1 I n quel giorno, Debora cantò questo cantico con Barac, figlio di Abinoam:

Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,

2 « Poiché dei capi si sono messi alla testa del popolo in Israele, poiché il popolo si è mostrato volenteroso, benedite il Signore!

For that the leaders took the lead in Israel, For that the people offered themselves willingly, Bless ye Jehovah.

3 A scoltate, o re! Porgete orecchio, o prìncipi! Al Signore, sì, io canterò, salmeggerò al Signore, al Dio d’Israele.

Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto Jehovah; I will sing praise to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

4 O Signore, quando uscisti dal Seir, quando venisti dai campi di Edom, la terra tremò, e anche i cieli si sciolsero, anche le nubi si sciolsero in acqua.

Jehovah, when thou wentest forth out of Seir, When thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, The earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, Yea, the clouds dropped water.

5 I monti furono scossi per la presenza del Signore, anche il Sinai, là, fu scosso davanti al Signore, al Dio d’Israele!

The mountains quaked at the presence of Jehovah, Even yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

6 « Ai giorni di Samgar, figlio di Anat, ai giorni di Iael, le strade erano abbandonate e i viandanti seguivano sentieri tortuosi.

In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, And the travellers walked through byways.

7 I capi mancavano in Israele; mancavano, finché non venni io, Debora, finché non venni io, come una madre in Israele.

The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, Until that I Deborah arose, That I arose a mother in Israel.

8 S i sceglievano nuovi dèi, e la guerra era alle porte. Si scorgeva forse uno scudo, una lancia, fra i quarantamila uomini d’Israele?

They chose new gods; Then was war in the gates: Was there a shield or spear seen Among forty thousand in Israel?

9 I l mio cuore va ai condottieri d’Israele! O voi che vi offriste volenterosi fra il popolo, benedite il Signore!

My heart is toward the governors of Israel, That offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye Jehovah.

10 V oi che cavalcate asine bianche, voi che sedete su ricchi tappeti e voi che camminate per le vie, cantate!

Tell of it, ye that ride on white asses, Ye that sit on rich carpets, And ye that walk by the way.

11 L ungi dalle grida degli arcieri, là tra gli abbeveratoi, si celebrino gli atti di giustizia del Signore, gli atti di giustizia dei suoi capi in Israele! Allora il popolo del Signore discese alle porte.

Far from the noise of archers, in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, Even the righteous acts of his rule in Israel. Then the people of Jehovah went down to the gates.

12 D èstati, dèstati, Debora! Dèstati, dèstati, intona un canto! Àlzati, Barac, e prendi i tuoi prigionieri, o figlio di Abinoam!

Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and lead away thy captives, thou son of Abinoam.

13 A llora scese un residuo, alla voce dei nobili scese un popolo, il Signore scese con me fra i prodi.

Then came down a remnant of the nobles and the people; Jehovah came down for me against the mighty.

14 D a Efraim vennero quelli che stanno sul monte Amalec; al tuo sèguito venne Beniamino fra le tue genti; da Machir scesero dei capi, e da Zabulon quelli che portano il bastone del comando.

Out of Ephraim came down they whose root is in Amalek; After thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal's staff.

15 I prìncipi d’Issacar furono con Debora; quale fu Barac, tale fu Issacar: egli si precipitò nella valle sulle orme di lui. Presso i ruscelli di Ruben, le decisioni furono coraggiose!

And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; As was Issachar, so was Barak; Into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. By the watercourses of Reuben There were great resolves of heart.

16 P erché sei rimasto fra gli ovili ad ascoltare il flauto dei pastori? Presso i ruscelli di Ruben, le decisioni furono coraggiose!

Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, To hear the pipings for the flocks? At the watercourses of Reuben There were great searchings of heart.

17 G alaad non ha lasciato la sua dimora oltre il Giordano; e Dan, perché si è tenuto sulle sue navi? Ascer è rimasto presso la riva del mare, e si è riposato nei suoi porti.

Gilead abode beyond the Jordan: And Dan, why did he remain in ships? Asher sat still at the haven of the sea, And abode by his creeks.

18 Z abulon è un popolo che ha rischiato la vita, così pure Neftali, sulle alture della campagna.

Zebulun was a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, And Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.

19 I re vennero, combatterono; allora combatterono i re di Canaan a Taanac, presso le acque di Meghiddo; non ne riportarono un pezzo d’argento.

The kings came and fought; Then fought the kings of Canaan. In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo: They took no gain of money.

20 D ai cieli si combatté: gli astri, nel loro corso, combatterono contro Sisera.

From heaven fought the stars, From their courses they fought against Sisera.

21 I l torrente Chison li travolse, l’antico torrente, il torrente Chison. Anima mia, avanti, con forza!

The river Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

22 A llora gli zoccoli dei cavalli martellavano il suolo, al galoppo, al galoppo dei loro guerrieri in fuga.

Then did the horsehoofs stamp By reason of the prancings, the prancings of their strong ones.

23 “ Maledite Meroz”, dice l’angelo del Signore, “maledite, maledite i suoi abitanti, perché non vennero in soccorso del Signore, in soccorso del Signore insieme con i prodi!”

Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of Jehovah. Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, Because they came not to the help of Jehovah, To the help of Jehovah against the mighty.

24 « Benedetta sia fra le donne Iael, moglie di Eber, il Cheneo! Fra le donne che stanno sotto le tende, sia benedetta!

Blessed above women shall Jael be, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Blessed shall she be above women in the tent.

25 E gli chiese dell’acqua e lei gli diede del latte; in una coppa d’onore gli offerse della crema.

He asked water, and she gave him milk; She brought him butter in a lordly dish.

26 C on una mano prese il piuolo, e con la destra il martello degli operai; colpì Sisera, gli spaccò la testa, gli fracassò e gli trapassò le tempie.

She put her hand to the tent-pin, And her right hand to the workmen's hammer; And with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head; Yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.

27 A i piedi di Iael egli si piegò, cadde, giacque disteso; ai suoi piedi si piegò e cadde; là, dove si piegò, cadde esanime.

At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; At her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

28 L a madre di Sisera guarda dalla finestra e grida attraverso l’inferriata: “Perché il suo carro tarda ad arrivare? Perché sono così lente le ruote dei suoi carri?”

Through the window she looked forth, and cried, The mother of Sisera cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

29 L e più sagge delle sue dame le rispondono, e anche lei replica a se stessa:

Her wise ladies answered her, Yea, she returned answer to herself,

30 “ Non trovano forse bottino? Non se lo stanno forse dividendo? Una fanciulla, due fanciulle per ognuno; a Sisera un bottino di vesti variopinte; un bottino di vesti variopinte e ricamate, variopinte e ricamate d’ambo i lati per le spalle del vincitore!”

Have they not found, have they not divided the spoil? A damsel, two damsels to every man; To Sisera a spoil of dyed garments, A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, Of dyed garments embroidered on both sides, on the necks of the spoil?

31 C osì periscano tutti i tuoi nemici, o Signore! Coloro che ti amano siano come il sole quando si alza in tutta la sua forza!» Così il paese ebbe pace per quarant’anni.

So let all thine enemies perish, O Jehovah: But let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
