti Israeliti morirono.

And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 C osì il popolo venne da Mosè e disse: «Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo parlato contro l'Eterno e contro di te; prega l'Eterno che allontani da noi questi serpenti». E Mosè pregò per il popolo.

And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 L 'Eterno disse quindi a Mosè: «Fa' un serpente ardente e mettilo sopra un'asta; e avverrà che chiunque sarà morso e lo guarderà, vivrà».

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.

9 M osè fece allora un serpente di bronzo e lo mise sopra un'asta; e avveniva che, quando un serpente mordeva qualcuno, se questi guardava il serpente di bronzo, viveva.

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 P oi i figli d'Israele partirono e si accamparono a Oboth.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.

11 P artiti da Oboth, si accamparono a Ije-Abarim nel deserto che è di fronte a Moab, dal lato dove sorge il sole.

And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 D i là partirono e si accamparono nella valle di Zered.

From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

13 P oi partirono di là e si accamparono dall'altro lato dell'Arnon, che scorre nel deserto e proviene dai confini degli Amorei: Poiché l'Arnon fa da confine a Moab, fra Moab e gli Amorei.

From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 P er questo è detto nel Libro delle Guerre dell'Eterno: «Vaheb in Sufah, le valli dell'Arnon

Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, And the valleys of the Arnon,

15 e il pendio delle valli che si estende verso le dimore di Ar e si appoggia alla frontiera di Moab».

And the slope of the valleys That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar, And leaneth upon the border of Moab.

16 E di là andarono a Beer, che è il pozzo di cui l'Eterno aveva detto a Mosè: «Raduna il popolo e io gli darò dell'acqua».

And from thence they journeyed to Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 A llora Israele cantò questo cantico: «Sgorga, o pozzo! Cantate a lui!

Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 I l pozzo la cui acqua i principi hanno cercato che i nobili del popolo hanno scavato alla parola del legislatore, coi loro bastoni». Poi dal deserto andarono a Mattanah;

The well, which the princes digged, Which the nobles of the people delved, With the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah;

19 d a Mattanah a Nahaliel; e da Nahaliel a Bamoth,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

20 e da Bamoth nella valle che è nella campagna di Moab, verso l'altura del Pisgah che domina il deserto.

and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.

21 I sraele quindi mandò ambasciatori a Sihon, re degli Amorei, per dirgli:

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 « Lasciami passare per il tuo paese; noi non entreremo nei campi o nelle vigne, non berremo l'acqua dei pozzi; seguiremo la via Regia finche avremo oltrepassato i tuoi confini».

Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.

23 M a Sihon non permise a Israele di passare per il suo territorio; anzi Sihon radunò tutta la sua gente e uscì contro Israele nel deserto; giunse a Jahats e combattè contro Israele.

And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

24 I sraele lo sconfisse passandolo a fil di spada, e conquistò il suo paese dall'Arnon fino allo Jabbock, fino ai confini dei figli di Ammon, perché la frontiera dei figli di Ammon era forte.

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 C osì Israele prese tutte quelle città e abitò in tutte le città degli Amorei in Heshbon e in tutte le città del suo territorio,

And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof.

26 p oiché Heshbon era la città di Sihon, re degli Amorei il quale aveva mosso guerra al precedente re di Moab e gli aveva tolto di mano tutto il suo paese fino all'Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.

27 P er questo dicono i poeti: «Venite a Heshbon! la città di Sihon sia ricostruita e fortificata!

Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come ye to Heshbon; Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

28 P oiché un fuoco è uscito da Heshbon, una fiamma dalla città di Sihon; essa ha divorato Ar di Moab, i padroni delle alture dell'Arnon.

For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It hath devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 G uai a te, o Moab! Sei perduto, o popolo di Kemosh! Egli ha reso i suoi figli fuggiaschi, e ha dato le sue figlie come schiave a Sihon, re degli Amorei.

Woe to thee, Moab! Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: He hath given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 M a noi li abbiamo colpiti con frecce; Heshbon è distrutta fino a Dibon. Abbiamo devastato tutto fino a Nofah, che è presso Medeba».

We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, And we have laid waste even unto Nophah, Which reacheth unto Medeba.

31 C osì Israele si stabilì nel paese degli Amorei.

Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 P oi Mosè mandò a esplorare Jaazer, e gli Israeliti presero le città del suo territorio e ne scacciarono gli Amorei che vi si trovavano.

And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 P oi cambiarono direzione e salirono per la strada di Bashan; e Og, re di Bashan, uscì contro di loro con tutta la sua gente per dar loro battaglia a Edrei.

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

34 M a l'Eterno disse a Mosè: «Non aver paura di lui, perché io lo do nelle tue mani con tutta la sua gente e il suo paese; trattalo come hai trattato Sihon, re degli Amorei che abitava a Heshbon.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

35 C osì gli Israeliti batterono lui, i suoi figli e tutto il suo popolo, finchè non gli rimase più alcun superstite, e si impadronirono del suo paese.

So they smote him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
