1 D opo queste cose, la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta in visione ad Abramo, dicendo: «Non temere o Abramo, io sono il tuo scudo, e la tua ricompensa sarà grandissima».

After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 M a Abramo disse: Signore, Eterno, che mi darai, perché sono senza figli e l'erede della mia casa è Eliezer di Damasco?».

And Abram said, O Lord Jehovah, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?

3 P oi Abramo soggiunse: «tu non mi hai dato alcuna discendenza; Ora ecco, uno nato in casa mia sarà mio erede».

And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4 A llora la parola dell'Eterno gli fu rivolta, dicendo: Questi non sarà tuo erede; ma colui che uscirà dalle tue viscere sarà tuo erede».

And, behold, the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying, This man shall not be thine heir; But he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

5 P oi lo condusse fuori e gli disse: «Mira il cielo e conta le stelle, se le puoi contare», quindi aggiunse: «Così sarà la tua discendenza».

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

6 E d egli credette all'Eterno, che glielo mise in conto di giustizia.

And he believed in Jehovah; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.

7 P oi l'Eterno gli disse: «Io sono l'Eterno che ti ho fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei, per darti questo paese in eredità».

And he said unto him, I am Jehovah that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

8 E Abramo chiese: «Signore, Eterno da che cosa posso io sapere che l'avrò in eredità?».

And he said, O Lord Jehovah, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

9 A llora l'Eterno gli disse: «Portami una giovenca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, un montone di tre anni, una tortora e un piccione giovane».

And he said unto him, Take me a heifer three years old, and a she-goat three years old, and a ram three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.

10 A llora Abramo gli portò tutti questi animali, li divise in due e pose ciascuna metà di fronte all'altra; ma non divise gli uccelli.

And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over against the other: but the birds divided he not.

11 O ra alcuni uccelli rapaci calarono sulle bestie morte ma Abramo li scacciò.

And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

12 V erso il tramontare del sole, un profondo sonno cadde su Abramo; ed ecco, uno spavento una oscurità profonda caddero su di lui.

And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

13 A llora l'Eterno disse ad Abramo: «Sappi per certo che i tuoi discendenti dimoreranno come stranieri in un paese che non sarà loro, e vi saranno schiavi e saranno oppressi per quattrocento anni.

And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

14 M a io giudicherò la nazione di cui saranno stati servi; dopo questo, essi usciranno con grandi ricchezze.

and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

15 Q uanto a te, te ne andrai in pace presso i tuoi padri, e sarai sepolto dopo una bella vecchiaia.

But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16 M a alla quarta generazione essi torneranno qui, perché l'iniquità degli Amorei non è ancora giunta al colmo».

And in the fourth generation they shall come hither again; for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.

17 O ra come il sole si fu coricato e scesero le tenebre, ecco una fornace fumante ed una torcia di fuoco passare in mezzo agli animali divisi.

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces.

18 I n quel giorno l'Eterno fece un patto con Abramo dicendo: «Io do alla tua discendenza questo paese, dal torrente d'Egitto al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate:

In that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

19 i Kenei i Kenizei, i Kadmonei,

the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,

20 g li Hittei, i Perezei, i Refei,

and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,

21 g li Amorei, i Cananei, i Ghirgasei e i Gebusei».

and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.
