1 I n quel giorno Debora cantò questo cantico con Barak, figlio di Abinoam, dicendo:

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

2 « Poiché i capi hanno preso il comando in Israele, poiché il popolo si è offerto spontaneamente, benedite l'Eterno!

For that the leaders took the lead in Israel, For that the people offered themselves willingly, Bless ye Jehovah.

3 A scoltate, o re! Porgete l'orecchio, o principi! lo, proprio io, canterò all'Eterno, canterò le lodi dell'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele.

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto Jehovah; I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

4 O Eterno quando uscisti da Seir, quando avanzasti dai campi di Edom, la terra tremò e i cieli stillarono; si, le nubi stillarono acqua.

Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir, When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water.

5 I monti si sciolsero davanti all'Eterno il Sinai stesso tremò davanti all'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele!

The mountains quaked at the presence of Jehovah, Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

6 A i giorni di Shamgar, figlio di Anath, ai giorni di Jael, le strade erano deserte, e i viandanti seguivano sentieri tortuosi.

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, And the travellers walked through byways.

7 M ancavano i capi in Israele; si, mancavano, finché non sorsi io, Debora, sorsi come madre in Israele.

The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that I Deborah arose, That I arose a mother in Israel.

8 S ceglievano nuovi dèi, e la guerra era alle porte. Non si vedeva neppure uno scudo o una lancia, fra quarantamila uomini d'Israele.

They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates: Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel?

9 I l mio cuore va ai condottieri d'Israele, che si offersero spontaneamente fra il popolo. Benedite l'Eterno!

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye Jehovah.

10 V oi che cavalcate asine bianche, voi che sedete su ricchi tappeti e voi che camminate per le vie, cantate!

Tell of it, ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich carpets, And ye that walk by the way.

11 L ungi dalle grida degli arcieri tra gli abbeveratoi, celebrino le opere giuste dell'Eterno, le opere giuste per i suoi capi in Israele! Allora il popolo dell'Eterno discese alle porte.

Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, Even the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. Then the people of Jehovah went down to the gates.

12 D estati, destati, o Debora! Destati, intona un canto! Levati, o Barak, e conduci via i tuoi prigionieri o figlio di Abinoam!

Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and lead away thy captives, thou son of Abinoam.

13 A llora fece governare il residuo sui nobili del popolo, l'Eterno fece governare me fra i potenti.

Then came down a remnant of the nobles and the people; Jehovah came down for me against the mighty.

14 D a Efraim vennero quelli che avevano le radici in Amalek; al tuo seguito, Beniamino, fra le tue genti; da Makir scesero dei capi, e da Zabulon quelli che portano il bastone del comando.

Out of Ephraim came down they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal's staff.

15 I principi di Issacar vennero con Debora; come Issacar, così Barak; essi si slanciarono nella valle sulle sue orme. Fra le divisioni di Ruben, grandi furono le risoluzioni del cuore!

And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.

16 P erché sei tu rimasto fra i chiusi ad ascoltare il flauto dei pastori? Fra le divisioni di Ruben, grandi furono le liberazioni del cuore!

Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.

17 G alaad si è fermato al di là del Giordano; e perché Dan è rimasto sulle navi? Ascer si è stabilito presso il lido del mare ed è rimasto nei suoi porti.

Gilead abode beyond the Jordan: And Dan, why did he remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, And abode by his creeks.

18 Z abulon è un popolo che ha messo in pericolo la sua vita fino alla morte, e anche Neftali sulle alture della campagna.

Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

19 I re vennero e combatterono; allora combatterono i re di Canaan a Taanach presso le acque di Meghiddo; ma non riportarono alcun bottino d'argento.

The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan. In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo: They took no gain of money.

20 D al cielo le stelle combatterono, dai loro percorsi combatterono contro Sisera.

From heaven fought the stars, From their courses they fought against Sisera.

21 I l torrente Kishon li travolse, l'antico torrente, il torrente Kishon. Anima mia, procedi con forza!

The river Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

22 A llora gli zoccoli dei cavalli battevano con forza al galoppo, al galoppo dei loro destrieri.

Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.

23 " Maledite Meroz", disse l'Angelo dell'Eterno, "maledite, maledite i suoi abitanti, perché non vennero in aiuto dell'Eterno, in aiuto dell'Eterno in mezzo ai suoi prodi!".

Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of Jehovah. Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah against the mighty.

24 B enedetta sia fra le donne Jael moglie di Heber, il Keneo! Sia benedetta fra le donne che abitano nelle tende!

Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

25 E gli chiese acqua, e lei gli diede latte; in una coppa da principi gli offerse della crema.

He asked water, and she gave him milk; She brought him butter in a lordly dish.

26 C on una mano afferrò il piolo e con la destra il martello degli artigiani; colpì Sisera gli spaccò la testa, gli fracassò, gli trapassò le tempie.

She put her hand to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen's hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head; Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

27 A i piedi di lei si piegò, cadde e giacque esanime; ai piedi di lei si piegò cadde; dove si piegò, là cadde morto.

At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; At her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

28 L a madre di Sisera guardò dalla finestra e gridò attraverso l'inferriata: "Perché il suo carro tarda tanto ad arrivare? Perché procedono così al rilento i suoi carri?".

Through the window she looked forth, and cried, The mother of Sisera cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

29 L e piú savie delle sue dame le risposero, ed ella ripetè tra sé le sue parole:

Her wise ladies answered her, Yea, she returned answer to herself,

30 " Essi hanno trovato bottino e stanno facendo le parti. Per ogni uomo una o due fanciulle; per Sisera un bottino di vesti variopinte, un bottino di vesti variopinte e ricamate, di vesti variopinte e ricamate d'ambo i lati per le spalle di quelli che portano via il bottino".

Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, Of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?

31 C osì periscano tutti i tuoi nemici, o Eterno! Ma quelli che ti amano siano come il sole, quando si leva in tutta la sua forza!». Poi il paese ebbe riposo per quarant'anni.

So let all thine enemies perish, O Jehovah: But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
