1 T i scongiuro dunque davanti a Dio e al Signore Gesú Cristo, che ha da giudicare i vivi e i morti, nella sua apparizione e nel suo regno:

I charge thee in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

2 p redica la parola, insisti a tempo e fuor di tempo, riprendi, rimprovera, esorta con ogni pazienza e dottrina.

preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

3 V errà il tempo, infatti, in cui non sopporteranno la sana dottrina ma, per prurito di udire, si accumuleranno maestri secondo le loro proprie voglie

For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts;

4 e distoglieranno le orecchie dalla verità per rivolgersi alle favole.

and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables.

5 M a tu sii vigilante in ogni cosa, sopporta le sofferenze, fa' l'opera di evangelista e adempi interamente il tuo ministero.

But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry.

6 Q uanto a me, sto per essere offerto in libagione, e il tempo della mia dipartita è vicino.

For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure is come.

7 H o combattuto il buon combattimento, ho finito la corsa, ho serbato la fede.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:

8 P er il resto, mi è riservata la corona di giustizia che il Signore, il giusto giudice, mi assegnerà in quel giorno, e non solo a me, ma anche a tutti quelli che hanno amato la sua apparizione.

henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

9 C erca di venire presto da me,

Give diligence to come shortly unto me:

10 p erché Dema mi ha lasciato, avendo amato il mondo presente, e se n'è andato a Tessalonica; Crescente è andato in Galazia e Tito in Dalmazia.

for Demas forsook me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

11 S oltanto Luca è con me, prendi Marco e conducilo con te, perché mi è molto utile nel ministero.

Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee; for he is useful to me for ministering.

12 T ichico invece l'ho mandato a Efeso.

But Tychicus I sent to Ephesus.

13 Q uando verrai porta il mantello che ho lasciato a Troade presso Carpo e i libri, soprattutto le pergamene.

The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring when thou comest, and the books, especially the parchments.

14 A lessandro, il ramaio, mi ha fatto molto male; gli renda il Signore secondo le sue opere.

Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord will render to him according to his works:

15 G uardatene anche tu, perché si è opposto grandemente alle nostre parole.

of whom do thou also beware; for he greatly withstood our words.

16 N ella mia prima difesa nessuno è stato al mio fianco, ma mi hanno tutti abbandonato; questo non venga loro imputato.

At my first defence no one took my part, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their account.

17 I l Signore però mi è stato vicino e mi ha fortificato, affinché per mio mezzo la predicazione fosse portata a compimento e tutti i gentili l'udissero; ed io sono stato liberato dalle fauci del leone.

But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me; that through me the message might me fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

18 I l Signore mi libererà ancora da ogni opera malvagia e mi salverà fino a portarmi nel suo regno celeste. A lui sia la gloria nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

The Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will save me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Give diligence to come before winter. Eubulus saluteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.
