1 G iosia aveva otto anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem.

2 E gli fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno e seguí le vie di Davide, suo padre, senza deviare né a destra né a sinistra.

And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and walked in the ways of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 N ell'ottavo anno del suo regno, quando era ancora un ragazzo, cominciò a cercare il DIO di Davide, suo padre, e nel dodicesimo anno cominciò a purificare Giuda e Gerusalemme dagli alti luoghi, dagli Ascerim, dalle immagini scolpite e dalle immagini di metallo fuso.

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherim, and the graven images, and the molten images.

4 D avanti a lui furono demoliti gli altari dei Baal, inoltre abbattè gli altari d'incenso che vi erano sopra, e frantumò gli Ascerim, le immagini scolpite e le immagini di metallo fuso e le ridusse in polvere, che sparse sui sepolcri di coloro che avevano offerto loro sacrifici.

And they brake down the altars of the Baalim in his presence; and the sun-images that were on high above them he hewed down; and the Asherim, and the graven images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

5 P oi bruciò le ossa dei sacerdoti sui loro altari, e cosí purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme.

And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem.

6 L o stesso fece nelle città di Manasse, di Efraim e di Simeone fino a Neftali, con le loro scuri, tutt'intorno.

And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, in their ruins round about.

7 C osí egli demolí gli altari e gli Ascerim, ridusse in polvere le immagini scolpite e abbattè tutti gli altari d'incenso in tutto il paese d'Israele, poi tornò a Gerusalemme.

And he brake down the altars, and beat the Asherim and the graven images into powder, and hewed down all the sun-images throughout all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

8 N ell'anno diciottesimo del suo regno dopo aver purificato il paese e il tempio, mandò Shafan figlio di Atsaliah, Maaseiah governatore della città e Joah figlio di Joahaz, l'archivista, per restaurare la casa dell'Eterno, il suo DIO.

Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of Jehovah his God.

9 E ssi si recarono dal sommo sacerdote Hilkiah e consegnarono il denaro che era stato portato nella casa di DIO, che i Leviti, portinai avevano raccolto da Manasse, da Efraim, da tutto il resto d'Israele, da tutto Giuda e Beniamino e dagli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

And they came to Hilkiah the high priest, and delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10 Q uindi lo consegnarono nelle mani dei lavoratori incaricati della sorveglianza della casa dell'Eterno, i quali lo diedero agli operai che lavoravano nella casa dell'Eterno per riparare e restaurare il tempio.

And they delivered it into the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and the workmen that wrought in the house of Jehovah gave it to mend and repair the house;

11 L o consegnarono ai falegnami e ai costruttori per acquistare pietre squadrate e legname per le armature e le travature delle case che i re di Giuda avevano distrutto.

even to the carpenters and to the builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 Q uegli uomini facevano il lavoro con fedeltà. I sorveglianti loro preposti erano Jahath e Obadiah, Leviti dei figli di Merari, e Zaccaria e Meshullam dei figli di Kehath, e tutti quelli dei Leviti che erano esperti in strumenti musicali.

And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and others of the Levites, all that were skilful with instruments of music.

13 Q uesti sorvegliavano pure i portatori di pesi e dirigevano tutti quelli che eseguivano lavori di qualsiasi genere; inoltre alcuni Leviti erano scribi, ispettori e portinai.

Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and set forward all that did the work in every manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

14 M entre si prelevava il denaro che era stato portato nella casa dell'Eterno, il sacerdote Hilkiah trovò il libro della Legge dell'Eterno, data per mezzo di Mosè.

And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of Jehovah, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of Jehovah given by Moses.

15 H ilkiah prese allora la parola e disse al segretario Shafan: «Ho trovato nella casa dell'Eterno il libro della legge». Quindi Hilkiah diede il libro a Shafan.

And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

16 S hafan portò il libro al re, a cui per di piú riferí e disse: «I tuoi servi stanno facendo tutto ciò che è stato loro ordinato.

And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they are doing.

17 E ssi hanno raccolto il denaro trovato nella casa dell'Eterno e l'hanno consegnato nelle mani dei sorveglianti e degli operai».

And they have emptied out the money that was found in the house of Jehovah, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.

18 S hafan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: «Il sacerdote Hilkiah mi ha dato un libro». Quindi Shafan lo lesse in presenza del re.

And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read therein before the king.

19 O r avvenne che, quando il re udí le parole della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

20 P oi il re diede quest'ordine a Hilkiah, ad Ahikam figlio di Shafan, ad Abdon figlio di Mikah, a Shafan il segretario e ad Asaiah servo del re, dicendo:

And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying,

21 « Andate a consultare l'Eterno per me e per quelli che sono rimasti in Israele e in Giuda, circa le parole del libro, che è stato trovato; grande infatti è l'ira dell'Eterno che si è riversata su di noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno osservato la parola dell'Eterno, agendo interamente secondo quanto è scritto in questo libro».

Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Jehovah, to do according unto all that is written in this book.

22 C osí Hilkiah e quelli che il re aveva designato andarono dalla profetessa Huldah, moglie di Shallum, figlio di Tokhath, figlio di Hasrah, il guardarobiere; (essa abitava a Gerusalemme nel secondo quartiere), e le parlarono in merito a ciò.

So Hilkiah, and they whom the king had commanded, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter;) and they spake to her to that effect.

23 E lla rispose loro: «Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: Riferite a colui che vi ha mandati da me:

And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me,

24 C osì dice l'Eterno: "Ecco, io farò venire una sciagura su questo luogo e sui suoi abitanti, tutte le maledizioni che sono scritte nel libro, che hanno letto davanti al re di Giuda.

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah.

25 P oiché mi hanno abbandonato e hanno offerto incenso ad altri dèi per provocarmi ad ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani, la mia ira si riverserà su questo luogo e non si estinguerà".

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore is my wrath poured out upon this place, and it shall not be quenched.

26 I nvece al re di Giuda che vi ha mandati a consultare l'Eterno, riferite questo: Cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, circa le parole che hai udito:

But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard,

27 P oiché il tuo cuore si è intenerito, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a DIO, udendo le sue parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, ti sei umiliato davanti a me, ti sei stracciato le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch'io ti ho ascoltato", dice l'Eterno.

because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and hast humbled thyself before me, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah.

28 " Ecco, io ti riunirò ai tuoi padri, e sarai deposto in pace nel tuo sepolcro; i tuoi occhi non vedranno tutto il male che io farò venire su questo luogo e sui suoi abitanti"». Quelli riferirono il messaggio al re.

Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof. And they brought back word to the king.

29 A llora il re mandò a far radunare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 I l re salí quindi alla casa dell'Eterno con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti, i Leviti, e tutto il popolo, dal piú piccolo al piú grande, e lesse alla loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, che era stato trovato nella casa dell'Eterno.

And the king went up to the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, both great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of Jehovah.

31 P oi il re, stando in piedi sul palco fece un patto davanti all'Eterno, impegnandosi a seguire l'Eterno e a osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e i suoi statuti con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima, per mettere in pratica le parole del patto scritte in quel libro.

And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book.

32 E vi fece aderire tutti quelli che si trovavano a Gerusalemme e in Beniamino; gli abitanti di Gerusalemme agirono in conformità al patto di DIO, il DIO dei loro padri.

And he caused all that were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 C osí Giosia fece sparire tutte le abominazioni da tutti i paesi che appartenevano ai figli d'Israele e costrinse tutti quelli che si trovavano in Israele a servire l'Eterno, il loro DIO. Durante tutta la sua vita essi non smisero di seguire l'Eterno, il DIO dei loro padri.

And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Jehovah their God. All his days they departed not from following Jehovah, the God of their fathers.
